“Nothing looks more suspicious in America than someone who’s actually prepared to make something.”

Leon, James, Jay and Sean take on Rockstar Games‘ critical and commercial behemoth, Grand Theft Auto V. The panel dissect the open world, the gameplay mechanics and the unholy trinity of characters, as well as the game’s story and script. Expanding online component GTA Online is also on the menu and up for discussion. As usual we also get to hear about the experiences of the ever-reliable and articulate Cane and Rinse community on their experiences of playing one of the most successful games ever released.

Music used in this issue:

Track 1: Welcome to Los Santos by Tangerine Dream/Woody Jackson/The Alchemist/Oh No
Track 2: A Bit of an Awkward Situation by Tangerine Dream/Woody Jackson/The Alchemist/Oh No

Cane and Rinse 238 was edited by Jay Taylor.

Really great podcast guys! I also really enjoyed how almost every correspondent (including me!) started their post with some form of "Red Dead Redemption was awesome!"

Been looking forward to this issue for a while because of how many hours I spent playing GTA Online with my friends. Really interesting discussion! I found the analysis of Trevor's behavior especially fascinating. (I did enjoy the story mode as well, but GTA Online is where I spent most of my time.)

I thought I'd post my first ever post by saying another great episode! It covered a lot of thoughts and feelings that I also shared about GTA V, a game that I personally sum up as a great technical achievement that is only let down by the writing. Offence, juvenile writing doesn't really require that much talent.

I didn't engage with the online aspect for one main reason: I live in Australia, and Internet is god awful here. Sure you can have all the data you want, just don't expect good speeds.

On a related musical note: this game did introduce me to the band X, and I now own two albums of theirs ("Los Angeles" and "Wild Gift"). I haven't gone back to the game in a while, and I'm sure at some stage I'll revisit, but for the moment the musical memories are an interesting side effect of playing GTA V, far more than the characters.

Thanks Josh, I definitely relate to your musical memories of the game. Before I played GTAV I'd never heard of the band Hot Snakes but their 'This Mystic Decade' is another one of those tracks that I love listening to while ripping up the roads trying to escape whoever's chasing me.
