I have always thought Sonic 1 on the Master System was the best Sonic game, although I'm really not a fan of the series in general.

That’s really interesting man :) .

Like I said, I’m looking forward to going back to them, as my memories of them are when I first played them all those years ago when they first came out and I was in single figure years.

Having grown up with a Master System (and envying the NES and the much more powerful Megadrive), the Sonic series is something I kinda just put up with. I had played Super Mario Bros with the one friend in school who even own a NES, so I knew even then, that there were better games. That's not to say that Sonic games were bad, just that they were, you know, good. Not great, just good. Green Hill zone = great... don't really have strong feeling for subsequent levels.

And I think I just accepted that the Master System versions/ports were always going to be inferior versions, at least at a very superficial glance. And as a kid, superficial glances were just what you did. At one or maybe two games bought by my parents per year, I was kinda just grateful.

But yeah, Sonic is alright, especially around that era. No Mario though...

So far, what I like about SMS Sonic 2 is that it sticks more closely to Sonic 1 on Mega Drive, which is by far the best and most pure Sonic game there is for me (the more they started adding to that series, the messier the games became), but the level design... my gawwwd. So many blind spots and leaps of faith! This adherence to speed is the whole series' biggest enemy, it seems to me.

I really liked the jungle zone levels on SMS Sonic 1, which I don't think were in any other version.

I loved the Master System version of Sonic 1. The music in the Jungle levels too!

The London Gaming Market was Sunday just gone, which I made an effort to get down to again.

A few of us went this time and left the girls at home with the hope that we could spend as much time pondering and looking about items that take our fancy.

Overall, I didn’t find it as interesting this time, a lot of the stalls had large stocks of many games but there were less specialist stalls this time around and one that particularly took my fancy last time was a Japanese stall that had lots of Metal Gear and Resident evil items – wasn’t there, shame.

There was however a particular stall that had a lot of high value games, rare ones and ones that people generally don’t want to get rid of so become expensive to pick up. Castlevania SotN was there on PS1 for a cool £250 !!

He had a lot of the big GameCube games too, Frogger and Gadget racers were there for £175 & £200 respectively. Wow, big prices, for games I don’t care for – pretty demoralising, I have to admit.

I did pick up Chibi Robo through, which I’ve been after for a while, for a very fair price of £80, it’s in wonderful condition too and still has the unscratched Club Nintendo reward card, lol. I’m looking forward to playing that.

This year they had opened up an extra room, which while very welcome seemed a bit futile, as the place was rammed again – they really do need a bigger venue, or just open up the partition to the extra areas, it would be so much more pleasant.

I grabbed a few other bits that I’ve been wanting for a while and a few nice books to go into my library. All in all, was good, not as good as the last one but fruitful none the less – I got battered drunk after it too in the pub next-door.

Speed Devils Dreamcast

I loved this game back in the original day on my Dreamcast, it seemed so much fun finding the shortcuts and seeing the levels change as the race developed. I don’t know what happened to my original copy, so I’m glad to pick this up again and as soon as RGC finish their RGB Scart cable for use on my PVM, I’ll grab one and jump back into this game.

GameCube – Chibi-Robo & Timesplitters Future Perfect

These are games that I need for my collection and ones that I wanted to play. Chibi commands quite a price nowadays and is often hard to track down, in a complete form, so this was a very pleasant surprise, it was also one of the specific games I was actually hoping to find on this trip. Timesplitters, I’m a big fan of but for some reason I never finished the third entry in the series, I also originally played these on the PS2 back in the day, so as long as I can get over the GC’s dual analogue sub-par controls, I’ll finish it this time !

Image

GameCube Controller Emerald Blue

Last time it went to the LGM I picked up a Spiced Orange Controller and while I do like my WaveBird, I generally prefer the wired pads as the include rumble, so I use these. Now I have a Japan exclusive variant and was tempted by the Pearl one I saw there too but maybe I’ll pick that one up next time.

Mario Artist N64DD

Now, this is simply just a collector’s piece, to sit on my shelf with a few other regionally locked Nintendo curios, as I have no way to play this on original hardware. This was going to be the sequel to Mario Paint, but never actually got the exposure that it was destined as the N64DD was pulled from shelves rather swiftly in the states and Japan soon followed, never actually reaching our UK shops. It’s just nice to look at and paw over – if you like this sort of thing.

So overall nothing too major, although I tried to set out to get a few items and managed to come away with one of them so I'm a happy fat Koopling.

The venue is the thing that mainly puts me off going to that. There’s just not enough room to properly browse the stalls. You’re always having to squeeze in between people, and often queue just to get near enough to see what someone has for sale.

Even the really crowded comic cons like the MCM know to keep the stalls a decent distance apart so people can actually move around the venue.

Good stuff, Suits! Future Perfect might just be my favourite Time Splitters game. The campaign craps all over the others, in any case!

I had Chibi-Robo as well, having received it for reviewing purposes, but I got really bored with it halfway through and sold it off, back when I still sold off games. :)

Symphony of the night for 250 pounds! I might dig out my copy and sell that to go toward my inevitable switch purchase! I meant to go to the market but I’m broke so would not have been wise. Maybe next time!

Cheers guys.

The queues were big this time, bigger I think than last time. The pre-11AM entry queue was out of the lobby, through the car park and onto the main road !!

Yeah man, the one stall that had the 'Good Stuff' so to speak, had two very nice copies of SotN on PS1, both for £260.

By the time I came back around for my second sweep, he'd sold them both.

I'm currently in conversation with him about a few of his other wears actually....

Ok can somebody answer me this? Do the backwards compatible original XBOX games like Ninja Gaiden look better on the XBOX One, or do they only look significantly better when playing on XBOX One X?

In the Netherlands, we celebrate the king's birthday every 27th of April with national festivities and traditional flea markets where everyone just sells their old junk in the street.

Games wise around my way, you just find a lot of licensed shovelware from older consoles, but I managed to nab a copy of Red Dead Revolver for PS2 and Project Gotham Racing 2, for little to no money.

To give myself a bit of a break from what is the incredible God of War, I went and paid my friend Ally a visit today in his retro game shop in Leigh-on-Sea and picked up a few Master System games that I've been hungering for for a while now.

The two Sonic's were a must as these were games that I rented when I was a little one. Psycho Fox was a game that I could remember vaguely but couldn't place, until I saw the box art on a Twitter post and instantly put my memories to a title.

My set-up for these and Master System games in general is tricky, as I use a PVM for my retro consoles, which uses BNC connections for picture. Red, Green, Blue & Sync connectors. Now, I don't have the necessary cable for a Master System that splits the video signal into RGB - thus, I can't play my Master System console.

I do however, have the cables for my Mega Drive, so I picked myself up a Master System Convertor about 6 months ago with this in mind, so the fuits of my labour paid off and now I can play my Master System games in beautiful RGB. I also switched out my 6-button Mega Drive pad for my Master System one, it just feels better for these games I think.

It looks good. Very good. (Apart from the bloody, silly PAL boarders !!)

Yes, thats a Master System cart there.

I played a good bit of Psycho Fox easier and enjoyed going back to that, it kinda reminds me of Decap-Attack, which is cool. It also has some really odd momentum to the characters but has some cook ideas with the different animals and the pick ups you can get - decent game for its time I feel.

Sonic is great, much better than I remember, harder than it's 16BIT brother but still rewarding.

Sonic 2 I've not tried yet, although I'm dreading that stinking glider again and the mine level. I'll come to that once I've beaten the first one - to which I got quiet far into on my first attempt a moment ago.

Having gone back to this and so far, just now, got to the Robotnic fight in the Labyrinth Zone, I can say that this time round it feels much better than what I remembered.

Certain elements of the game from all those ago came flooding back to me when I saw them again, in particular Jungle Zone. Which tests your platforming skills on the waterfall climb section and the vine battle with Robotnic was most definitely a part of the game I dreaded - I actually don't think I very often got past that part.

The controls, feel better than they should on a Master System and the fact that you can go backwards in the levels needs to be acknowledged, as there's not too many examples of this sort of technical feature on this platform (Psycho Fox for one) this Sonic game feels much less about the speed and more about the platforming - which is great I think, all things taken into consideration.

Good stuff, man. Interesting to read. I quite like Psycho Fox and indeed it's part of the Decap Attack / Magical Flying Turbo Hat (or summink) lineage. I'd love to get your impressions on SMS Sonic 2. It's kind of love/hate for me.

Boom, nailed it !!

Managed it on my second attempt, not that I'm l33t or anything, it's a fairly simple game but still gratifying to beat.

Only found 3 Chaos Emeralds though.

Onto Sonic 2 now then.....

Ah, that would make sense. I've not looked into is roots or anything, perhaps I will.

Nice one dude :) .
