Jan 17th - The Legend Of Zelda: A Link to the past
Feb 2nd - Gunman Clive
Feb 15th - Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Mar 8th - Lara Croft Go: Cave of fire adventure

Nice, severely testing bit of DLC for this great mobile game. Really took me some serious brain power to get past the last 3 or 4 levels. Some ingenious manipulation of columns and boulders needed to kill enemies, force them onto switches to aid your progress and create temporary platforms.

Really love this game; hope there'll be some more soon but I've already had my moneys worth several times over. Great to hear the beautiful score again too.

Mar - Metal Gear (Vita)
Mar - Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (Vita)

I'm continuing my play-through of the Metal Gear series and like the first MSX Metal Gear, I enjoyed this quite a bit! My only experience with 8-bit games is the NES, so I think that the graphics on Metal Gear 2 are amazingly good. It does a good job improving on the Metal Gear foundation and the ability to crawl and hide adds a new strategic layer. The boss fights are also more fun and while I found the final boss to be a little frustrating, the overall idea of how to beat him was so cool that I ended up enjoying it. My biggest complaint was the huge amount of backtracking you have to do at the end of the game. I thought it really hurt its narrative momentum. I'm really glad I went the Cane and Rinse route and started with the MSX games, but I'm excited to finally be getting to Metal Gear Solid.

Jan 1: Fallout 4
Jan 12: Doom 3: BFG Edition (Veteran)
Jan 16: Doom 3: Ressurection of Evil (Marine)
Jan 17: Doom 3: The Lost Missions
Jan 26: Rise of the Tomb Raider: The witch DLC thing Baba Yaga
Jan 31: Rainbow Six Siege (All operators unlocked)

Feb 12: Monument Valley
Feb 13: Unravel
Feb 13: Until Dawn
Feb 27: Superhot

March 15: The Division (Level 30, all story missions done, 100% base upgrades)

The Division is okay. It's got a solid shooting mechanic which is held back by repetitive gameplay in almost every aspect. I've hit 30 and done every story mission and upgrade my base to 100%. I don't feel the urge to push on to "the real game" as the things the game asks you to do are very mundane.

I'll check out some more Dark Zone but when your friends list is fractured due to levels, I've come to the realisation that maybe co-op rpgs aren't for me anymore. They require too much from me in terms of getting together with people constantly to make the game more enjoyable.

My god that was fucking brilliant. My favourite Telltale series so far. Will save comments for the podcast thread, but I enjoyed it from start to finished. Absolutely perfectly paced, brilliant character progression and utterly compelling story. Almost perfection, save for a few technical issues. My favourite game I've completed so far this year.
Finished this the other day myself - thought it was excellent, very engaging with some good twists. The technical issues almost marred it for me, particularly with a scene in Episode 5, load times were also poor but I expected this from a Telltale game (already known for poor engines) being ported to Vita.

Yeah there was a fair bit of stuttering but nothing that really spoiled it too bad. Glad you enjoyed it too, I've not seen too much from people who really liked it. I suspect it helped that I'm half way through the entire book series so have a good lot of time invested in to these characters already. Can't wait for Season 2.

Praise be to IO Interactive! It's no secret that I was not a fan of Hitman: Absolution, but Sniper Challenge and Sniper (plus, to a much lesser extent, Hitman GO) gave me cautious optimism that there was potential for another Hitman game to rival the calibre of Blood Money or Silent Assassin. Obviously, this is only the first part of a multi-section game, but it proved my optimism well founded, and more besides. There've been complaints about how the game is being delivered and technical/server issues since launch, none of these are without merit, but I've enjoyed being back in Agent 47's playground more than I could've hoped.

Mostly, I thought Salt And Sanctuary did a good job of sticking to its remit of being a 2D Dark Souls. It emphasises platforming and takes quite a few cues from Metroidvania-style games, which is fine, but the platforming was my largest source of frustration. It came out at the right time to scratch my perpetual Dark Souls itch before Dark Souls 3 has had the chance to do just that, and I had an undeniably good time charging about in a ninja getup with a giant pair of scissors (really!)

I've not played a military style FPS since the second Modern Warfare game came out, and (rightly) assuming this would be very short I thought it might be fun to quickly blast through it seeing as I had it free from PS+ a little while back. Well, it's fun for what it is. It's no better or worse than any of the Call Of Duty games. I actually had a lot of fun with it whilst it lasted, but quite bizarrely the best parts were two absolutely incredible driving sections. They were brilliant! In fact, I went back and repeated them both more than once before continuing with the rest of the game. I think I read EA brought the Need For Speed team on for help with them, and it absolutely shows. Outside of those bits, it was your standard shooting gallery fare really. Nothing out of the ordinary or exceptional, but for something different to what I usually play I definitely had fun with it. I must admit parts of the storytelling left me a little uneasy, I wasn't prepared for quite how overtly pro-USA it would be, but maybe all these games are like that. The actual story itself wasn't too bad though, I did genuinely feel like I wanted to know what happened to you characters by the end. Overall, surprisingly decent, although if you play these games a lot I doubt there is much new for you here (outside of those fantastic driving sections).

Lovely looking, strong playing and slightly lacking in big bosses after being spoilt by gow3. Good stuff!

Apr - Skullgirls Encore

No idea where all these updates came from (didn't realise I had a whole new game update) but playing this today I had a blast, really playable and gorgeous. Not sure what the 2nd encore offers over this but I'm half way to checking it out.

Three Metal Gear games down! Metal Gear Solid was a fun, but slightly frustrating experience for me. It really reminded me a lot of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Besides both coming out in 1998, MGS also did a great job of moving the game mechanics of a top-down 2D game into a 3D world while still preserving the original feel. I’ve often felt frustrated with people who play Ocarina of Time 10-15 years after it came out and then call it cliche or formulaic without recognizing that it helped create that formula and that playing it at the time was mind-blowing. But I’m kind of on the other side of that with Metal Gear Solid. While I can totally appreciate how great the cinematics and storytelling must have been at the time of release, it didn’t have much of an effect on me in 2016.

I really enjoyed the boss fights and thought that the members of FOXHOUND were probably the most fun and interesting part of the game. A lot of story stuff was recycled from Metal Gear 2, which I thought was kind of weird (though I guess that didn't matter to Westerners at the time since MG2 didn’t come out here). The overall stealth gameplay holds up really well and I had a lot of fun with it. That being said, the final boss was beyond frustrating and dampened my enthusiasm for the game quite a bit. Glad to have played this one, also glad to have finished it. On to Metal Gear Solid 2!

10/02 - Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition (Normal)
19/02 - Killer Is Dead: Nightmare Edition (Normal)
23/02 - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (Prince of Darkness)
25/02 - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2: Revelations (Prince of Darkness)
27/02 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
02/03 - Portal: Still Alive
08/03 - The Darkness II
25/03 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Normal Castle)

I was planning on getting 100% completion on this first castle before moving on to the inverted one, but I was pretty close to that already, so I decided to just finish this one up and get to the inverted castle anyway. So I can at least reach some sort of finishing point on this game.

Honestly, I have to say I'm not terribly impressed by this game. I don't think it's awful, and I still like it, but I don't see how it has anywhere near the reverence that it does. I was even listening to them talk about this game on the Giant Bombcast the other day and it was boggling my mind at some of the stuff they were saying about it, which I just can't see how anyone could possibly think. But enough about what other people thought of it.

As I said, I like it, but there's a lot I don't like about it too. Trying to weigh them up against each other and listing them I think there's actually more I don't like, yet I still found myself playing up to this far and not hating the overall experience, so I don't really know how to sum things up. I really like the atmosphere and art direction of the game. It looks great, has a really good soundtrack, and the feel of it is cool too. All the intricate Gothic architecture and classical monster designs are brilliant. I even actually the hokey voice acting, especially that of Alucard. I know Iga himself said that he didn't like how deep and macho his English voice sounds, but I don't think of it like that at all. It's rich and sonorous. Almost like a singer's voice. Which you would expect, since the voice actor is a musician. I do like the sense of exploration too, up to a certain point. It's cool to explore around the castle, stumbling across new and strange things, and gradually becoming more familiar with the place. Filling out the map is satisfying too.

But pretty much everything else I didn't like. Despite exploration being enjoyable in once sense, it was also a major negative in another too. A lot of it is extremely cryptic and annoying. There were many points where the solution to unlocking an area or item just felt totally unreasonable, and something that I would have never have been able to work out if I didn't look at a walkthrough or Wiki. But as I got further in to the game that feeling was lessened. Not just from getting more familiar with the castle though, but also from finding more of the solutions online. It doesn't help that the game's awful translation obscures a lot of this stuff further too. At the same time, finding items around the castle was often a wasted effort. Once you get a certain amount of money, which isn't particularly hard to get, you can buy some of the best stuff in the game from the shop, making the rewards for exploration pretty trivial.

Then there's the combat. It's terrible. Really bad. Regardless of how it's from a different time, or what mentality you have to put yourself in, it's just bad. It's really basic, with how you only have a single attack for each weapon type, with the different types not really changing much anyway. Apart from that all you have are useless one-time use items, or the needlessly complicated magic attacks. It's extremely clunky too, with how slow you attack and how rooted to the spot you are when you swing. The knockback when you get hit is ridiculous, and way too punishing for whatever mistake you made. Because most of the time it's come from something you couldn't possibly avoid, because the enemy attacks far too quickly for you to respond, or they fly around with some erratic pattern, or use some massive room-filling attack. At a certain point there were some enemies I just ignored and flew past in Mist Form most of the time. The combat isn't slow and deliberate or anything like that. Dark Souls is. Monster Hunter is. This isn't. It's just bad.

And the strange thing is that this problem can be ignored in a way, but only because of a another problem with the game. Bosses are a pain early in the game because of their huge, powerful attacks that you can barely avoid. Yet once you level up enough they become totally trivial. It doesn't matter that you don't even come close to learning attack patterns, because if you level up enough, which isn't hard to do, you can just take the boss out with a few lucky hits, or a few shots of Soul Steal. I beat Richter by being tossed around the boss arena for a few seconds, not even finding my feet, before my sword familiar just finished him off for me. The other day I beat Granfaloon by spending 90% of the fight standing on a ledge waiting for my magic to recharge, so I could fire at it in Bat Form. Really tedious.

So I really don't know what to say overall. Moment-to-moment gameplay can be quite aggravating, yet I can't bring myself to say the game is bad. I guess I like the idea of SotN more than I actually like playing it. Yet that idea is strong enough to somewhat redeem the actuality.

Sad to hear you had such a bad experience with the game, it's one of my most highly regarded for sure. Something about the combat you mentions doesn't click with me though, in my experience it's a very smooth ride once you've figured out what you can and can't fit into the combat puzzle. I find it easy (and should after multiple play throughs) to jump in, throw a down diagonal attack and double it up into a crouching attack and then throw something like a small walk or backdash in to cancel animations and demonlish the enemies, I'd never pick anything with a slow animation only opting to try the overpowered special move weapons once in a while. It's always been fun for me throwing a sub-weapon into the mix (my choice was the chalk but the line throw things have grown on me lately) and my ocd complex loves stacking up hearts to use them and to an extent adding more pull to the exploration of the game.

It does sound a bit like you've damaged your own experience with the bosses and understandably so, I did it for a few bosses way back when I first played the game but further playthroughs and less reliance on grinding really do lead to the purer version of the game. I did find it totally different but a bit too stiff with what you can do on my Richter playthrough but maybe you'd get a taste of how many options you have with Alucard if you give the Richter mode a try.

Give it a few years and then give it another shot, I know you'll like it at some point (fact :) )

The thing with the bosses is that I wasn't grinding at all. It was pretty much all just the levelling up done naturally through exploration. Didn't really go out of my for anything. I wasn't using slow weapons either. Mostly only using the standard one-handed sword weapons. Daggers had too short a range and were too weak, and two-handed swords took way too long to swing, or had a really unhelpful lunging animation.
