Re: Ghost of Tsushima
This does feel more soothing to just explore the world in than, say, Odyssey or Horizon. Just wandering about finding the shrines, Fox dens, hot springs etc... It’s not *quite* as chill as exploring Breath of the Wild, but it has a lot of that same melancholic vibe to it. I also really like the way ...

The full version of the Bugsnax song is out there now. It might be too dangerous an ear worm to link here though. It’s weapons grade catchy.

Re: Video game tie-in media
The Witcher is a slightly unusual case in that the game came a long time after (most) of the novels, you could make the argument that it’s the game that is the tie-in. But at the same time, you don’t *need* to know the novels to follow the game. I’d forgotten about ff15 and it’s anime movie prequel,...

Video game tie-in media
A conversation about the Halo games over in the ‘games completed’ thread led to us discussing that Halo has a problem for players understanding its wider plot due to too much of it being detailed in the tie-in media. Halo 4 and 5, and to a lesser extent Halo Reach are the ones to probably suffer the...

Re: Games Completed 2020
I was going to talk a little more about the Halo tie-in media versus how other game series have done it, but I think that’s probably its own thread. So I shall go make one.

Re: Games Completed 2020
Reach is an interesting one in that it sits firmly in the period where they were assuming that people were not just playing the games but also reading all the novels and watching all the web series. Most of it’s stronger story beats rely on you knowing a little more about the overall plot and charac...

Re: Ninjala (Nintendo Switch)
In comparison to fighting games the difference is that extra axis of movement. You have far more freedom of positioning. Even in a 3d fighting game like Tekken or Soul Calibur, the characters are always facing each other and moving off the line between the two players is minimal, more a case of avoi...

Re: Ninjala (Nintendo Switch)
Played it a bit, really nice aesthetic but just like Bleeding Edge I don’t think third person melee combat really works for rapid multiplayer action. It’s just too imprecise compared to shooters. It felt random. It clearly isn’t, because there were players doing consistently well compared to me, but...

The higher insurance is because at some point someone will vomit in your car and you won’t be able to work until you’ve deep cleaned it.

Nothing wrong with using quick connects and a crimping tool instead of soldering. Works just as well (probably better) and you’re less likely to completely destroy things. Heh.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I played a bit of Neon Abyss, but I really struggle with using the shoulder buttons or triggers to jump. I can map them to my joypads underside paddles (like I do when I play Overwatch or Apex) and that helps, but I don’t ever feel as in control as I do when I’m playing dead cells. I’m perhaps just ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I had a similar experience with Shadow Warrior 2, in that I was at first pretty disappointed with the change in design philosophy, but once I’d got into it I had a blast still.
I think the first game is better still, but 2 is definitely worth playing.

Re: What's Out This Week?
I'm going a little higher, I predict an OpenCritic average review score of 84-88%. This is based purely on buzz. Seems to be about where it’s sitting at the moment. Both Eurogamer and Kotaku have gone with ‘it’s pretty but it’s just another open world game”. Which is, you know, exactly what I wante...

Re: Shmups
Killing joysticks while attempting to mod them is a bit of a rite of passage I think. I have a box full of bits from dead ones. (Though in my case it’s from persevering with a soldering iron that didn’t get hot enough, so I killed the electronics by holding the heat to the board too long).

Need to clear the decks for Ghost I think, should be able to finish The Messenger by then I think.
I’m hoping ghost will fill that lazy evening winding down after work that AC Odyssey did for me for so long.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
For me it’s a far better game than the first one. The original is all grimdark and ‘I must get revenge for my dead family!’ and so on, takes itself incredibly seriously. You’re basically hacker Batman in it, and it’s so po-faced. The sequel has you as part of an anarchist hacker collective with the ...
