Whatcha Been Listening To?
Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Really loving Soccer Mommy - Color Theory at the moment. Circle The Drain is the March summer jam I never knew I needed.
Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
That's cool, the music sounds very The Cure to me.

Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Run the Jewels put up the first two songs from the upcoming RTJ4 for listen and download in all the usual places, and both are fantastic. El-P is trying some different things with the production although it's still hard-hitting, and on Ooh La La he gets boombap legend DJ Premier involved as well.
Mike and El both sound really fired up on both of these, lyrics and delivery at master level. If this is representative then this record is definitely going to hit my expectations for one of my favourite artists.

I had a grumpy lockdown day yesterday and found this on YouTube and it put a massive smile on my face:
Its not for everyone granted but being a dance head I loved hearing some of the classics mixed in here, good ol' Fatboy

And excellent for writing to.

Fell in love with R.A.P. Ferreira's Purple Moonlight Pages recently! Very Talib Kweli.
Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Currently sitting an exam and put chill out piano random playlist on Spotify and this came on. It's really nice, and it sounds like something straight out of a Final Fantasy game!

Porcupine Tree live recordings.
Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Stumbled across this band randomly on Spotify the other day. They've not had many listens, but they're brilliant if you like old goth/Nick Cave/Bauhaus.
Seem to be Australian from around 2011. Check it out, if you are in to any of that stuff...

It's October, so that means I'm almost exclusively listening to my Halloween playlist. It's about five CDs long, but I've put the whole playlist on Youtube. Lots of video game remixes in it as well.

Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Been listening to a lot of Zappa lately. I just got The Mothers 1970 set that came out this year, and I went to see the Zappa documentary by Alex Winter (of Bill and Ted fame).
Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Interesting - I tried again recently, for about the tenth time, to 'get in to' Zappa, but there's so much material, and so much diversity, that it's impossible to know where to start.ThirdDrawing wrote: ↑December 7th, 2020, 11:34 am Been listening to a lot of Zappa lately. Any hot recommendations?

Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
Hmm......
You're right and recommending Zappa is hard because there is so much - and it depends on your tastes.
If I wanted to recommend a general guide to start with though, I'd include (and this is basically chronological):
Freak Out - His first album, and most of it is pretty accessible
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDE9MC3 ... B88DC87EB6
Hot Rats - his first solo album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOCgzhU ... 7UW7N4B5k7
Carnegie Hall - My personal favourite era of Zappa, this is four discs (!) and a good overview of a live show from this era.
Disc 1 features the opening band, so some of it is not Zappa - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5EwqZ4_mTU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC-Aib8G9Y4 - Disc 2, couldn't find Discs 3 or 4, sorry.
Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation - Probably his two most famous albums. Very rocky, but jazz tinged. Accessible and very good.
Apostrophe complete - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shq0Poq ... n4eHunIGxr
Overnite Sensation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjBDKELNN3U
Joe's Garage - One of his most famous albums, and also a concept album. It's about a dystopian society in which music itself has been criminalised.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBmaByzmLKQ
You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore - 1-6 - Six live collections that are a hodge podge of live songs mixed together from every era of his career, except for Volume 2, which is a live show from 1974 and very good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8oMPUTL4F4 (Here's Volume 1)
Between 1972-1974 he did a lot of stuff that was considered "jazz/jazz fusion", partly because he got thrown off the stage by a fan and broke his leg, so he could only compose for about 8 months.
I wanted to throw in an example of the kind of stuff he did in that period, because I think it's amazing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr6mTloYJJs (Live from Sweden)
He also has instrumental orchestal albums but from what I know about them, they're a bit of a tough listen and I'm not as familiar with them.
Here's the London Symphony Orchestra stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4MU_7U84fw
I hope that helps as a general overview.

Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
I got the new Gorillaz album for Christmas, Song Machine Vol. 1.
So far, it feels a bit in-between their full albums and those side ones that come out, like the Fall or the Now Now. I'm digging that Elton John track, for sure.
Anyway, I've never ranked their albums before. So, here I go.
Demon Dayz (Also in my top 5 albums)
Humanz
Gorillaz
Plastic Beach (switch Gorillaz and Plastic Beach depending on my mood/day)
Sound Machine
The Now Now
The Fall

Re: Whatcha Been Listening To?
I spent most of my driving time yesterday listening to Children Of Bodom, after the sad, untimely death of frontman Alexi Laiho at the age of 41
Saw this band a couple of times and they were great live. Once supporting Slayer, and the second time at their own show where they had a full car on stage for no reason whatsoever other than Alexi to climb on and leap off from time to time
I discovered this band around the time they released their third album, and at the time I was looking for something faster and heavier than what I was listening to at the time, and Bodom delivered! This video taken from their legendary Tokyo live album, Tokyo Warhearts.
When I used to manage children's nurseries, I used to do wake up dances with the kids. I'd choose a few songs and so would they, and Bodom often got picked both by me, and the children. It was brilliant actually, by the time we'd been doing it a while the kids would be asking for everything from Pantera to Bob Dylan to Pink Floyd to Motley Crue..!
RIP Alexi. Much too young.
"GOOD EVENING TOKYO... WE'RE CHILDREN OF BODOM AND WE COME FROM FUCKING FINLAND...!"

KING HARVEST Dancing in the Moonlight
That’s crazy. I’d never heard this song until about a month ago during a road trip. Had probably been through 100 songs by that point and it was the only one where I spoke up to ask what it was since I liked it so)

Ha, always knew that as a Toploader song, never realised it was a cover!paulag wrote: ↑February 3rd, 2021, 9:03 pm KING HARVEST Dancing in the Moonlight

On a huge Replacements binge at the moment.
Let It Be has been one of my favourite albums for a long time (with Pleased to Meet Me and Tim not far behind) and I'll listen to anything Westerberg has a hand in.
Shockingly I've never looked at their earlier stuff such as Let It Be was my first listen. I'm listening to Sorry Ma and Hootenanny now and I'm kicking myself for missing out on these for so long!
Colour Me Impressed in particular is a stone cold classic and I'm struggling to get it off repeat.
