Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (22.2.19) - 356: NieR:Automata

So much has been written about Nier: Automata that I feel reluctant to add anything here. I mean, how much of what I say will actually be me? Won’t I simply be emulating other people’s feelings and opinions using slightly different words – trying way too hard 2B unique? Define myself? Also, how to ...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

I know you didn't mean mechanics because not once in my attempts to engage with you about mechanics have you mentioned one single mechanic in any game in either a complimentary or critical way. Or, to be generous, you don't know what is meant by 'mechanics'. I'm not upset in the slightest that you ...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

Now, come on. I really don't know why you didn't you just say 'I didn't mean mechanics, I don't care about mechanics' in the first instance, instead of obfuscating the discussion for hours with some call to 'subjectivity'. In future, perhaps you would consider simply holding your hands up, acknowle...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

Of course that's fine with me, glad the spoilered back and forth was of some value in sparking a few thoughts - even if we didn't get too close to common ground! And one more thing, I absolutely love this 'Impractical Combo' guy, he really captures the insane goofiness and creativity and the frankly...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

I appreciate that 'people like different things' but it kind of neuters the idea of a discussion forum. It's most interesting to me why someone has a preference, not simply the fact that they have a preference or what that preference is. My first question was 'what don't you like about the mechanic...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

Honestly, with all due respect, I asked you to give examples so I could understand your perspective, out of genuine interest. As it is, I now understand that you may have simply meant something different by the words you used. There's a lot of talk about 'mechanics' these days and it happens to be ...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

Spoilered to not clog up the issue thread. Apologies if I was a little abrupt, middle of the night post, been up with a stomach bug. I'm genuinely interested in what you found convoluted or obtuse, though. It's probably seen as the poster child for both an extremely accessible and extremely deep fig...

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

But...It's mechanically one of the deepest and most complex fighting games ever made, much moreso than 3S or Alpha 3, and its success dwarfed every other fighting game of its era.

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

(And I do apologise for the length of this one, but I thought I might be bold as it's lighter on feedback than most threads. It's also a story that needs a bit of mechanical context, I think!)

Re: Our next podcast recording (1.2.19) - 355: Street Fighter IV series

More than ten years on, the Focus Attack Dash Cancel mechanic feels as exciting as it did when I first played Street Fighter 4 in a packed arcade in China. Although simple enough to execute, it offers amazing versatility in both attack and defence. The first time I realised I could cancel a fireball...

Re: Nex Machina

Really interesting discussion on this one, I enjoyed it despite not getting so much out of the game. Just wanted to share a few thoughts on some of the points raised which have made me want to go back to the game - yet again! I thought Karl in particular summed up his thoughts beautifully and it def...

Re: The "Introduce yourself" thread

Thanks, fellas. I'm going to make the effort to contribute more to the podcast discussions but trying (and somewhat succeeding) in swerving forums and social media for the most part. Anyway, all the best to everyone in the brilliant community here and I'll defo see you around and about. X

Re: Our next podcast recording (5.1.19) - Issue 351: Nex Machina

As with Resogun, I feel like I fundamentally don't get Nex Machina. Despite being a big fan of twin stick shooters, including Housemarque's own Super Stardust Ultra, I find little to enjoy here. Visually, I find it aggressively busy to a fault. To me, twin stick shooters are about identifying space,...

Re: The "Introduce yourself" thread

Gents, without giving it a big dramatic flounce, just to say I'm taking a bit of a break from the Internet for a while. It's very certainly not you, it's me. I'm not depressed or attention seeking, just recognised I've been neglecting stuff due to time spent online. Classic new year's resolution stu...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I bought it day one for Switch but - without wanting to jeopardise the friendship! - I've concluded that I am sick of Metroidvania. Nice presentation and controls, though. I've been playing lots and lots of Smash and I've found myself hooked on the fast fists and power punching of the KO king, Littl...

That's right, Alex. Not sure whether you actually get the adapter with this new release of the pad but it's authentic, yep.

Really enjoying it here, too. Only about a third of the way through but it's another cracker. Some awesome J-pop stuff in there that I really want to know where it's from, as long as it's not Gal Gun 2. I'll be back with a full list of answers, or rather as full as I can manage.
