Games completed 2017
Re: Games completed 2017
Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth
Such a terrible name for a game. Enjoyable enough point and click adventure game. Very wordy but interesting for it. I was a bit confused by the politics at times (who is who?) and some of the story beats rang a little untrue, but overall it was enjoyable and the setting was pretty great (the year is 1135) as it was recognisable but pretty alien (in the world views presented) at the same time.

20/09 - The Room Two (Android)
Replays of both of these, before the recording of Issue 288. Still every bit as impressive; lots to discuss. Onwards to Three!

A solid game of arcade-style golf. Unfortunately it could be quite off-putting at the start, before you level up the control ratings of the clubs, as the ball can end up over a wide area even when you hit it well. I'm also concerned about the custom clubs they put in at the end, online could be a bit 'pay to win' when tournaments start. That will be a massive disappointment for me.
Also there may be a true ending on Rank 7.
Sep 18 - Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (3DS)
Are all Layton games that odd?
Anyway, while Layton puzzles are more fun than the investigation parts of Ace Attorney games, you don't get to know the characters and there is less set up meaning the cases are not as good.

First time playing this, and I just polished off 100% completion. A weird series, but I'm eagerly anticipating Old Sins, when it arrives. More on the podcast.

I’ve been at this on and off for a couple of months now. It’s very good, but also the levels are perhaps a little too long so it gets quite tiring at times. It has a tendency to repeat its tricks a little too much, so the clever things stop being clever and start being chores. But on the whole, I enjoyed it,
And even though I’m normally someone who thinks that dark and edgy takes on the Alice stories are a bit passé, this one does work. Mostly down to some excellent voice acting work, and the fact it goes to a very dark place indeed. Darker than anything else I’ve ever seen in a video game.

Taken me a while to finish up something since Hellblade. Didn't expect things to take so long. I guess Splatoon is still taking up a large part of my gaming time lately. Yakuza Kiwami has also been a pretty big time sink too, so this one took longer than I was expecting.
My thoughts on it are mostly unchanged from before. I like the presentation and characters. While the story itself isn't anything particularly special, the way they present real human characters in this over-the-top setting is pretty great. Cutscenes as well are presented very stylishly too.
Was not a fan of the gameplay in the end though. While guns feel big and powerful, they are also very unwieldy and clunky. It always felt very clumsy using them, and often times I felt like fights came down to whether I had enough health rather than how well I could shoot, which was usually poorly. Character movement was also a pain, always get stuck on the environment and such, which lead to a few unfair feeling deaths as well. Stealth was pretty bare bones and not that interesting too. The aesthetic of the game was also a factor in making the combat a slog, with how drab and grey everything is, it's often very hard to pick out where the hell enemies are.
So in the end I have to say this game ended up being more frustrating than anything else. The good parts were in the minority, and were dragged down by the bad parts too. I ended up dropping the game down to the lowest difficulty and just blasting my way through the latter levels in the end. Such a shame, considering the developer connection to The Darkness. I love that game, and you can see the same kind of DNA here too. That game managed to get away with its janky combat though, probably because of far more forgiving mechanics, while here I can't say the same is true.

Normally don't include repeat playthroughs on here, but this expansion changes the base game so much it "feels" like a new game. It's an absolute must if you liked/loved XCOM 2. I think the recurring Chosen enemies are handled brilliantly and the hero units are a lot of fun. This further cements XCOM 2 as my favourite example of the genre, rubbing shoulders with Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Destiny 2.
Well ok just the story, but hey closet I've been to 'compleating' a game in years!
Not many of us playing on XBOX so Linda and I are doing all we can to level up the clan!

Re: Games completed 2017
Totally agree about the levels - absolutely stunning, but 50% too long. I never finished it despite really wanting to. I was just exhausted half way through every level. Definitely a case of not being able to see the wood for the trees, could have benefited from addition via subtraction, insert third cliche here.Flabyo wrote: ↑September 21st, 2017, 9:55 pm

I also dropped the difficulty down for the last level I think. I enjoyed the crazy story beats more than the shooting in the end. I'm still amazed by the asylum bit. The game seems to have garnered a lot of praise in the post-review, "You know what, Wolfenstein is actually a great game" phase, and I'm not sure it deserves all that praise.Scrustle wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2017, 6:17 pm

A beautifully crafted piece of art with relaxing puzzles all over it. Until that last secret challenge, which is just rage-inducing RNG trolling by the developer and feels utterly out of place.
23 Sep: Day of the Tentacle (PlayStation 4 - Platinum)
Maybe for the best that The Witness let me down at the finish, as I quite like that my first ever PlayStation Platinum is for completing a remaster of a game I first completed as a 6 year old - the second game I ever completed. DotT's wacky antics shouldn't bring a tear to the eye but when I saw that opening scrolling shot of the mansion, some deep-seated nostalgia was triggered and I may have had a sniffle. It's probably because unlike Monkey Island, I haven't touched this game since I first got obsessed with it almost a quarter of a century ago.

Utter bobbins! Cheap-as-chips production values, and iffy art... but the game plays beautifully.
Of course, I'm terrible at it.

Of the PSP games I picked up last week, Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast has definitely seen the most play - it's brilliant! Within that game is the original arcade version of Outrun 2 SP, which is what I've played here. It's a really great conversion, smooth, pretty and FAST! Not much more to say really, but I'd love to see an Outrun collection on current gen with all the games in the series. When I played Yakuza earlier in the year I spent many hours just in the arcades playing the first Outrun game, but I've traded that away now so it would be great to have a package. Timeless classics, bring 'em back!

Jan - Titanfall 2 (XO)
Feb - Mass Effect 3 (X360 via XO)
Jun - TLOZ: Breath Of The Wild (Switch)
Jul - Football Manager 2017 (iOS)
Aug - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
Aug - Gears of War 4 (XO)
Sep - Severed (Vita)
Sep - Forza Horizon 3 (XO)
What a fantastic video game FH3 is. In one play session it can evoke memories of titles as diverse as PGR, Sega Rally and Burnout. It boasts easily one of the most beautiful open worlds ever created in a game. And it's so jam packed with content and different ways to play, that you could comfortably buy this as your one racer for the year and be a very happy gamer indeed.
I could go on and on about this one as there's so much to say, but there's no need really. If you have even a passing interest in racing games, do yourself a favour and pick this up!

2nd October - Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (Switch)
Completed the main story on my commute today and have done all the challenges on World's 1 & 2, with a few down in 3 and 4.
All in all, a welcome little surprise. Great production values, good challenge, inventive concept and battle scenarios... Felt like my interest waned a bit in World 3 due to some unfair difficulty spikes but I loved World 4 again. Not sure if I've got the energy or need to do the DLC or ultra hard challenges though. A month with the game felt right so I may trade it in to make FIFA18 a bit cheaper...
One final word on the score. Truly brilliant. One of my favourite gaming soundtracks of all time.
Well done Ubisoft and Nintendo for the most unlikely pairing up since Jerry Hall married Rupert Murdoch.
