Steam Box

Polygon have got the lowdown on what the much rumoured "Steam Box" (codenamed Piston) with it being revealed as a modular computer by hardware maker Xi3 and Valve at CES and is modeled after the PC maker's X7A line of pint-sized computers. Xi3 brought an early version of Piston to CES, but...

Re: Whatcha Been Watching?

I thought the film didn't really feel as long as it was since it's fairly well paced overall. I was amused to see Benedict Cumberbatch in the end credits with his name appearing amidst the principal cast despite his scene being nothing more than a blurry glimpse of his character. I figured, with reg...

That whole sequence was hilarious - but the bit with the liquid soap killed me!

Re: No more used game market

The sheer proliferation of digital media over the coming years is gonna guarantee the development of sites that specialise in the re-selling of digital content be it music, books, films or games. Whether the consoles embrace this concept could very well decide whether they are still relevant in a de...

Re: nVidia Project Shield

And bringing a comparison to film into the discussion is entirely pointless. It's well-established that games are not films, television, books, comics or anything else besides videogames and making any sort of comparison between videogames and other mediums is utterly dismissive of how unique video...

Would it be at all possible to enable tapatalk support, supposedly (having never done this myself) phpBB can natively do it with only a minor tweak but I have no clue what it is. (tapatalk is an iOS forum app that can make using forums a lot nice on those gadgets) Apologies for taking a while to re...

Re: No more used game market

It's an interesting premise, but I'm always reminded by what Leia said to Vader "The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems that'll slip through your fingers" only in this case replace star systems with consumers. With the digital marketplace on the verge of a what could be a ma...

I love how I worked everything out in the water dome so I could place the C&R mascot smack in the middle, and then they go and change it. *shakes fist* Well, now you can prove your skills by making the new one! ;) I love looking at these pictures at what people get up to in this game - stunning...

Re: What would you omit from a game?

I read this week that multiplayer has been confirmed in the new Tomb Raider game. So I'm gonna say I would omit multiplayer being added to a game franchise that has sold millions of units without this somewhat incessant need to add a multiplayer component to every bloody game. There were many reason...

Re: Lost Odyssey

...I was quite liking it but I spent an hour trying to beat Bogimoray and it really killed the game for me. This has been mentioned by many people who have played the game and proved to be a bit of a bugger for me too (YouTube came to the rescue as it often does with things these days). The trick i...

Re: Lost Odyssey

I have to say that I'm skipping the dreams as I play this. I read through the first few you unlock but I found having to read through half a dozen pages of text telling a short story every time I unlock one quite jarring so soon decided to skip them altogether. It's a strange one as it's entirely fo...

Re: Lost Odyssey

It's pacing was dreadful, and it was just such a chore. It is relieving to me, rather than remiss of me to know I will never finish that game. The first 30 minutes so promising yet never recreated. Lastly, the funeral scene was a bind, I will never understand how it endears to people. I understand ...

Lost Odyssey

Finally, after picking this up late in 2008 for £15, I finally sat down and begun playing Mistwalker's ambitious Lost Odyssey . I've tried several times over the past four years to get into it but would only get around three or four hours in, put it down and not go back to it. Then recently our own ...

Re: The art of storytelling and characterisation in games

They may be genuine writing talent, but that by no means qualifies them as good game writers. That's often why stories in games are so poor. I never said it qualified them but having an experienced writer who understands the importance of structure and characterisation helps translate this to a gam...

Re: The art of storytelling and characterisation in games

Thinking back, whilst video games have been part of my life since '79, they only really became to the fore when they gave me stories. I would often play games such as Space Invaders, Pac Man, Sonic and Streets of Rage but would quickly grow weary of the experiences and go find something else to do a...

Re: The art of storytelling and characterisation in games

You see, I'd put Binary Domain in the, "story wasn't even a focus" camp. I'd agree, but I also found the repetitive combat to be dull as dishwater too. I'd say that similar to you saying that you need your game to have a "personality", a game most definitely needs to have a hook...

Re: The art of storytelling and characterisation in games

I'm definitely someone who prefers to play games with a strong narrative focus and find playing any game without one a chore, at least as far as single-player experiences go. Games are in an interesting place when it comes to offering narratives to those who play them. Unlike pretty much any other m...
