“Checkpoint!”

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, SEGA AM2’s iconic coin-op racer Out Run is the subject of our latest podcast retrospective. Leon, Ryan (new to the game in 2016!) and returning guest Dan Clark talk arcade awe, sprite-scaling, Magical Sound Showers, and special techniques as well as touching upon the myriad – successful and unsuccessful – conversions over the decades. The panel also remember the game’s direct legacy of spin-offs and unofficial sequels, stopping short of OutRun 2 – which will get its own podcast in the future.

Music used in this issue:

Track 1: Magical Sound Shower by Hiroshi Kawaguchi
Track 2: Last Wave by Hiroshi Kawaguchi

Cane and Rinse 237 was edited by Ryan Hamann.

Been looking forward to this one, certainly one of my strongest arcade memories. What a fantastic game - I was in Blackpool last weekend and visited at least 5 arcades trying to find a cabinet, but it was a lost cause :(

Wonderful podcast this one.

One of those ones that surprise you.

Good content, research, enthusiasm and community contribution.

I'll certainly be downloading it and giving it a go on my N3DS.

Did you guys upgrade your mics or something? Is it just me or is there something really different about the audio quality in this ep?

It sounded different to me also. Must be something that Ryan did...

If it helps, I thought it sounded a touch 'echoey', like you were in your kitchen or something Leon.

Yes indeed.
I was in the usual place using the usual set-up, so I'm not sure why it would be different to normal.
We'll see how the GTAV show sounds to see if I need to address anything at my end.
Jay, how is my audio from last Saturday sounding to you?

My guess is that Ryan had accidentally put a filter over the audio (or it's a default like with Garageband). Didn't pick up on this before going live because I listened to it through the desktop speakers, not headphones. Unfortunately, with headphones it's quite obvious - apologies

I've been playing around with some new settings. I found a mastering setup that sounds really rich but comes with the echoes, so I might go back to the drawing board if I can't sort that bit out, because it annoyed me a bit too.

So, I've been binge playing this a bit of late, we've been away for a family Christening and the quick pick up and play of this title has suited it perfectly.

Still not managed to beat it yet but I'm getting there. I've reached the final stretch a few times now, so I'll get there.

I'm starting to get the 'feeling' this games gives as well I think, the satisfaction of the bends and the beauty in the different scenery's.

Looks wicked on the 3DS with the 3D on too.

Wonder if they've still got a cabinet down Southend front......

Inspired by this great podcast I recently compiled the following videos which show all 5 potential endings.
Had loads of fun doing it. Splash Wave is legitimately up there with my favourite Sega song of all time.
