I just finished The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. It's...not my favorite. I found the travelling to be a bit of a slog, making me less likely to explore beyond what was necessary. I think I might have been better served playing the HD remake, but, oh well.
As it ranks for me now...

Link to the Past
Ocarina of Time
Link's Awakening
Majora's Mask
Wind Waker
Both NES titles

I realize this is usually just a list, but I want to give a little context. The 28 game titles below, in order from favorite to least favorite (whatever that means today) and their three word reviews represent both the games I rolled credits on this year, and all the games I’ve rolled credits on in the last nearly twenty years, having walked away from conventional video games as a hobby from about 1998 until December of twenty-seventeen. Sure there was a brief period of time where like everyone else I whacked a digital tennis ball with a Wiimote, and scored my share buckets, runs, goals, or touchdowns at friends houses, but somehow that never quite seemed like gaming in the conventional sense in the way that baking pre-made cookie dough doesn’t really feel like baking.

Of course both activities are baking, but if you’ve only ever worked with frozen cookie dough and all the sudden you want to mess around with all the spoons, spatulas, aprons, mixers, measuring cups, and whatever fondante is, it makes sense to get some guidance, and for that I have to thank the Cane & Rinse crew for all their hard work curating this artform, not to mention the larger C&R community on the forum for providing such a warm environment to further examine my new favorite form of play.

Stay safe and be well this holiday season everyone. Here’s looking forward to spending another year with all of you. This year’s been all dessert, or shall I say cake, now that you’ve helped me understand that reference.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Brought me back)
Super Mario Galaxy (Jack Kirby’s Mario)
Chrono Trigger (Finally beat Lavos)
Shadow of the Colossus (My bad guy)
The Legend of Zelda:Majora’s Mask (Scary good game)
Pikmin 3 (My girl’s thirsty)
Hollow Knight (Mite-y Miyazakian metroidvania)
Portal (Hole-y science puzzler)
Celeste (My poor pie)
Shovel Knight (Horny ditch digger)
The Last Guardian (Ueda’s Trico treat)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Smells like salt)
Super Mario Odyssey (Striking scavenger hunt)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Better than original)
Okami (Several genius strokes)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Still gets me)
Cave Story (Hell run outstanding)
Mario 3D World (Fun family Mario)
Super Smash Bros. U (Those credits smack)
Luigi’s Mansion (Breezy baroque boobuster)
The Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess (Moved the goalline)
Horizon Zero Dawn (Beastbots salvage game)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Missed my chance)
Hyper Light Drifter (Sparse cerulean swashbuckler)
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (African parade rules)
Star Fox 64 3DS (Is that it?)
Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon (More ghosts please)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (The bear flys)

Star Fox 64 3DS (Is that it?)
I finished this the other day on a plane and thought the same., it’s a significant improvement on the original so I can see why there was so much fanfare on the N64 release but its very brief.

I was wondering why C&R made a whole show on Starfox games rather than a show per game. Now I’m beginning to understand why.

Not quite the game I remember it was when I last played it all those years ago. It was the HD collection on PS3 this time so not sure if it’s the substandard version we were given or not. At some point I might dig out my phat PS3 and give the ps2 game a whirl to see if the magic is still there. All the fear and trepidation I used to feel playing it had gone completely and it seemed smaller, easier and less disgusting. HD polish doesn’t always help and I think here it most certainly hinders. Resident evil 7 in VR is also still fresh in my mind which oozes filth in comparison. Another one bites the dust as my “best games of all time” list is getting shorter.

December:
Starfox 64 3DS

I did play Lylat wars back in the day but mainly in multiplayer so never actually experienced the campaign. I recently finished Starfox on my SNES mini and didn’t realise it’s basically the same game (apologies if I’m wrong). I’m going to have a little break before the next one I think.

Always makes me sad to read that... :(

I played SH3 for the first time a few years ago and thought it was a great game, although not quite on the same level as the first two, especially SH2.

Legend of Zelda: link to the past

Not quite as good as I was expecting but seems to be very much the template for the mainline games which followed. I’ve never been a huge Zelda fan but have always found them enjoyable to play and this was no exception. Slightly fewer of the obscure secrets from the first entry and easier than the brutal second game so a more enjoyable ride. I still had to resort to a guide as some of the mechanics and “tricks” required to finish the game don’t seem inuitive at all.

Decent enough, but not really any more than that. Not as clever in its world building as the game it’s a prequel for, and it defintely runs out of ideas before the end, but I’ve played worse.

December 15th - Gris (Switch)

After a frustrating 2 month spell of playing games that you can't ever 'complete' or ones so hard it'll take me years to, Gris has been a revelation.

I won't say anything much about it as I think knowing much about it would spoil the experience, but I knew I'd adore it within a minute of it starting. It looks incredible. Like an amazing painterly animation. But it sounds even better. It's one of the best soundtracked games I've ever come across.

It'll get naysayers moaning it's not much of a game, too expensive and too short, but I couldn't care a less.

It's left me with that same feeling in my gut that I had playing Inside, Ico, Rime, Celeste etc.

A wondrous experience.

10/12 - Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition (Vergil - Son of Sparda)
15/12 - Forza Horizon 4: Fortune Island

This was a very cool piece of DLC, and another in the trend of good expansions for these games. It also follows the trend of them exploring more extreme terrain and weather conditions. This one in particular is pretty similar in concept to the Storm Island DLC for FH2, given the frequency of thunderstorms here too. The island itself is pretty bleak in terms of atmosphere, being a windswept Scottish island with not much greenery on it, but they still manage to make it interesting with nice environmental touches, with dramatic cliff sides and castles, Viking shipwrecks, and most impressively aurora that light up the sky at night. Makes for a lot of stunning scenes looking out over the mountainside with that in the colourful sky.

It's also particularly fun for drifting, which is great for me since I spend a lot of time doing that. They give you a new Drift Club story to go through, and some really nice roads for it too. Once mountainside pass in particular is one of the best drift spots in the series, and the whole thing is a drift zone, so getting ludicrously high scores on that is a lot of fun. The new treasure hunts are pretty entertaining too. They roll together PR stunts and the barn find mechanics together in a fun way. You get a little riddle telling you certain conditions to beat a PR stunt with, which gives you a little something to think about, before hunting down a treasure chest for a nice big chunk of money.

So pretty pleased with it in general. Really like that drift spot in particular. Often with these expansions after I finish them I don't tend to go back much afterwards, but I have a feeling I will be returning here a lot more often, just because of that one single road. Also looking forward to the next DLC they put out. I wonder if they will go wild again like they did with the Hot Wheels one for the last game. I have a feeling they probably won't go that far, but will still want to top Fortune Island.

Still brilliant fun, I wish they'd release it for a tenner or so on current gen, I'd snap it up! Nothing much more to say, but it's one of the all time great arcade racers - surely we're well overdue Outrun 3!?

I love that you found your PSP when tidying then sat down and completed a game on it! Awesome! I’m finally clearing out my parents loft after moving out ten years ago (whoops) and have been searching for games I thought I owned only to remember I sold them:(

Haha yeah the tidying kind of ran out of steam, seeing as I also had Parappa The Rappa and Guitaroo Man with it too  I very nearly added two to the completion list but that last stage in Parappa is a bitch!

From memory I don’t think I’ve ever completed an RTS before so this instantly becomes the best in class for me by default. It is very very good however and although not by normal type of game I’m glad I invested my time in it.

Ridiculously this is free to play without any microtransactions in sight. I won’t be buying the DLC/expansions and I gather that’s how they are making their money. Despite that It has changed my perspective on the genre in that I won’t be averse to trying another if it crosses my path.

The remaster of Warcraft 3, whenever that appears, will be something you’d probably enjoy.

I just completed my run of Fez. Doubt I'll go back for the New Game +. I really enjoyed the game but I found the end anti-climatic and I'm not great at keeping up with games that are about collecting just to collect.

I've never made it that far myself, although it's on my list to actually try to play through properly at some point, but everything I've ever read about the game suggests the NG+ really is the second half of the game. All the puzzles and fourth wall breaking stuff seem to make it a completely new experience.
