Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I think it's mainly because the puzzle design in Zelda is usually so tight and prescriptive, and the ones in this one felt so different. I remember having a particular problem with the puzzles with the rolling boulders, or the ones where you had to freeze something, then apply force to it. Maybe it'...

Re: 386: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

I have a real love/hate relationship with this game. Assassin’s Creed is a series I have no interest in and this was the first (and only) one I have played. The reason for my interest in this one in particular is my general fondness for pirate-themed stuff, and I had long wished for an open world pi...

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I know it maybe sounds a bit ungrateful, but I can't help but wonder what a proper sequel would look like. It's an astonishing game in a lot of respects, but there's certainly room for a lot of improvement and tightening up of certain things. I'm in two minds about the weapon deterioration - initial...

Re: Google Stadia

Thing is, the traditional set top console and packaged game model has been surprisingly resilient. If you'd asked me 10 years ago, I would have guessed that games would be almost completely digital by now, but that hasn't been the case. People love thier consoles, and all that comes with them - the ...

I couldn't get on with Dead Cells. I think I just have to accept that I don't like procedurally generated games in general.

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

Brothers In Arms series? I think the series eventually ended up going off the rails, but I really liked the original Road to Hill 30 on Xbox. I much preferred its relatively sedate and restrained take on the WWII shooter genre over the likes of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, which always seemed s...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Trials Rising . The core gameplay is fun as ever - its Trials! - but I don’t think I’ve ever played a game that is so hamstrung by utterly baffling design decisions. To start with, the UI is a confusing, cluttered mess - totally overloaded with unnecessary fluff that just gets in the way of the gam...

Re: February 2019

I very much think you should keep the show as is regarding spoilers, for a few reasons: 1. You're never going to please everyone as the definition as to what even constitutes a spoiler varies greatly from person to person. Some people might consider discussions of skill upgrades or unlocks or explan...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Speaking of games being overdesigned to their detriment... hoo boy, Trials Rising. I don't think I've ever played a game where the core gameplay is so good but the developer insists on putting so many barriers and annoying distractions in front of it. There are so many unnecessary bells and whistles...

I completely agree - Saturn Bomberman is one of my all-time favourites- but they’ve been using polygons for Bomberman since the late 90s!
Perfect example as any of the 'fixing something that wasn't broken' school of design.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

We play the SNES Super Bomberman in the office on the (hacked) SNES classic and it's still a total blast though we're obviously limited to 2 player matches (in fact its way more fun than Super Bomberman R which is visually rather muddy and has a weirdly confusing UI). A friend had the Saturn version...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Super Bomberman R is one of those games that is overdesigned to its detriment.

The 3d visuals just get in the way of the game - it looks and feels so much less precise than the 2d BM games.

A port of any of the SNES or Saturn BM games would be far more preferable.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

To be fair, I've now played the beta of Trials Rising and imo it's really not as bad as the article made out. It isn't buttery smooth, but tbh I've never been too bothered about frame rates - it's probably not something I'd even notice unless someone else pointed it out. To me the cluttered UI, rubb...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

This is really disappointing. Apparently the Switch port of Trials Rising really stinks - input lag, sub 30 fps and (yikes) N64 style fog to hide the draw distance... Was really looking forward to this game. Hope there'll be able to fix with a patch? http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/02/trials_r...

Re: Hollow Knight

I think the game as a whole is very much a love it or hate it kind of thing, and I'd extend that to the visuals too (can't really say the music made much of an impression on me, though to be fair I often play switch games on mute). I don't think it's an objectively ugly looking game - it's very acco...

Re: 395: Donkey Kong 64

My distinct memory of playing DK64 on release was confusion as to why I wasn’t really enjoying playing it, as I was a huge fan of the 3d platformer genre. Looking back all these years later, if I had to sum up the game in one word, it would be ‘unwieldy’. There were too many challenges, too many wor...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I always get really hyped for these things, then ultimately find them a bit underwhelming - the content of them always seems to comprise about 80% obscure JRPGs and DLC for game's I don't play. Sorely disappointed that there was no mention of Metroid Prime Trilogy or the long-rumoured Star Fox Grand...
