R-Type and R-Type II - Cane and Rinse 276

Post by JaySevenZero » July 10th, 2017, 12:58 pm

“BLAST OFF AND STRIKE THE EVIL BYDO EMPIRE!”

1987: Inspired by Aliens and Gradius, a compact but crack team at Irem produced a horizontally scrolling shoot-’em up that would become a genre icon, R-Type. Leon, Michiel and returning guest Dan Clark consider what made R-Type – along with its litany of remarkable home conversions – such a Force to be reckoned with. The panel – along with Cane and Rinse community correspondents also return to the tough as old boots sequel R-Type II, as well as its remixed but slowdown-plagued SNES counterpart, Super R-Type.

Music used in this issue:

1. Opening Battle Theme by Masahito Ishizaki.
2. Nameless Soldiers by Masahiko Ishida.

Cane and Rinse 276 was edited by Sean O'Brien.

Enjoyed this, and was very excited to hear about a new updated version of R-Type on Amstrad! Also, I genuinely don't know if Leon knows how hilarious that completely dead pan delivery of 'not to be confused with the Honda Type-R or Ridge Racer Type 4' was

Look at it, it's gorgeous!

This was on the show notes but we didn't get around to talking about it.

Wow, that Amstrad longplay...

And yeah, I love how closely that animation short approximates R-Type's ICONIC stage 1.

Michiel tipped me off to this mention and just wanted to say thanks very much for the shout out! Here's my R-Type No Death clear that was mentioned in the podcast. I only started listening yesterday after a comment on one of my Golden Axe Clears got mentioned but I'm a big fan already!

Thank you very much. I listened to the Golden Axe episode yesterday and was instantly hooked. It's amazing to hear such obvious passion balanced with coherent detail and analysis. I couldn't believe it was 2 hours when I got to the end of it. It motivated me to do yet another Golden Axe achievement run as well which I'll put on the Youtube channel on Saturday morning! Keep up the good work and thanks for the warm welcome!

Thank you very much my friend and thanks for tipping me off to the podcast, it's much appreciated. I'm really glad you enjoy the videos and thanks for taking the time to like and comment. There's one every week and I'm currently working through a multipart longplay of Shining Force on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis which will be out soon in weekly instalments!

Ah, we have a friend of the show who is a massive Shining Force fan - Ashley Day.

We'll be sure to let him know.
