Super Bomberman R is one of those games that is overdesigned to its detriment.

The 3d visuals just get in the way of the game - it looks and feels so much less precise than the 2d BM games.

A port of any of the SNES or Saturn BM games would be far more preferable.

I completely agree - Saturn Bomberman is one of my all-time favourites- but they’ve been using polygons for Bomberman since the late 90s!

We play the SNES Super Bomberman in the office on the (hacked) SNES classic and it's still a total blast though we're obviously limited to 2 player matches (in fact its way more fun than Super Bomberman R which is visually rather muddy and has a weirdly confusing UI). A friend had the Saturn version back in the day but even then the possibility of having the necessary number of players and hardware all in one place at the same time seemed like some kind of cosmic alignment in terms of possibility. Didn't it require chaining two multi-taps together?

A port for the Switch seems like such a no-brainer - a single Switch and a couple of extra controllers and you're in business.

Perfect example as any of the 'fixing something that wasn't broken' school of design.

But it's been patched right up to September 2018, is it still that bad? Lots of patch notes detail improvements to framerate, camera stuff, extra modes etc... It kinda sounds like the main complaint is the grind to get cosmetics which wouldn't really bother me. It's just if it plays well... Man I wish I could try it first!

I just got Super Bomberman R on Xbox One as part of Games With Gold. It’s fine - and yes - they did a lot of work to it on Switch post launch.

In the absence of a definitive HD/online port of Saturn Bomberman it does the job.

Personally, I just don’t find Bomberman that fun anymore as I did when I was 11.

There’s other games that fill that group, couch co-op vibe. Over cooked for example has a good vibe as a group and when it comes to competitive games, well there’s tones of those.

Bomberman was one of those games I thought I wanted more of when I played it, regardless of launch issues it just felt a bit shallow.

I don’t think I’d recommend buying it - personally.

Well that new Pokemon game sure does look like a Pokemon game.

Would’ve been nice to see them try something a bit more experimental, but not every franchise is going to take the Zelda route.

Speaking of games being overdesigned to their detriment... hoo boy, Trials Rising.

I don't think I've ever played a game where the core gameplay is so good but the developer insists on putting so many barriers and annoying distractions in front of it. There are so many unnecessary bells and whistles plastered all over what should be a very simple game. The UI/map is almost laughably cluttered. I really couldn't care less about racing against ghosts or stupid win poses (dabbing? really?)or 'sponsors' or (utterly meaningless) 'leveling up' or loot boxes and what my rider looks like or what clothes he wears.... Jeez, talk about over-egging the pudding...

You remember that spoof video someone made a few years ago 'what if Doom was made today'? Playing this game feels like that at times.

And who on Earth though the stadium events (where you have to essentially win three races back to back without crashing once) would be a fun thing to do? They are so much harder than anything else in the game that it feels incredibly unbalanced. I haven't played one in years, but I'm also a bit baffled at the heavy emphasis on racing in general.... Is this really what people want from a Trials game? Wasn't it more fun when it was basically a dexterity/platforming physics challenge type thing?

Well, I can understand Nintendo wanting to play it safe for their first mainline titles on Switch. Pokémon is an incredibly formulaic series, but it's a formula that seems to work and I'd rather see them deliver on that premise rather than potentially try to fix what isn't broken. But I can also understand where those who would prefer to see a reimagining of sorts are coming from.

Here's the trailer for those who haven't seen it:

Hopefully a Pokemon region based on the UK will be enough to get the C&R team to finally cover the series :)

After a Final Fantasy series I'm not sure it's likely anytime soon but i could be taking out of my hat.

New Resi ports are thirty quid each, which is a bit steep, unfortunately. I've bought plenty of overpriced stuff off the eShop (Cave Story was probably the most egregious) but I'm a much more sensible consumer these days/today/hopefully tomorrow.

Decided to give Bomberman a go, as has my brother-in-law so we're in this together. Cheers the the thoughts, folks. I'll report back down the line with my own...

Sorry for the late response mate, I've just been so busy of late with birthdays, visitors, influenza and because of all that - work when I went back  .

Right, cool.

Yeah, a lot of people think that these convertors simply turn your console into a HD remaster machine. A level of expectation is certainly required to appreciate these the best.

I notice that GameCube stuff played through these appears to be more vivid, or appears so I suppose as I'm used to seeing scan-lines, I think it looks wonderful.

Jaggies, yes, agreed. Although I honestly don't mind them and as soon as I start to focus on the gameplay simply forget about them.

Interesting about the IR remote thing, that seems a bot mad. Any sort of cool settings you can mess with in there ??

Ultimately, anything that makes old software more accessible and cleans things up without any lag, is good in my opinion, "peoples mileage will vary" on this as to what is considered acceptable but it's an interesting discussion which ever field you set up camp in.

What have you recently been using on it then ??

DualShocker's review sums it up better than I ever could (more at the link, including screenshot):
Once the remote was synced, I was able to access the settings for the MK-II. Its feature list isn’t too extensive, but it does offer some interesting choices. There is a line doubler for when the GameCube displays 480i content, to help create a picture quality more akin to 480p. You can turn on scanline to simulate a CRT TV. While slightly nostalgic, scanlines really shine on the GameCube’s rare 240p games and GBA games. You may adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation. There are even options for tweaking the MK-II’s on-screen display (OSD) settings, which is for the settings.
Nothing in there that I need, quite frankly. But it's neat that it's there.

So I've been dipping in and out of numerous games over the past few days, mostly to compare and contrast how each of them fare with the new input. Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Wind Waker, Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX and Viewtiful Joe. But I've (unsurprisingly!) fallen down the rabbit hole of RE4 Mercs yet again, this time with the unpatched NTSC version and Progressive Scan enabled. Absolute heaven. And I'm really happy to notice that my Elgato capture device is having a much easier time dealing with the digital HDMI input as opposed to the standard composite one that caused a few colorization problems in the past.

Speaking of which, one other thing worth mentioning is that, even beyond mere graphical considerations, the HDMI input is also helping a lot with future-proofing my GC collection for future TVs, for example. The only thing that worries me a little is that my current GameCube is starting to sound her age at times. Thank God I still have a few first-gen replacement units lying around for when the inevitable happens.

Anyway, I've been meaning to replay RE2 after the remake last month and now seems like the perfect opportunity. I'll probably sneak a peek at the pre-rendered backgrounds in RE0 and Baten Kaitos over the weekend, and I'm also gonna take a look at the differences between PAL and NTSC with Progressive Scan for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes while I'm at it, since I have both versions. Curious to see if I can spot anything! :)

Love that patchwork owl man 😎.

Nice, be interesting to hear about the Metroid comparisons. I do love that Echos NTSC coverart.

Gen 8 of Pokemon looks intriguing so far. Having it set in a England-like area is an interesting choice and I wonder what the Pokemon are going to look like. The logos seem to hint at possible legendary type wolf which would be the first time since Mewtwo that I would be interested in a legendary! As for the starters, they are all pretty cute but I bloody love the fire rabbit, he looks great! My only fear is that he might end up as a Fire Fighting type (that bandage on the nose is not encouraging...) which would instantly kill my enthusiasm for the thing. Honestly, Fire Fairy, Fire Electric, even just plain Fire; anything but another Fire Fighting starter! The blue chameleon will be my backup plan if he turns out that way or if there is just another new Fire type that will appeal to me more. Battles themselve seem a lot more dynamic to watch now which is a nice change for the series. Overall, interested to see how this will turn out,

Can you play Gamecube games on Wii-U? As in original discs. Seems like if there's basically a Wii inside there for the Wii games, GC should also work, but I can't seem to find confirmation online, only stuff about how to hack it to play copied games.
