<itunes:summary>"We fell through a TV! Actually, uh... what is going on here?"
Shin Megami Tensei has been around for awhile, standing just outside the industry spotlight, quietly releasing unusually Japanese RPGs desperately searching for... Signs of Love. Despite garnering only a tiny cult following, its... Heartbeat Heartbeat, just kept on pounding. Atlus even found the resources to release spin offs, such as Devil Summoner and Persona, all bear-ing the Shin Megami Tensei name. When Persona 3 reached US shores, at first it seemed it would go unnoticed. But a small group of people, just wouldn't shut up about it. Persona 4 was met with a similar reaction, and the discussion became more passionate, and increasingly hard to ignore. And now what started as a spin off, has garnered more critical acclaim and attention than the series that spawned it. Many fans and critics alike would even go so far as to consider Persona 4, the greatest Japanese RPG ever made. Or, at the bear-y least, one of the best.

After ten years of working with Crash and Jak, Naughty Dog attempted to send gamers on an adventure of intrigue and derring-do that would rival those of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones, in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Leon, Tony, Jay and Josh delve into the whats, whys, hows and wheres of Nathan Drake's 2007 debut and, as ever, we also hear from the Cane And Rinse community through their forum posts and tweeted Three Word Reviews.

Once again you’re put in charge of defending the Earth from an extraterrestrial incursion, only this time you have an army at your command and the backing of the world’s leaders (at first anyway). And when the action kicks off it’s your wits and tactical nous that will be tested, rather than your reactions. Leon, Darren Forman, James and Josh gear, up, board the Cane And Rinse Skyranger and head out to kick alien buttocks with XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

 <itunes:summary>“You Defeated”
In the Age of Ancients,
The world was unformed, shrouded by fog
A land of grey crags, archtrees, and everlasting dragons
But then there was Fire
And with Fire came disparity. Heat and cold, life and death, and of course.. Light and Dark.
Then, from the Dark, They came
And found the Souls of Lords within the flame.
James Carter, the first of the dead
Darren Forman, and his daughters of chaos
Sean O'Brien, the Lord of Sunlight, and his faithful knights
And our special guest, from Ready Up, the furtive pygmy, Paul Rooney

Prepare to die as we discuss From Software's 2011 epic, Dark Souls.

Leon, Jay and Karl consider the merits of GTA IV, as well as its predecessors and successors with a lot of help from our wonderful community of contributors and Twitter Three Word Reviewers. Also: CHOONZ.

It's like pressing an emergency call button. You press it and I gotta come read you the riot act. See? Also, you gotta SAVE before you turn the power off. If you don't save, it's the same as resetting. Well, OK... That last part? I just added that. Why? Because I wanted to. Forget about other games for a minute, will ya? I'm here to suggest that you try and play THIS game, Animal Crossing, without hitting RESET. Got it? I know what you're thinking: "Whether I hit RESET or not should be up to me. After all, it's MY Nintendo GameCube!" Well, sorry. Rules are rules, OK? Know what I'm sayin'? Let's not make a big deal out of this. End of discussion. This bein' our first meeting, I'm gonna let you off easy. Think of this as a friendly warning from me to you. Oh, one more thing. This is my job. I take it seriously. So next time you see me, it's no more Mr. Nice Mole. Oh, yeah, and another thing I guess I gotta say here... I really watched my... language...here today. I'm not usually quite so... you know, so polite. If I'm bein' truthful here, I gotta tell you... I been told I got what you call an acid tongue. I sorta...scare people. Hey, that's...who I am. Nothin' I can do about it. What, I'm supposed to say sorry for bein' me? Look, it's nothin' personal. I ain't tryin' to be mean or cruel or nothin'. I ain't a monster. For those people who get their feelin's bruised easily, I gotta apologize in advance. Just deal with it, OK? The deal is, I get paid to be nasty. Crazy world, huh? Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Well, I figure it's about time for me to get outta here. So, uh... Yeah. Here's hoping I don't have to come see you no more. Now... SCRAM!"

It took four studios to make BioShock 2: 2K Marin, 2K China, Arkane and Digital Extremes working together to attempt to match (or better) what Ken Levine’s Irrational had achieved with the original BioShock. Were the fruits of so much labour as sweet and ripe as those which came before? Leon, Tony, Darren Forman and Sean O'Brien discuss whether they found this sequel to be a hit or a miss, plus as usual we chew over some of your forum posts and Three Word Reviews.

In Ubisoft’s I Am Alive you play as an unnamed man trying to reach his partner and child in an America left in ruins by a mysterious “Event”. The protagonist’s journey proves to be almost as tortuous and harrowing as the development of the game. Tony is joined by Joshua Garrity and guest Brad Gallaway of GameCritics.com to pick the bones out of the rubble.

 <itunes:summary>"Hell, it's about time"
From 1998 South Korea would never be the same again. It was that year that Blizzard decided to put aside their swords and wands for a brief moment, strapped themselves into some power armour, and brought out C-14 rifles. From the foundations laid down by WarCraft, StarCraft was born and met with much acclaim. Fans would be left waiting for over a decade for this celebrated game’s sequel. On top of that Blizzard had decided to turn the sequel into a quasi-trilogy. With the second StarCraft II installment, Heart of the Swarm, imminent, it's time for Josh, Darren Gargette and guest StarCraft II enthusiast Scott Eunson to look back at 2010’s Wings of Liberty.

 <itunes:summary>"Grand Upper!"
In the 80’s and 90’s you could hardly move through town for badly dressed punks being flying kicked by vigilantes with terrible haircuts. Fortunately these events were documented for posterity by such games as Renegade, Double Dragon, Final Fight and SEGA’s Streets of Rage series. Leon, Darren Forman, Karl and Dan Clark of The AI Bots podcast talk at some length about the Bare Knuckle trilogy, its predecessors and successors, including the sequels that never were. We also feature a truckload of your forum feedback and Three Word Reviews.

I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture! A city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.”

For this issue Leon Cox, Tony Atkins, James Carter and Karl Moon discuss Irrational Games' seminal 2007 first person shooter, Bioshock.

Formed by the three Yerli brothers, Frankfurt’s Crytek burst onto the PC gaming scene with the technically impressive FarCry in 2004. Three years later they followed up with Crysis, a near-future sci-fi FPS that remains one of the most graphically demanding games available. Is the beauty of Crysis and its 2011 multi-format sequel only skin-deep though? Leon, Tony, Josh and Karl put their heads together along with members of the Cane & Rinse community.

Released in June 2012 for 360, PS3 and PC, Yager Development’s Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person military shooter set in a troubled Middle East where you play as a highly skilled US Delta Squad operative sent to yadda yadda yadda... But is there more to it than that? Leon, Tony, Josh and David Turner of Joypod presented by Spong.com attempt to find out. There's also plenty of correspondence on the subject from the forum as well as your Twitter Three Word Reviews.

On the day that the snow turned into rain we recorded the second and final of our Shenmue podcasts. Yu Suzuki’s Shenmue II sees Ryo cross the East China Sea in his continuing pursuit of Lan Di, the man who murdered his father. Leon, Darren Forman, James and guest Dan Clark of The AIBots recall their experiences with what may well be the premature conclusion of Ryo Hazuki's saga. As well as hearing from our beloved Cane & Rinse forumites, we also take your Three Word Previews of Shenmue III from Twitter.

*As is often the case with these kinds of interviews this was recorded using a combined audio feed via Skype, which accounts for the slight loss of quality to the audio.

<itunes:summary>"You didn't like that one? A tough audience"
Following a protracted period in well-publicised ‘development hell’, Max Payne developer Remedy’s David Lynch/Stephen King/Rod Serling homage Alan Wake was eventually released on Xbox 360 in May 2010 and almost two years later on PC. Leon, Karl and a returning Jay Taylor review this "psychological thriller", plus we have significant input from other members of the Cane & Rinse team including the much-missed Tony Atkins. Furthermore as usual we hear passionate arguments for and against the title from you, our beloved listeners, in the form of forum posts and Three Word Reviews.

<itunes:summary>"Now you've really crossed the line"
The Resident Evil follow-up that metamorphosed into its own IP during development, Hideki Kamiya’s Devil May Cry arrived on the PlayStation 2 to largely rapturous acclaim in 2001. Two years after 2003’s much maligned Devil May Cry 2, director Hideaki Itsuno bounced back with 2005’s prequel, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. Such was DMC3’s success that it warranted an enhanced follow-up a year later in the shape of the Special Edition. Leon, Darren Forman, Josh and the C&R community speak about the DMC franchise past and present, as well as getting into the nitty gritty as regards to the intricacies of DMC3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition, plus there's also your Three Word Reviews of the game of course.

A developer whose hallmark is technical wizardry, Yu Suzuki’s AM2 were responsible for eye-popping innovation throughout the eighties and nineties with arcade titles such as Space Harrier, OutRun and Virtua Fighter. Open-world RPG Shenmue would become his Symphony No. 8, his Sagrada Familia, as wild ambition and development costs swelled beyond sales that were realistically possible on SEGA’s under-performing Dreamcast. Leon, Darren Forman, James and special guest Dan Clark of The AI Bots podcast are your Yokosuka tour guides.

During its relatively short existence, Clover Studio produced a triumvirate of significant and memorable titles; Viewtiful Joe, God Hand (each a candidate for a future Issue of this podcast), and in between those two, their theological folk tale of the wolf deity Amaterasu and her ‘poncle’ - a diminutive humanoid artist familiar named Issun, cleansing Nippon of demons with an array of celestial paintings and powers: Okami. Leon, James, Josh and special guest Sean Bell of Midnight Resistance and Joypod are your panel this Issue. There's plenty of forum feedback and Twitter Three Word Reviews as well.

Leon, Josh, Karl and Joystiq's Sinan Kubba successfully avoid all reference to Marcus Brigstocke's infamous Pac-Man gag as they trawl through the lengthy and patchy history of the most successful coin-op of all time, arriving at and dissecting 2010's Pac-Man Championship Edition DX.

Track 1: Entrance

Track 2: DX Title Screen

The sound designer for the original Pac-Man was Toshio Kai and obviously a lot of his iconic effects and tunes run through the series.

Credited musicians for Championship Edition are Junko Ozawa and for Championship Edition DX Akitaka Tohyama, Hiroshi Okubo, Hiroyuki Kawada, Taku Inouea. Unfortunately we are unable to ascertain which composers contributed which tracks.

Thick-necked, wise-cracking future soldiers shooting the crap out of robots with big guns. In the minds of gamers, SEGA Yakuza Studio’s Binary Domain is what all videogames are like according to non-gamers. Leon, Darren Forman and Sean earn one another's trust as they battle through Toshihiro Nagoshi's cybernetic hordes, questioning why the game was so badly undersold by its publisher and under-bought by the general public. We also find out what a few of the punters who gave the game a shot did and didn't like via their forum posts and Three Word Reviews.

The late 1990’s: Inspired by a host of classic Japanese titles, printer operating systems programmer, Daisuke Amaya, has a dorm-mate teach him how to code video games. The result - five years later - is Doukutsu Monogatari (a.k.a. Cave Story), a freeware arcade adventure in the 8-bit style featuring an idiosyncratic plot and a distinctive cast. A game that is still enjoying success eight years on. Leon, Darren Gargette and Josh recount their experiences with the game and consider what it is about Cave Story that creates such passion and loyalty within its fan-base. As usual you can also hear some music from the game and we read out your Three Word Reviews.

Some twenty years after defeating the Nihilanth on Xen, Dr. Gordon Freeman is brought out of stasis by the mysterious G-Man to defend humanity (and the Vortigaunt) against the alien forces who have enslaved the Earth in Half-Life 2. Leon, Josh and Karl combine to couple with Valve's multiple Game of the Year 2004 award winner with all the tenacity of a still-beaked Headcrab. Naturally we also enjoy contributions from the forum and Twitter including your Three Word Reviews. This Issue of Cane & Rinse is dedicated to Isabella and Lux Atkins: 2 Whole-Lives.

<itunes:summary>By 2069 the world will be controlled by giant mega-corporations called Syndicates
They will vie for the minds of a populace helpless to escape their grasp. The dystopia imagined by Starbreeze earlier this year in Syndicate bears more than a passing resemblance to that imagined by Peter Molyneux's Bullfrog in 1993. In the more modern dystopia, however, isometric view has been supplanted by a first-person perspective and tactical strategy has been switched out in favour of shooter mechanics with RPG elements and a co-op upgrade. A four-man squad of Tony, Darren, James and Karl get suited and booted to take on the Syndicates on their own turf. Leave no man, or chip upgrade, behind.

Asura’s Wrath doesn't so much defy description as demand a lengthy one: The game, produced by CyberConnect2 (best known for the .hack and Naruto series’ as well as Solatorobo on the DS and Silent Bomber on the original PlayStation), is a pseudo-episodic Hindu/Buddhist cosmology and anime inspired revenge romp comprising of arena brawler, on-rails shooter and extended QTE sections! Leon, Tony, Darren Forman and James Carter max out their synchronic rate and burst furiously into action.

<itunes:summary>"Fascinating! I never suspected such things could be."
In 1996 Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington founded Valve Corporation. Employing a team plucked from the cream of the Quake mod scene, they began work on a horror fps (inspired by Stephen King’s novel, The Mist) known as Quiver, along with a darker, more cerebral title (inspired by Cyan Worlds’ game, Myst), Prospero. Some way into development the two teams merged, taking what they had learned from their respective projects and built a single game from scratch. That game would be the epochal, echelon-defining Half-Life. Leon, Tony, Darren Gargette and Karl consider the importance of the game as well as its standing now. Alongside the main game we also talk of the various expansions and mods up to and including the recently released Black Mesa Source. As ever we also feature correspondence from the forum and your Three Word Reviews.

Here's Darren G's Quick Rinse of the original Half-Life (from the end of the train ride to the climax of the Resonance Cascade:

Darren picks up from just moments before where he left off in the original Half-Life, but now in a Black Mesa rendered in Valve's own Source engine.

This time Darren Gargette dons his combat webbing and rolls out to silence the Black Mesa employees and take down The Freeman.

Darren completes his tour of duty in the Black Mesa of the original Half-Life by stepping into the steel toe-capped boots of security guard Barney Calhoun.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>It's still alive, and cannot apologise: Mirror's Edge
We mantle into Volume Two by reflecting on the strange time of 2008, when Electronic Arts were championing new ideas, first-person shooters didn't need guns and freerunning was relatively new to videogames. How was erstwhile Battlefield developer Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment's experiment received? Should they have dropped guns altogether? Will they be allowed to flex the 'C' in their name again in a sequel? Thoughts on these questions and more as Tony, Karl, Sean, Darren Gargette and James tiptoe carefully along the Mirror's Edge.

Oh, there ain’t no rest for the wicked, money don’t grow on trees. I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed, there ain’t nothing in this world for free. In this five-man mega-panel final Issue of Volume One Leon Cox, James Carter, Darren Forman, Darren Gargette and special guest James Batchelor of industry journal MCV and Cane & Rinse friends GameBurst all teleport back down to Pandora (just off Prometheus - no, not that one) in time to try to uncover why Borderlands is so amazing/terrible before the sequel hits (which, handily, industry insider James B has already started playing at the time of recording). There's also an exceptional amount of fascinating listener interaction via the forum and Twitter as we bring Volume One to a close.

Music used in this show is as follows:

Track 1: Assaulting Krom's Canyon by Raison Varner

Track 2: Burning Rubber and Shooting Bullets by Sascha Dikiciyan & Cris Velasco

Cane & Rinse 50 was edited by Darren Gargette.

<itunes:summary>We've finally reached the end (for now?) of our Metal Gear series retrospective.
In the epic conclusion to our six part Metal Gear 25th Anniversary series Leon, Tony and Jay review 2008’s spectacular but polarising Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. A prematurely ageing Snake is sent by the UN to the war-torn Middle East in pursuit of Liquid who still plans to enslave the world. Cameos, Easter eggs, fan-service and inordinately long cut-scenes abound in what to some is Kojima's creative apex but others his self-indulgent nadir? This Issue of course features selections from the stirring MGS4 original soundtrack and as usual we also take your correspondence on the game along with your Three Word Reviews.

Music used in this show is as follows:

Track 1: Old Snake by Harry Gregson-Williams

Track 2: Desperate Chase by Harry Gregson-Williams

Track 3: The Best is Yet to Come by Rika Muranaka

Track 4: Father & Son by Harry Gregson-Williams

Cane & Rinse 49 was edited by Jay Taylor.

Melding the comic book stylings of Joe Madureira with Hebrew mythology while lifting structure and mechanics wholesale from other popular franchises, Vigil’s assured 2010 debut Darksiders caught reviewers and gamers by surprise as the sleeper hit of the year. Going on to sell North of a million copies, sequels would follow with Darksiders’ lead character War supplanted in each by one of his equestrian brothers, first Death in 2012 then Psoriasis in 2014’s next gen Darksiders 3 and finally, Thrush. <itunes:summary>Superbrothers: A tale of Sword & Sworcery, eternally retold
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is a collaboration between designer Craig Adams, developer Capybara and musician Jim Guthrie. A ‘none more indie’, multiple high-concept piece which questions certain conventions of game design while paying homage to others. Released first in 2011 for iOS devices, this oblique title intrigues and charms many, but alienates others. Leon, Tony, James and Joshua discuss the game in full and there's also a contribution from the absent Karl. Furthermore we even squeeze in a handful of your Three Word Reviews. Look behind you - a Grizzled Boor!

Leon, Tony, James and Karl slo-mo dive - sideways - into their recording seats and review Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment’s second game, 2001’s Max Payne (published by 3D Realms/Rockstar). Mashing up film noir, Norse mythology, Hong Kong action movies and the bullet time made famous by The Wachowskis' Matrix, Max Payne was one of the most flashy, desirable, and resource-hungry games of the year. In 2002 Remedy sold all franchise rights to Take Two Interactive and made a sequel for them, The Fall of Max Payne (released in 2003) which we also cover here. On top of this your Max Payne-related forum posts and Three Word Reviews. Better still, the film adaptation goes completely unmentioned.

Disappointing sales greeted Max Payne 3, Rockstar's own take on Remedy's action franchise, meaning that this may be the last in the series for quite some time at least. But is it any good? Darren Gargette finds out in this PC version Quick Rinse:</itunes:summary>

Leon, Tony, Darren Gargette and Josh review Nintendo Software Planning and Development's (so far) trilogy of Rhythm Tengoku/Heaven/Paradise games for Game Boy Advance, DS and Wii. The rhythm action genre was born, to all intents and purposes, in 1996 with NaNaOn Sha’s delightful Parappa the Rapper. The so-called BeMani craze evolved with increasingly elaborate mechanics and peripherals, however in 2006 Nintendo took the genre 'back to basics' with a minimalist, pocket friendly take on perfectly timed button pressing in Rhythm Tengoku. The panel also take a look back at the rhythm action genre as a whole and where this series fits in. Plus of course we share your forum posts and Three Word Reviews.

<itunes:summary>This week we focus on Kojima Productions' MGS: Peace Walker
In the penultimate of our six Metal Gear 25th anniversary specials, Leon, Tony, James and Paul Rooney of Ready-Up arrive at the Central America of the 1970’s for Kojima Productions 2010’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Was attempting to follow up 2008’s epic ‘conclusion’ of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with a handheld title a fool’s errand? And does the game work on home consoles as part of the HD Collection? Strap yourselves in, for this is another long one, as we explore in some detail the plot, gameplay and politics - sexual and otherwise - of the game.

<itunes:summary>Cute and fluffy: that's the team talking Kirby's Epic Yarn.
Leon, Tony, Darren Gargette and James get cute with Kirby's Epic Yarn. HAL Laboratories’ pink blob without attitude (unless you regard some of the US box art as canon) Kirby has starred in some twenty Nintendo games over the past two decades. 2010’s Epic Yarn (2011 in Europe, much to our chagrin) was developed by Good-Feel for HAL/Nintendo - a team previously best known for their educational titles on DS along with 2008’s moderately well-received Wario Land: Shake It (a.k.a Shake Dimension) on Wii. As always we also take your emails, your three word reviews and finish with a song (from the game).

Leon, Tony, James and Josh discuss Capcom's unusual afterlife puzzle adventure - Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - from Shu Takumi, the designer who brought you the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney/Turnabout Trial series of interactive courtroom dramas on GameBoy Advance and DS, and Kyoto's Jupiter Corporation, the team behind Square Enix RPG, The World Ends With You (as well as a number of quality Picross games for Nintendo). Available for Nintendo DS and iOS platforms, Ghost Trick boasts some of the most opulent hand-drawn 2D animation around. As well as sharing our own views on the game, we also feature listener feedback, three word reviews and of course some of the music from the game. Please be warned: spoilers abound in this twisty tale of death, time travel, kismet, Sissel and Missle.

Leon, Darren Forman, Josh and Sinan Kubba of BigRedPotion discuss the tenth game by Goichi Suda’s Grasshopper Manufacture - No More Heroes. The Wii original game released in 2007/2008 to some critical acclaim but pitiful sales. Since then this game has become something of a cult classic rewarded with an HD update in the shape of Heroes’ Paradise and a sequel - Desperate Struggle - also covered in this podcast.
