Just finished playing Balan Wonderworld and found it to be a really fun, creative game with some delightfully off-kilter design ideas. It's been repeated ad nauseum but it does feel in many ways like a lost 6th gen era platformer and if you have any love for those games, you might be surprised by how much there is to enjoy here. I have some extended thoughts on the game and its oddly hostile reception in a review over at Buttoncult for anyone that's interested.
https://www.buttoncult.com/home/review- ... onderworld
Ah I read that the other day and thought it was a great review, never put 2 and 2 together and realised it was you who'd written it though!
Haha, cheers man. I've had a lot of love from the positivity starved Balan community for that one!

Thanks for reading the article everyone. Another thing to bring up is that even though these genre of games might not change much from one to the next, I’d argue that they deserve just as much praise as other genres because I’d say designing a perfectly balanced handling model is just as much a skill and vital to a game as getting the feel right in a platformer or FPS for example. Or designing a track which is fun to race along with great AI drivers is just as much a skill as designing a well balanced map or fun level in a shooter.

Great read that Kurt. I like the sound of the "Bond moments", makes me excited to see what IO are going to do with this franchise.

You've got a good writing style, enjoyed that. FYI: Borderlands vehicles control the same as the Warthogs too. I remember quite enjoying how they controlled to be honest, skidding round everywhere and flinging it round corners, but I can see why it might frustrate. It always felt a bit like controlling a remote control car to me.

I can see that comparison, explains why I was bad at controlling RC cars too

For the last couple of weeks, I've been part of a Dungeons and Dragons livestreamed game which is proving to be a lot of fun.
It runs every Tuesday from 2000 BST and can be found here:
twitch.tv/pennydragongames
Considering that the group came together solely for this as part of Penny Dragons final push on their Kickstarter, we seem to be clicking into place pretty well. Tonight we need to finish a dungeon crawl, find the kidnapped family and perhaps reach level 3 ...
Feel free to pop by!
[Other than being a backer, I have no direct involvement with the people at Penny Dragon]

I'm about a week into my fourth year of writing posts about video game music. If you filled out the survey I posted her last month, you'll probably see your answer written about if I haven't already. It's no Sound of Play, but any port in a storm, right?

Enjoyed reading through those! I do have the complete opposite opinion on Rob (not Ron - he’s the sci-fi guy) Hubbard’s Commando theme though - my favourite game music ever! I did go into why here:

Bit amateur compared to what you’re doing, but I had a really good time over a few months working on my top 25 gaming tunes then covered them here and in a previous post.
