February 4th - DOOM (Switch)
February 7th - Oxenfree (Switch)
February 17th - Steamworld Dig 2 (Switch)
February 25th - The Fall Part 2: Unbound (Switch)
February 28th - Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (Switch)
March 4th - Subsurface Circular (Switch)
March 28th - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)
April 4th - Floor kids (Switch)
April 9th - Rime (Switch)

May 6th - Celeste (Switch)

So the glowing 10/10s were pretty spot on, weren't they? Over the last couple of years, I've discovered many of the 2D platformers I regard as the genres finest (DKCTF, Shovel & Specter Knight, NSMBrosU, Rayman Legends, Super Guacamelee) but Celeste would be right up there.

I liked it for so many reasons, but largely how the narrative made sense of the platforming. You're struggling to overcome personal issues in the game whilst struggling to overcome evermore difficult obstacles. It's so simple, but stopped me ever being annoyed at the game being overly unfair or finding it unrewarding. If I did get stuck on a section, I always knew I could beat it and I usually did. And when I took extra attempts to clear certain sections, the story felt like that had been deliberately designed to play that way.

Beat it in 10 hours with 2387 deaths, though 500 of those alone were on Celestial Resort, which I played in little bursts which didn't help.

I collected 43 strawberries, mostly on the early levels where I thought you needed to, but only found 1 b side. I presume it's worth finding more and unlocking the level post credits?

All in all, I found so much to love here. A narrative I could interpret as I so chose, probably the best controls I've ever seen in a 2D platformer, a great soundtrack, a fair challenge and constantly clever level design that discarded great ideas within seconds for yet another. Really deserves the high praise it got.

May 7th - Nintendo Labo (RC Car / Motorbike)

So I've only managed to do these two so far, but I personally was grinning like an idiot building these kits. The first took mere minutes, but my 4.5 year old daughter loved helping me press out the card, make it up and move it around. Seeing things via the IR camera was an extra reason to play for a while too.

After half hour of helping me with the bike though, boredom set in for her, so perhaps it's more aimed at slightly older kids. Like me. Because I frequently found myself thinking "that's so clever" or "how on earth did someone make this?".

The overall presentation is amazing too. Nintendo touches of quality everywhere, from the colourful box it comes in, the welcome message on the flap as you open it, the sleeve of the game card box you can personalize, the little drawings hidden in the cardboard sheets of what you're building. And then the videos themselves are amazing; colourful, well animated, interactive and intuitive. IKEA furniture NEEDS this.

The games themselves haven't really been touched yet. My daughter got frustrated at being shit on the bike within a straight so I think I'll box the rest up and wait for a rainy day. But the potential for it is huge.

Overall, I marvel at the creativity involved in making it. And even if it ends up in the bin in a few weeks time, I'm so glad I got to experience it. It's not like anything else I've ever played. Or rather, made.

I've probably completely misunderstood what you're saying, but Sony and MS often pull games from their digital stores don't they?

Sometimes they do, but the implication here was that an older version of a game (DK:TF on Wii U) was removed from sale at the time of the newer version’s launch specifically to drive people towards the newer release (and its home platform).

Spoiler: show
Jan 7 - Bleed (PC)
Jan 19 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Feb 11 - Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
Feb 28 - Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (PC)
Mar 8- Final Fantasy III (PSVita - PSP version)
Mar 21 - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) Three stars on all 150cc cups.
Mar 24 - Golf Story (Switch)
Apr 2 - Nier: Automata (PS4)
Apr 23 - Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)
May 3 - Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies - Turnabout Reclaimed DLC (3DS)
A stand-alone case this one. I wasn't that taken with it sadly. It played up the silliness of having an orca involved too much (and I'm saying that about Ace Attorney, a series that loves some silliness).

May 5 - Final Fantasy IV (PSVita - PSP version)
My other attempt to play through FF4 was 15 years ago. It was the first pre-PS1 JRPG I tried and having finished it now I think I got a good two-thirds of the way through it.

Active Time Battle does bring a new dimension and pace to battle but I've played plenty of games after FF4 with i, so I'm too used to it to get excited about it. (Not FF4's fault)

The plot is a nice step up from the previous games (low bar) even if it shepherds some of the characters in and out a bit too quickly for me to care about them.

05/05 - Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition (Nero/Dante - Devil Hunter)
08/05 - Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition (Vergil - Devil Hunter)

Vergil might actually be my favourite character to play as in this game. He's just so good at everything, and all his weapons feel great and viable. Might be because they had to make him playable in every level of the game, so they couldn't give him a specialisation like with Nero and Dante. Strangely enough though, I find there is one point I have trouble with Vergil, and that's the Angelo Credo fight. So hard to get past his shield. That's tricky with all the characters, but with Vergil in particular, everything just seems to bounce off.

Just finished Alice: Madness Returns. What a strange experience... I can't quite decide if I liked it or not. Aesthetically there's a lot to love, but the enemy encounters left a lot to be desired and the story... Well. It goes to some places alright, but between the overwrought dialogue and some fairly pedestrian voice acting I feel the subject matter was pretty crassly handled.

I will have to think about it some more before the end of the month. I doubt I'll go back for 100% completion though. It proved fairly tough in places on Easy mode and there's far too many collectibles.

The Evil Within 2 (PS4)

After a rough start, this developed into an enjoyable romp through a well-realised game world. There was a lot to struggle with - bad writing, ineffectual weapons, very gradual upgrades, and the usual hackeyed horror tropes - but I was eventually won over due to the strength of the gameplay, which has open-world tactical stealth options mixed in with corridor crawling and boss fights. The game seemed well balanced to me on Normal difficulty, and there were options to engage or slip by the more difficult enemies depending on your approach and desire for a challenge. It's the first longer game (took me 21 hours) that I've played for a while that I wasn't thinking, "Come on, just end already" for the final third. Enjoyable throughout.

The weapon restrictions/balancing was really interesting. The handgun, for which you find by far the most ammo, is ineffectual when you consider its low power, weapon sway, and enemy movement. But it has a use for distraction, for triggering environmental hazards, and for targetting enemy legs, and came into its own in the endgame. The shotgun was better but in general it was hard to one shot anything due to head-ducking enemies, so there was always pressure on your ammo stocks and other weapons (sniper rifle, crossbow) were forced into service. So the game succeeded there, I guess, in requiring the full range of options to be used.

Stealth kills are a thing, but some enemies take 2-3 successful stealth attacks to kill, which caused some frustration early on. There were one or two forced stealth sections, but these were short and not onerous, and fitted well within the game, which as mentioned, did a good job of mixing up gameplay and settings.

The story was ok, once you accepted the universe you were in, it was pretty decent, and brought home the bacon at the end of the game. The mini-open-world bits were excellent, really well-realised, and made you engage with them through scavenging for loot and materials.

I thought all the game systems were well-implemented, by an undoubtedly talented team. I had no bugs to speak of - some mild clipping of enemies through walls and that was that. It was a strange mixture of stealth, immersive sim, and survival horror. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

And no Pigsy's Perfect 10 in this playthrough? :) I only remember it being significant because it seemed to be the first really substantial DLC at a time where DLC was seen as much more of a cash grab.

re: The Evil Within 2

I would just say that playing on Normal difficulty, the game gave me a fair amount of health, to the extent that I was able to absorb plenty of hits. I'd imagine the game changes significantly at higher difficulties, as your mobility is not great and avoiding enemy attacks rather than absorbing some of them would become more of an issue.

I finished Rayman Origins! Two nights ago, I figured I was in the final level but it was the bonus, Livid Dead world. Talk about tricky. Had to finish the game proper last night. I don't know how others feel as I still need to listen to the C&R episode on it, but that game kicked my butt quite a bit. Trying to decide if being tenacious at games is the same as being good. I had to die a lot of times to get to the perfect run, but, on the other hand, I got to the perfect run. Rayman held a mirror to my skill and I don't know how to react to my own reflection!

I have no added Super Meat Boy to my wishlist.

I beat Titanfall 2.

I had heard good things, but it was way, way better than I expected. Definitely worth picking up.

I also beat The Raven Remastered. It's a fun point and click game but it's a bit buggy.

Worth playing if you can find it though.

Haven't kept up.

11 May - Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Dreamcast). Oh the stories I have to tell. You'll hear it on the podcast.

11 May - Raging Justice (Switch)

Did it together with my son on wimp level. Playing on a higher difficulty isn't really rewarding at the moment, just more annoying. Game is too unrefined for that.

22 April - Soul Blade (PS)

Arcade mode playthrough with Rock

22 April - Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)

Arcade mode playthrough with Kilik

22 April - Soul Calibur II (Gamecube)

Arcade mode playthrough with Link

23 March - Soul Calibur III

Character Story mode playthrough with Tira

23 March - Soul Calibur IV

Character Story mode playthrough with Darth Vader

I’ve got to admit this was far better second time around and having played it just after ninja theory’s previous work it comes as a huge step up in terms of production values. The use of sound is pretty fantastic and ordinarily I wouldn’t be a fan of some of the music genres used but they work incredibly well. A highlight being the club sequence where the choice of music absolutely propelled the gameplay onto another level.
I wasn’t particularly enamoured with the conventional entries in the series but if ninja theory did a DMC2 I would buy it Day one.

Heavenly sword was a bit of a slog. I think the difficulty of some of the boss fights especially the last one are out of keeping with the rest of the game. The QTEs are the worst example I can think of particularly when you’ve ground your way to the end of a boss fight only to restart because of a faile single button press. Andy serkis is undeniably brilliant though.

Enslaved faired much better. Very slick and streamlined. The platforming (albeit simple) is still pretty exhilarating at times during the set pieces. Certain story events weren’t as weighty second time through but overall it looks, sounds and plays well. No pigsy for me as I didn’t have fond memories of it but it was pretty hefty if I recall.

08/05 - Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition (Vergil - Devil Hunter)
12/05 - Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

And thus ends another adventure in Kamurocho. This one ended up being a bit of a mixed bag, but still very good overall. I wouldn't put it among my favourites in the series, but it's definitely nowhere near the bottom either. It's a game that tries a lot of new things for these games, with mixed results.

As I've mentioned before, the combat is the biggest part of this. Being rebuilt from the ground up to be much more fluid and taking physics in to account. Managed to feel fresh and familiar at the same time. The emphasis on physics makes attacks feel like they have more impact than before, and is results in some very amusing ragdoll antics. But at the same time, it comes at the cost of precision. Sometimes it can feel somewhat sloppy in trying to hit your target. And the new Ultimate Heat mode just exaggerates these aspects, in both the positives and negatives. I also came to the conclusion that zooming in the camera in this mode is way more of a drawback than anything positive it offers. It obscures too much of your view, even when you're only up against a single opponent. Mashing that button at the end of a combo for that close-up finisher is still very satisfying though.

The upgrade system didn't end up improving from when I talked about it earlier either. It starts off thankfully fixing the slow start these games tend to have, but doesn't really ever go far beyond that point. The evolution of your abilities feels pretty negligible compared to previous games. I think the lack of weapons also was a contributing factor to this. A lot of the variety in Heat moves you could do in previous games were dependent on what weapon you happened to have equipped. Without being able to reliably do that, and the weapons that are available being so lacking in variety, that meant for a lack of unique Heat moves to do with them. The game also lacked a particular move that was in several of the previous games, where you could pull off a powerful counterattack after blocking a hit. Really missed having that.

In the end the game took me 33 hours and 24 minutes to get through. Significantly less than with some of the more recent entries. Part of this is because there's simply less content to the game itself, but also because of how much I was interested in getting in to. As these games have gone on, I've played more and more of the major side activities, as their quality has generally risen with each game. But this time they seemed to dip somewhat, and I wasn't interested in playing them. I did complete the fishing minigame, but that ended up being shorter than I was expecting. Only three levels. I didn't bother with the baseball team management thing, not enjoying the batting minigame or the team management aspect. And I found the gang building minigame to also be pretty un-engaging, only doing a few levels of it before deciding it wasn't worth the effort. So yeah, sadly it doesn't have a patch on the Yakuza 5 side activities, even if they did kind of hurt the pacing of the game somewhat.

I really enjoyed the story though. Again, not the best the series has ever been, but still very good. This one mostly focuses on completely new characters, who are mostly pretty likable. There were a couple of character in particular I was pleasantly surprised to come around to after them initially not making the best first impression. The plot of this one goes in some pretty wild directions too. It may even have the most ludicrous twist out of any of these games. So, spoilers ahead.
Spoiler: show
As mentioned before, Nagumo is the most stand-out character. Originally comes across as just some punk getting in your way and not knowing who he's dealing with, but comes around to show a more caring a friendly side. Although he still remains a bit of a doofus, and has a bit of that kind of "big fish in a small pond" attitude that fits for this small-time Yakuza from a little sleepy fishing village.

Hirose is another character who I changed my mind on. One that happened a lot later, and I was more surprised to see turn around. This is the guy portrayed by Beat Takeshi, He's the head of the Hiroshima family you spend most of your time with in that city, and comes across as this old, tired guy who doesn't take much seriously, but knows more than he lets on. So from his earlier role in the story, and the delivery of his voice work, it kind of sounded like he was phoning it in a bit. Like they only got him in to record a minimal number of lines, and the lines that he did record sounded very low-energy. It's hard to tell in a different language though. Towards the end though, it turns out he's deeply involved in the secret plot that takes over the focus of the story in the latter parts of the game. He ends up getting a lot more screen time, and his personality as being old, tired, and secretive makes a lot more sense, as it's revealed he has been used as a tool to keep that secret from leaking out for most of his entire life, having to kill people close to him to do so. When his arc reaches its climax, you finally see him struggling to face having to kill the members of his own (yakuza) family, to whom he has basically been a father, he starts to crack as he hesitates, which ultimately ends up being his demise. So then in his final moments he goes from desperation to regret, finally being able to open up about this secret life he's lived, and finding something to finally break free from that terrible obligation.

That secret, which is the big twist in the late game, is really something though. Turns out that when WWII ended, a shipbuilding company, that is basically a front for the major yakuza clan in the Hiroshima area, secretly and illegally continued to build a massive warship, and hid it in a secret underground base under the harbour! That's right! It's not some secret plot that someone was laundering money, or someone killed someone important, it's a massive WWII era battleship! They reveal it by opening up a huge secret trapdoor in the bottom of the harbour, that it rises up out of, like something out of Thunderbirds. Although, to be fair, there is money laundering and government officials collaborating with the yakuza involved in the plot, but the fact that it revolves around that ship is just so absurd. It really stretches your sense of disbelief. They just about make it work though, by the absolute skin of their teeth though.

There's another sort of major twist near the end. Long before the game came out, the developers were talking about how this would be the end of Kiryu's story. So, from the sounds of that, one might suspect that means he dies as the end. Not really sure what to think about this, or quite how to describe it either. Turns out, he doesn't, Except he does, sort of. The thing with these games is that no-one ever really dies unless you absolutely, 100%, undeniably see it happen on screen, and they make a big dramatic deal out of it. They are notorious for faking out on characters dying. With Kiryu, they go through all that. He takes several bullets protecting Haruka and her son in the finale, when he's already in a very beaten up state too. And there's a long scene where he's being cradled in the arms of the other characters, saying his dying words, before going limp. Then after that there are several scenes of people mourning him, and even a leaning against the fourth wall with Akiyama probing Date for details, as he was supposedly the only person who saw Kiryu's corpse. Date confirms it, and we even get a flashback scene of Kiryu writing a letter to Daigo, talking about their relationship through life, and giving him his dying request. At that point I was thinking two thing; "Wow, they really went and did it!", and "They better not bait-and-switch this, I'll be mad." And what do you know? It's a bait-and-switch. But one that had an interesting twist. They show a scene with Kiryu in the hospital, approached by some shady man from the government, whose face isn't shown. He's offering Kiryu hush money to keep the what he knows a secret (although the ship is already out in the open by this point). Instead of taking the money, Kiryu's deal is that it be arranged for him to be declared dead. Date is in the room when this happens, so he knows, but agrees to go along with it as well. But that's how it ends. Everyone except Date thinks Kiryu is dead, because legally he is, and he disappears.

Another crazy plot point, even by the standards of this series. Given my thoughts only minutes before, I should have hated it, but I didn't. I guess it's a good way for the series to move on from Kiryu, but still allowing him to make a return in some form later down the line. It'll be interesting to see where and how he turns up next. I hope they don't bring him back too soon though, and that when they do, they do it in an appropriate way. Give him a different role. Even if he's not dead, this does seem like it should be the end of the story of the Dragon of Dojima.
So overall a good time, despite some flaws. And a story that may not have focused on my favourite characters, but managed to still be really engaging, and brought some very surprising moments too.

It's interesting how similar this game is to Yakuza 3 in many ways. Much like that game, this one is a new start for the series, rebuilding things from scratch somewhat. Both leading to a game that is a bit smaller and less polished than others in the series. But on top of that, the setting and story elements are pretty similar too. Both have a pretty big emphasis on family, both start in the orphanage, and both are partially set in a more rural, laid back, coastal town. Also both feature local yakuza families who originally start off as being antagonistic to Kiryu. Not knowing who he is, and acting like they're a big deal when in reality they're pretty small-time. But then both coming around to being fast friends with Kiryu as they accept him and look up to him.

(Apologies for any typos, poor sentences etc. It's late right now and I'm too tired to proof read everything at the moment)

What a coincidence! I finished Yakuza 6 today myself, and I almost completely agree with everything you just wrote, especially in regard to the ending. :)

My main issues with the game are the imprecise combat and that I would have preferred to see some of the returning characters have a more significant role. Overall, solid entry in the series with some interesting elements, but not my favourite by any means.

So that's all the different characters played through. Doubt I'll carry on playing this right now. Might go back to Nero/Dante and Vergil at some point, but I don't really feel like it right now, and don't have much desire to play Lady/Trish again at all really.

Not that it wasn't fun of course. These characters are pretty interesting to use. Lady in particular is very unusual, with her focus on ranged attacks. Forces you to come at the game with a completely different mindset. It seems with her though, things don't really go just "okay" as much as with other characters. More common for things to go very well, or very badly. A lot of her attacks have her rooted to the spot too, which can be kind of annoying. Can't dodge out of a lot of them, but if you don't use them, you won't really get anything done. Makes some of the bosses a chore too. Final boss in particular. Trish on the other hand is very fun to play. She only has one weapon technically, but her combat style plays like two in one. Also has some pretty cool and over-the-top crowd control moves. A lot of them even feel kind of overpowered. She also has a bit of a problem with long attack chains that you can't get out of though, so sometimes that can be a pain. Otherwise though, very fun.

I also had a little go on the Legendary Dark Knight mode with Nero a few days ago. It's pretty hilarious, just drowning you in so many enemies for you to tear through. Although, I kind of cheated in that little bit I played. I used the DLC costume that gives you infinite Devil Trigger. Very useful in that mode where you can quickly get overwhelmed, and where bosses are very tough too. When I've tried it before without that cheat costume, I couldn't even beat the first boss, although I was fairing okay against the regular enemies up until that point. But I doubt I'll play more of that mode. At least not seriously. I would want to do it properly without cheating if I was going to try to actually beat it, and I'm obviously not really good enough at the game for that.
