19/08: Grim Fandango
27/08: Sonic Mania
Been on holiday past two weeks to catch up with old friends and managed to do a fair bit of gaming. Done so much I managed to finish some even!

13/10: Undertale
After all the praise this game has gotten, it has always been something that I have wanted to try sometime and I have to say that I fully agree with the consensus. The fact that you can finish the game without killing a single monster shows that pacifism can be compelling if presented in the right way. The characters are so likeable that you genuinely don"t want to do any harm to them. I did a full Pacifist run and I had a fantastic time with it. Flowey is one of the most memorable villains I have come across in a long time and the way he messes with the fourth wall has been unprecedented for me. Unlike most RPGs, the pace is consistent throughout (especially when doing a pacifist run as you do need to fight to grind) and is always filled with memorable moments. I loved everything about this and am so glad I finally got to experience it. Up there with one of my GOTY so far.

17/10: Kirby: Return to Dreamland

Myself and two other friends blazed through this in 2 days. Multiplayer really does make this game more enjoyable and is far more forgiving than the constant screwing over that would entail in NSMBW. Bonus modes such as Arena is especially fun to undergo with more than one player. The mega abilities were fun to play through but I think were vastly inferior to the robot suit in Planet Robobot as these abilities are a lot more predetermined and rigid in their applicability whereas the robot suit allowed you to experiment much more. Final boss was pretty intense and was definitely up to there as one of the better final bosses of the series. Overall, a very solid Kirby adventure and a great return to his roots after years of more experimental titles.

Mad Max. And for once I mean 100% completed. A full Rinsing was done. ;)

Great game, a few rough edges but well worth sticking with.

One of this months games with gold, a fun and fairly short sci fi puzzler from the people who did pneuma.

Lot of stuff about AI and the nature of consciousness. Some decent environmental, story telling. And a lot of lateral thinking puzzling. I never found it particularly hard, but my brain is wired for this kind of thinking (especially the puzzles in there that are straight up computer science logic problems).

It’s going for a similar vibe to Portal, only without the comedy. It works, but the puzzling sections are kept separate from the story sections and I think that harms the flow a bit. (And for gamer score types, it’s a pretty easy full completion)

Well this is as close to a completion as is possible, you never really finish NMS. I'm glad I waited to play this after numerous patches with much more content added. I enjoyed the pure exploration and will come back to it should there be further patches adding content in the future. More thoughts if there is ever a C&R on this one.

February - The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (PC)
March - Stanley Parable (PC)
April - The Wolf Among Us (PC)
April - Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter (PC)
June - Metro 2033 Redux (PC)
June - Firewatch (PC)
August - Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide (PC)
October - Grim Fandango Remastered (PC)

October - Witcher 3 Wild Hunt + DLC (PC) - Wow . . . clocked up 183 hours on Steam with this baby. Feeling a bit lost now. Wandering around the flat looking for contracts and my wife is giving me funny looks. Expressed my love for the core game fairly effusively on the Witcher 3 podcast forum and will pen my thoughts on the DLC shortly, but overall - just an incredible experience. Definitely RPGed out for a few months. Let's have a look at the Steam pile of shame. Fallout 1 & 2, KOTOR 2, Jade Empire, Metro: Last Light Redux. Erm . . . Metro it is then I guess. I suppose it's kinda Halloweeny.

Pokemon crystal(emulator)- Yeah so it's a bit of an interesting story this one, as a child the only pokemon game I played was pokemon yellow but even then I didnt finnish the game because as I stated before I really disliked JRPGs and their grinding, even something as simple as pokemon, I did get pretty far though I remember being unable to beat the Elite four because all my party was around level 40 and they were all 50 and above and I didnt wanna grind, I did love the pokemon anime and card games in my childhood but yellow was the only actual game I played for a long time.

Fast Foward a bunch of years and I had played and loved Persona 3 which made me wanna go back to other JRPGs and pokemon was on the list so I played through yellow all the way through and the remakes of gen 1 FireRed and Leaf green, and they sort of became comfort games that I often come back to but I never played any of the other games post gen 1, I did try the remakes for silver and gold a little but there was a bunch of problems with the emulation and I couldnt get very far, serves me right I supposed, but I did get the pokemon ich this past week and decided to blast through the original crystal for the first time(literally because fast- foward is a blessing in these emulators and makes grinding a non-issue)and I was really impressed.

I mean alot of the improvements and features I thought only came with gen 3 were actually in the sequel straight away, also it's really interesting how much more fleshed out the pokemon world you could say is in this game and there's even a semblance of a story and a narrative theme going on in the game, gameplaywise is a bit more handholdy at the beginning but the game gives you a freedom of exploration that you really didnt get in the previous game, I mean once you get to goldenrod city the game gets very open and you can go whenever unlike in the first game where you pretty much have to tackle the gyms in a select order, if a I have one criticism is that hms are worse here then they were before, they were annoying before but in crystal you have 3 water hms meaning that your water pokemon only has 1 free move for you to choose or you have to have 2 water types to teach these moves and that can be really annoying especially since there are tms now that are important as well like headbutt and rock smash. Another issue I have is that while it's pretty cool that you get to revisit the area from the first game and battle all the gyms there isnt really much to do in Kanto, I mean there's very few trainers, very little story to speak of and all pokemon you can get there are at such a low level they arent even worth grinding, the ultimate pay-off is pretty cool though it's not often that you get to face the previous protagonist in a sequel.

So yeah Im pretty impressed and I enjoyed the game alot more then I thought I would it's not on my top 10 rpgs or anything but I certainlly get why so many people revere this gen as the best one, I can also see why Kojima took direct inspiration from this game when he made Peace Walker and Phantom Pain which always puzzled me, for me I think gen 1 will always be the best, if anything because you have squirtle as your starter which leads to the best pokemon of them all which is Blastoise ;) so there is really no contest, but if I were to look at both objectivelly crystal is a better game, it's everything a sequel should be and more and Im glad I finnally got to play it.

Just decided to pick this up in the recent Steam sale for the sake of having all these games on PC. Nice fun little game to get through in a few days too. Also makes a change from getting frustrated at the other stuff I've been stuck on lately. As I've mentioned before, it's the weakest of the LoS games, but still pretty good.

I've thought about playing through this one again for a while, but I was intending on playing through LoS1 again first. I did actually start that a while ago, and got about halfway through before drifting off to other stuff. But that means I've now played that game the least number of times. Three for MoF and LoS2, and two and a half for LoS1. Guess I'll fix that at some point too.

Dragon Quest Builders - PS4

Finished the main campaign, but not all the additional, optional challenges.

This game engaged me in a way that Minecraft failed to do. Don't get me wrong: Minecraft is a game I respect in an academic sense, and what it managed to achieve from such humble beginnings is astounding, but it never really grabbed me beyond that. No emotional tug, nothing to bring me back to it. But I am in the minority.

Maybe its the addition of a decent story (not mind-blowing, but engaging enough), and having NPC's with whom you interact with, and who build things on your behalf helps. In terms of characters, there were quite a few in Chapter 3 that I liked a lot! And the look of the game is much, much prettier than anything in Minecraft.

There is the sandbox mode, that I dabbled in a bit after I finished the main campaign, and I can easily see myself going back, as even as I'm typing this I'm visualising the layout of the town, where I'm going to place certain buildings...

Overall, it's a very upbeat, humorous little game that is easy to recommend.

Oct - Uncharted 4 (PS4 Pro)

The C&R episode on this one gives a really well rounded view of Uncharted 4, and my opinion falls somewhere in the middle - technically brilliant, with some great storytelling and stellar performances, but Naughty Dog maybe should have shown a little self restraint as Uncharted’s gameplay loop wears pretty thin over this circa 15 hour adventure. Glad I played it, and the franchise has overall been a rollicking good ride, but I won’t be rushing to play The Lost Legacy any time soon and I hope Sony leaves the series be for the foreseeable future.

When you're feeling ready, you should definitely check out The Lost Legacy. I enjoyed it more than any other Uncharted specifically because it was more restrained, focused, and concise.

I definitely think I’ll get round to it one day as I have heard positive things, and particularly after the rather bloated Uncharted 4 the idea of a shorter, more refined experience does appeal. Will probably wait until it’s dropped scandalously cheap on PSN though...
