Games Completed 2013
Re: Games completed 2013
Ah. I like having impetus to collect fruit in the same way that I liked having the urgency to not waste too much time in Pikmin 1. I just don't like that whatever the theoretical maximum number of days you could spend on the planet in Pikmin 3 is (a podcast said 100, apparently) isn't ever an option. In Pikmin 1, whether you collect ship parts or not, you've got 30 days. In Pikmin 3, if I didn't collect fruit for a couple of days (let's say I spend a day getting to a boss without getting fruit, a day fighting the boss and losing a bunch of pikmin, a day growing more pikmin to refight) I could suddenly find myself in a position where the only option is to restore back to a save of an earlier day, which is just a bad piece of design. I don't want the game to force me to optimise my game at every single turn, I want to beat (or not, as the case was with Pikmin 1) the game once and then return to it with a desire to do better; and I get why Pikmin 3 is designed this way, because they want to segment the gameplay (even more than they already had in the first place). I just wish that doing as much as possible in a single day was left to the mission mode.

Re: Games completed 2013
I recently 100%'d Super Mario Galaxy 2. It was certainly surprising when, out of nowhere, Nintendo doubled the number of stars in each level with the green star challenges. I really liked these challenges, though. I was fairly familiar with each level by that point, so I really had to think "if I were a game designer, where would I hide a star?". The stars had a more exploratory style, like Banjo-Kazooie, rather than the strict objective-based stars typical of Galaxy 2.
Of course, that last level........ It took me about 60 tries. I like that they give you that one star bit right at the very beginning of the level to indicate how many times you had to retry.

Ha ha, second time I've been asked this. Yes it's not really a 'finishable' game as such but if I recall I got all the achievements and completed all given objectives 2 or 3 times over.

That's still pretty impressive. There are a couple of those achievements, like reaching 5,000m and getting the Profit Bird twice in one run, that are very difficult.ratsoalbion wrote:Ha ha, second time I've been asked this. Re: Games completed 2013
Ok I've just checked back and it says I only have 24 of 36 achievements. I don't want to appear a fraud! ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)
Some of these I don't remember though, were they added more recently I wonder..?
Either way, no need to be impressed by the looks of things - I guess I just felt like I'd done everything I wanted to.

Re: Games completed 2013

Not just a great Splinter Cell game, nor simply an excellent stealth game, I thoroughly enjoyed Blacklist and will be mightily surprised if it isn't amongst my fondest gaming memories of 2013. I'd love to tell fans of Conviction that the action-focussed stealth gameplay is intact, but I have no idea; I gleefully took the opportunity to ignore Assault and Panther in favour of the Ghost mission parameters. I'll go into more detail in the review, but I cannot recommend this game highly enough to fans of the early Splinter Cell games.
Running total = 64
The running total includes all playthroughs (NG+, alternative difficulties, alternative endings, co-op, etc.), but the list is spared them to keep it shorter.

Super Mario Bros 3 (NES/Wii) First time I've ever taken a serious run at this game, having played bits and pieces for 2 and a bit decades. FTL- Thanks to mister Ashguyver I've been obsessively playing FTL mainly because it's really fun however I am aperently really bad at it because even after dumping over 10 hours on the game I havent been able to even get to the boss and have only unlocked 1 ship, well that was the case up until now but today I finnaly got to my destination and to finnaly deliver some important intel to the federation or something, the crew of the Bebop had suffered a lot to get here but finnaly it was over or was it!?
Aparently its not enough for a small poorly armed ship to cross the hostile galaxy alone and deliver a vital piece of intel to change the war,no no we're supposed to fight the rebel fleet too because that's fair, but ok I was given 5 turns to prepare so I went around farming in nearby systems to get myself ready. I was right next to the federation base ready for battle and the flagship was just a jump away I went ahead and jumped to the base to meet the rebel flagship at the federation base and finnaly end this war and the mission, but then I get a message that the flagship was too near the federation base and the rebels had won game fucking over! Aparently I was supposed to fight the fleet alone because the federation couldnt be bothered to lift a finger even when facing certain destruction and they just surrendered so you know what screw those guys the universe is better of with the rebels at least they have initiative!
PS:The crew of the Bebop now roams the emptyness of space taking odd jobs where they can get it with the only original member left(ironically enough) being Spike, but im sure he'll have much fun hunting bounty's with his two rock friends and the crazy slugman they found on a rock.

Brilliant. Excellent characters, terrific pacing, and on medium difficulty perfectly pitched. I can't think of a single flaw. Although it's not my favourite game I've ever played, I think it may well be technically the most perfect. I was totally engrossed from the opening scenes to the credits rolling.

A really nice old school 3D platformer with some clever design decisions within it even now. The controls are a bit of a pain and the deadzone in the PS3 sticks can cause a pain at points but it is honestly a great 10 hours entertainment.
Guacamelee
Mostly platformer and part metroidvania it is a nice way to spend 5 or 6 hours. I am not sure if I ever thought it was truly excellent but I did enjoy the time I spent with it and as a game to spend an hour or so at a time on it really works.

Like Leon I have gotten to the point of seeing the credits and getting through the 8-bit music remixes and that is enough, especially having finished origins a couple of years ago. Charming and bright it really is a fantastic little platformer and when you get in the flow it has a very good rythem to it.
