Whatcha Been Playing?
Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
It expects you to lose that fight and just dash for the chopper. There’s an achievement for not doing so, but it’s assumed you won’t.
I’m pretty torn on it, as I said over on the game completed thread the other day.
I’m also working through my ps+ backlog, and I bounced off Furi pretty damn hard last night. That is a million miles away from the kind of thing I enjoy.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I really enjoyed the first three fights in Furi, then it just got stupid, even on easy. Yeah, can't see me ever finishing that one!
Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Both Torment and Baldur’s Gate are specifically based on the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edison, revision 2 pen and paper game. (Sometimes called version 3.5).
Essentially what they mean is that the character stats, skills, combat rules etc... are a direct implementation of the rules of the tabletop game. You just don’t see the dice rolling.
(They’re also both set in worlds that were created for the tabletop game, there are rulebooks out there that already explored these places, characters and locations before the games did)

I'm no expert but I believe this is a tricky area - perhaps it even surpasses the evergreen question, "What is an RPG?" in its trickiness.ThirdMan wrote: ↑May 9th, 2018, 10:02 pm 2. I've fallen in love with using a keyboard and mouse, so it's about time I tried a real-time strategy game. It's a genre that's always piqued my interest but it just never happened for me on console. I'd like to try one of the classic titles (i.e. cheap and low-spec ) to pass the time on my daily commute. What do you recommend, bearing in mind that my Macbook Pro isn't up to much. I see that Starcraft is now free, and then there's Warcraft 3. Would they be good places to start or should I aim for something more modern?
There's been a massive amount of hybridisation in the RTS area over the last twenty years, so you have a very diverse and sometimes technical landscape - the 'purer' experiences like Starcraft, and then hybrid Real Time + Turn Based like the Total War games, to the city builders dungeon keepers and economy managers etc.
The free Starcraft would be a good place to start and to see if it does anything for you. I would not recommend buying things willy-nilly in this genre, Thirdman. Rome Total War seems to be the cheapest of the older Total Wars; I believe Medieval II Total War is the better game but it's also very expensive. Both of these have multiple award winning* mods which enhance their appeal. If your laptop can run a more recent TW game, Shogun 2 is pretty good. Anything Command and Conquer would probably be decent, and Company of Heroes (2006) is supposed to be awesome. Finally, I found Sins of a Solar Empire really accessible, but it's got expansions and re-releases now that might not suit your PC. SoaSE: Trinity is the original from 2011 if you can source it cheap.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
So, I just started Tales of Symphonia. It's my first Tales game, though I think I almost played it back on the Gamecube. Back then, if a JRPG wasn't akin to Final Fantasy, I wasn't interested by default. Now, I get excited for new series.
Should I mention I'm playing the PC version? Does that matter at all?

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Tales of Symphonia was great, I also played it on the Gamecube back in the day. I thought the real time battles were really exciting compared to most turn based JRPGs. I don't think I ever finished it, but it was gorgeous to look at.

I've been playing an hour or so of Steins:Gate every night before sleep. It's good, just put it on auto mode and it's basically a really long film! Not much to do, the occasional button press. The story hasn't really got going properly yet, but it's showing potential.

It’s good although I wish there was more interactivity. The follow up has even less which makes it seem more of a slog. I’ve been playing it for almost a year and not finished it yetAlex79uk wrote: ↑May 11th, 2018, 6:59 am I've been playing an hour or so of Steins:Gate every night before sleep. Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I managed to beat one version of Furi, but there's an alternate path you're able to take that presents a different final challenge. unfortunately, it's much different from the rest of the game, feel-wise, and is just a lot less fun to play. never got around to beating that one.
Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I think only the pure terror of taking it on as my first official review got me through to the end, even on Easy. I still kinda love it even though it punishes you so hard.

Just started hellblade with my super duper new headset. Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything this audibly intense.
Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Just started Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Engaging so far but it'll be hard pressed to push the emotional buttons that 4 did. Still I really liked Nadine in the main game and Chloe is always enjoyable. She's the best driver in the biz you know?

It’s defintely a ‘raising the bar’ moment for game audio.Simonsloth wrote: ↑May 11th, 2018, 11:35 pm Just started hellblade with my super duper new headset. Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything this audibly intense.
Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
You guys are crazy. Thankfully it gets much better after that first hour.
I think I've come across the Worst Mechanic in a Videogame*. I'm playing Divinity Original Sin on the PS4 - I played it on PC way back but didn't get very far. Instead of a speech skill check, the game launches into a game of Rock Paper Scissors every time you make a request of someone. So, at least in the early game, it is completely random. You have to play several games, and move a meter towards a win state. I think if you have extra points in Charisma, more pips move on your side than on your opponent's side (eg three pips when you win a game, two pips for your opponent), but you still have to win three or more games to pass the check.
So what's happened is I have lost all these checks so far. It's absolutely fucking infuriating, as it then locks you out of all conversation options with that character. What am I supposed to do now, kill everybody?
*I did look up "worst mechanics in videogames". The one that made me laugh was, "NPCs you must follow who walk at a different speed to you".

That’s so infuriating although I think NPCs that stop when you are slightly too far ahead of them is up there with my personal bugbears
Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
The worst mechanic in gaming for me is the shovel bounce from Shovel Knight. It feels absolutely foul and is so hard to pull off consistently. It should be mapped to a button rather than holding down on the d-pad in mid-air. When I get round to writing my Shovel Knight feedback, 99% will be about how gross that mechanic feels.
