My only thoughts on Forza and their ilk is that I find it terribly boring how these games pretty much exclusively feature supercars... Like, yeah, cool, another Porche or Ferrari... I legitimately want a simulation style racer where all the cars are models I could actually afford. Imagine it - your three starter cars are the Ford Ranger, Dacia Sandero and Honda Civic. Fuel efficiency and horsepower actually matter, because the vehicles are so wildly different. I mean... The best parts of Top Gear are not the car porn, but rather the absurd consumer vehicle challenges!

I know virtually nothing about cars, but FH seems to have tons of regular type road cars in it to me, both retro and modern...

The hilariously titled 2 Fast Driver, you say?

All I'm saying is that this came out in 2005 and that Nintendo has been scared to make a new F-Zero since. Coincidence? I think not.

PS: Also, let's not forget about all the german bus simulators, please:

What you mention here is true and a lot of people generally feel the same.

I’m someone that plays a lot of driving games and has been in the same boat as yourself a number of times.

What I’d suggest that while starting off in a Ranger, Focus and Civic is cool, it soon gets boring if you have an underpowered vehicle on high speed circuit or road.

While it’s still fun, challenging and engaging driving a high powered vechile on a slow speed road.

Even tuning up average road cars has its limits as you just end up with a corner crashing rocket car.

Also from a game perspective, there’s more scope to high performance vehicles in terms of challenge and actually highlights.

Over the years since Gran Turismo first appeared developers have worked out a good mix of this issue I feel. Starting players off in slower powered cars working up to elite race cars.

I also think it’s a wonderful education to those that maybe don’t appreciate cars as much, as to what makes a great road car or race car and not just sticking a great big hulking V10 over the front wheels.

As you say though, perhaps more a ‘hybrid’. I shall load up the first games and look out for those band posters and such.

Anyone else care to chime in on this?
😄
I have always thought of it as a motorsport festival with the stages etc for parties each day. I had a 3 month trial of Groove (I think that is what the MS version of Spotify is called) for FH3 so was playing my own music on there. Just dipped my toes into 4 so not sure if you can do the same again.

The feature unfortunately isn't in 4 in any form. They shut down Groove as a streaming service, but you can still use the app as a media player.

It's also actually possible to take advantage of the custom soundtrack feature in 3 without having to sign up for the streaming service, and the feature still works now post-shutdown. If you upload your own music files to OneDrive, you can then put them in a playlist in Groove, which the game can then recognise. They liked to keep that feature a bit of a secret though, for obvious reasons. How well it works seems kind of inconsistent too. I've noticed for some reason it just won't play certain albums.

Finally getting around to listening to this. Pleasantly surprised to get some more love for Dynasty Warriors 9 in there. (Though the bit you use from AC Odyssey is missing the main ‘hook’, which feels weird given I know the piece so well now... hehe)

And you got in something from Warriors Orochi 4 as well? I imagine I’m the only one who’d recognise that :)

As pretty much a lay-gamer these days, I have little to nothing to add to naming titles, but this was pretty epic. Some of the clips are very evocative.

Not when I listen to the Sound of Play podcast, every Wednesday on iTunes, Google Play or wherever you get your podcasts. Cane and Rinse airs every Friday BUT Patreon subscribers can get an uncut, unedited version a week early for the meagre sum of 1 US dollar, or roughly 73 pence.

Not “uncut/unedited” - that would be lazy (and awful)!

Extended (or unabridged)!

Ahh, righto. The last time I did an unedited podcast, we had a guy ramble on about some obscure PC mech game (Shogi, I think?) while others would try to interject and move the topic somewhere interesting. Suffice it to say, it wound up being an hour of discomfort.

In this particular instance, I did two episodes of the TAY Podcast for Kotaku's community forum... I think they only ever did two or three episodes. I've also been on a few leftist political podcasts including, most recently, a three-episode run on Radical Democrats Radio, but something went funky with the Skype call and the audio is crap. I've been on another couple of, "Hey, let's try a podcast!" stints that I'm pretty confident never got uploaded or edited. XD

I'll find a link or two. I usually start a little nervous before really getting into the groove, but that's a broadcasting thing everyone seems to cope with.

I'm on episodes 1 and 3 here, as "PyramidHeadcrab" :
