Played the remaster on PS4. I have given my full thoughts in the Grim Fandango thread for the C & R episode later this year. To summarise, loved the world, dialogue, music and art direction. Hated most of the puzzles and found them to be illogical and time wasting. If this is typical of point and click games then the genre might not be for me Yeah quite mixed on this one to be honest.

Re: Games completed 2017
Gears as a whole really works for me when I see the characters (some of whom are actually quite well constructed) as the larger than life meathead parody puppets they are clearly presented as.
Once they start to bring in dead wives and 'emotional' plot lines I find myself detached from the whole thing (though in isolation, I find the Maria scene in Gears 2 quite affecting - it's just that it's in the wrong game).
Also, the world building and larger story telling is a bit of a mess.

Completely agree. I've had an enormous amount of fun playing Gears over the years, but the idea that people take the characters and fiction 'seriously' astonishes me (see also the Fast and Furious films and Pro Wresting).

Re: Games completed 2017
I agree with both of you - The characters are indeed fun and charismatic (Baird and his garbage attitude will always be my favorite). But diving deep into the "lore" and taking the narrative beats seriously seems so odd to me. In retrospect, I must add. They did affect me when I first played them...
I just don't really understand why anyone would care enough to take that fiction home with them, so to speak.

If a game tells a story, I will internalise it and think about it, no matter how dumb.
Because that’s just what I do.

Re: Games completed 2017

Nearly a year later, and I finally got around to finishing this. I really liked the central narrative and the fact that the protagonist (ie the character with the progressive story arc) isn't the player, but the character they accompany - in this case, Lillie. It has that hallmark wholesomeness that has always endeared the series to me, and I love that the series has evolved to the point that your 'rival', rather than a snarky enemy, is actually your best friend who gets a kick out of competing with you. The captains and kahunas (equivalent to Gym leaders, sort of) are well designed and entertaining, and Team Skull is endearingly goofy compared to the exceptionally bland Team Flare of X and Y.
Gameplay-wise, I didn't notice such a significant step-change. Sure, there's no gyms, but they're just replaced with something very similar. The game didn't seem any more difficult to me - I was able to play exactly how I always end up playing. That is, race all the way through to the Champion battle with the same six Pokémon and a lot of potions, spectacularly fail at the final hurdle, give up for months, go back and grind a bit to break through to the credits. Much as I love the series, I really don't like trudging around grinding XP, and I get much more satisfaction from winning a tough battle strategically than over-levelling.
Anyway - Sun/Moon are very much worth playing and probably the best jumping-in point if you're new to the series, though I still think Alpha Ruby/Omega Sapphire is more fun.
There's a couple of great music tracks in Moon too - hoping to see some better-orchestrated covers before I submit anything to Sound of Play though. The originals are a little grating.

There's a good game and an interesting story in there somewhere but it takes far too long to get there. Would be an interesting C&R show. I wouldn't recommend it, I was thoroughly confused at the end as I must've missed some of the story.

Re: Games completed 2017
The slow pacing and backtracking isn’t for everyone. I liked it mostly for the reasons you dislike it, heh. I like things to not always be completely spelled out by the end (this is probably why I had no trouble with the endings of Halo 2 or Mass Effect 3.)
Oxenfree also has a new game + that mixes thing up and is worth a play if you enjoyed the game, probably not if you didn’t though.
