Started Metro 2033 Redux last night. Was expecting a lot more action straight out of the gate, but it seems like it might be a more thoughtful game than that. Action happens as scenes, most of the the time it's best not to fight and I've spent more time just touring survivalist towns. Interesting so far and the music has some cool personality

Metro is a way more tatical shooter then its counterparts, playing the first game on the highest difficulty really is a case of every bullet counts, with both you and your opponents dying pretty quickly.

Vampyr, I can't put it better than Scrustle did above.

It is very wordy but I'm enjoying it a lot.

I like to give every free game on PS+ a fair crack, but after the first scene (where you vaguely interact with some terrible controls) in Beyond: Two Souls, I had to delete it as fast as possible. What an awful game!
:(
I would suggest there is some subconscious prejudice at play here for you to abandon it so quickly! I bet if you'd downloaded it on your old last-year's internet, you would have stuck with it past the opening scene :D
[/quote]

Ha ha. You are so right! I’d have stuck with it until I had a Platinum. Having more than 1MB/s has gone right to my head!

I recently download the ACA Neo Geo version of Sengoku 3 on the PS4. The only other version I have of this was included on the 161-in-1 MVS multicart, and it really was a game that slipped through the gaps. Being a belt-scroller in released in 2001 for the aging Neo Geo system, while SNK were going bankrupt, didn't exactly help either!

This is easily the best game in the series, with big, beautiful sprite-based artwork, and a decent moveset, compete with combos. Oh, and a dash. Love a belt-scroller with a dash move!

I should make a small disclaimer: if I can play a game on my PS3 or PS4 with my Street Fighter 5 Mad Catz fightstick, I will. I haven't played this with a regular controller, though I'm sure it'd be fine. But why have hamburger when you can have steak?

So, yeah, if you like your belt-scrollers, it's a good one to pick up. You can skip the first two in the series - you're not going to miss anything.

Sounds like another one to add to my ACA NEOGEO collection.
Thanks Joshi!

It's absolutely fantastic, and also available on Switch. My favourite brawler by far.

Started playing into the Breach, its a tatics roguelike I guess you could say, similar to FTL which makes sense since its by the same people. So far I dont know how to feel about it, I like the game's focus on positioning and making the best of limited resources but at the same time it feels too limiting, I mean you're are stuck with only 3 units and you have to pick a particular team and you cant mix and match so yeah I dunno yet, also I heard that Chris Avellone wrote for the game and well that's pretty meaningless the game is pretty barren in terms of story and world building even more so then FTL.

Will keep playing but I dont see myself falling in love with it as so many people have.

Just started Max Payne 2. Talk about a graphical upgrade! This series is so cool, glad I've finally tried it out. Even 15 years later, it's still impressing newbies like me.

Enjoying Vampyr a lot, though there was a very taxing mid-game boss fight that nearly derailed the whole thing.

The combat has been compared to Bloodborne, apparently. I wouldn't go that far, but there does seem to be a range of abilities that could lead to interesting fighting styles. I lack imagination and am a ham-fisted oaf, so I generally never go for the more interesting/esoteric abilities in games. I generally stick to STR/DEX type stuff and pumping passive abilities.

The plot is excellent, with lots of subtext. If they really mean all the implications and modern-day applications of the stuff they are discussing, then I am very impressed. I have just joined what is essentially the Conservative Party in-game.
Spoiler: show
It may not be a shock to realise that they are an ancient order of vampires :)

Playing God of War or more accurately, finishing God of War.

I am so mixed on this game, I like the story it's telling, I like the setting, I like the combat for the first few enounters with the axe...
Spoiler: show
and later with the blades which give some much needed consistent AOE damage
...but certain backtracking gets repetitive and certain encounters tiresome. Also, I'm not sure that the gear system really adds to the experience and I'm not a fan of the skills tree being gated by gear level.

Playing alot of PUBG whilst streaming.. In my own time I have gone full balls deep into Minecraft again. I think the urge to build things (Thanks Fallout 76 reveal!) overtook my common sense.

I am also making a concerted effort to try out smaller titles wherever possible. Been playing two blinders recently. Swords of Ditto, which is akin to a roguelike old school Zeldaesque adventure title with an inventive main mechanic and charming game play. Speaking of charming if you have to play one indie game this year, play a wonderful title by the name of 'Minit'. Short, sweet, clever, engrossing and holy crap biscuits that soundtrack! I am not ashamed to admit that I have played it so often that I can speedrun it in around 10 minutes. Available on pretty much every platform and well worth its circa £7.00 price tag.

I've been playing Assault Android Cactus after picking it up in the recent sale on PSN. Cute design, energetic presentation, and very satisfying core gameplay loop. It's like an easily accessible, slightly less readable and precise version of Nex Machina. Loving it so far.

I think I initially jotted it down the list after being sold by someone's enthusiasm on here (Flabyo, maybe?). Anyway, thanks for the recommendation!

I have been digging into the 60 in 1 JAMMA game board (vertical/tate). I did manage to pick up a copy for under $50 AUD, so the price does vary widely, depending on who is selling it.

The quality of the emulation does vary, and I won't go into too much detail with that - there's plenty of forums out there that will break it down much better than I could.

In terms of value for money, if you already have a cabinet/JAMMA setup, it's pretty decent - it's plug and play, super easy to setup, and games like Donkey Kong and Ms Pacman play really well, even if all 60 games don't quite hit the mark. It's certainly cheaper than tracking down original boards, which cost quite the pretty penny.

However, if you don't already have that cabinet/JAMMA setup, and most people don't... much less so. There's VGA output, but you still need to provide power to the board, which a JAMMA harness does, and it's pretty much the only way. Plus, I've seen some pretty sweet Raspberry Pi setups, which give you so much more freedom. You can procure better quality roms and emulators, and putting aside the legal issues of that (and there are legal issues) you can save a lot more money.

I thought I'd share these thoughts because I'm sure some people have seen these multi-boards, and are probably curious. Fortunately there's plenty of legal avenues for playing older titles (just downloaded the Arcade Archives version of Donkey Kong on my Switch... love it), but not everyone has the money, and emulation is one way for people to access content that they probably wouldn't otherwise be able to.

With the recent release of Hollow Knight on Switch I'm back on that gem. The Switch port is fantastic and I love playing it on the porch when it's nice out or in bed. It's actually the first Switch game that I've regularly been using undocked. Also playing Gravity Rush 2 but I'm having a hard time getting into that one. It's fun to just mess around flying and free falling but when I have to fight it's boring or tedious...but...the free 2B dlc costume has damn near inspired me to start a new game of Nier Automata. Most likely going to happen. Damn that was a masterpiece.

I'm just not settling with Hollow Knight for some reason, although I've only played a few hours so far.

Dipped my toe back into Fallout 4 as it goes, I never did finish that game, so I'm picking it back up just under 90 hours in and level 35.

I bought the season pass it seems, so I'm looking at the DLC, rather enjoying it to be honest.

This week, I have been mostly playing:

Ikaruga

What a game. OK, OK, I know I'm backtracking on previous comments. I've basically cut all other shmups out of my diet (even my beloved DaiOuJou) and I'm approaching it more on its own terms, more than I ever have before. It basically stands alone in the genre. The polarity system is one of the most profound genre-defying mechanics I can think of. It's like making a 2D 1v1 fighter where the aim is...actually, I can't think of an equivalent at all. It's also very much more of a puzzler than anything else, as has been suggested millions of times, but not just in terms of avoiding damage and so on but in choosing exactly which shots to take and which to leave. It's not by coincidence that any time I convince to shoot a little less, my high score creeps a little higher. It's a process of unlearning every I know about shmups. I would still say I prefer herding bullets and finding routes through the billowing danmaku swathes of Dodonpachi and Ketsui but having approached it from the right perspective, I can see that Ikaruga is a slice of singular genius. Maybe one day I will even be less shite at it, too.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus

Aside from my semi-regular jaunts to Arcade Club in Bury, I haven't really played or paid any attention to Pac-Man since about 1984. I recently had a go on a four-player 'battle mode' version with a few mates and a few beers on the top floor of Arcade Club and it was one of the most fun things we placed that day. I thought it was pretty limited, though, and would never have given this a thought, really. Multiplayer only, once every couple of months. That'd do me. I saw it for bugger all on the US eShop and went for it, for reasons unknown. I must have heard some good impressions somewhere. Most significantly, I'd just had a couple of beers with the football and had itchy trigger fingers. Well done, tipsy me. What a superb game. It looks and sounds superb, the soundtrack is chock full of bangers, in fact. It plays even better, fast, chaotic, exciting, nerve-shredding and very satisfying every time you beat the clock. Throw in a brilliant two-player mode which is worth the price of admission alone and I've got one of my favourite games of the past few months - and it's up against some brilliant competition.

I enjoyed the Far Harbor DLC significantly more than the base game. It has a very campy vibe. Think B-movie creature horror. Some of the more interesting enemies and a decent story. Even the promotional art and trailers had the b-movie tone which is actually what brought me back to the game. My only issue: There are even more of the beached, mutated dolphin corpses. You know the ones scattered all over the commonwealth near bodies of water. I thought this area being somewhat ocean themed meant we'd finally get some answers about them. What burst through their stomach? Why are they all dead? Can you be attacked by one if you swim in the ocean? Like many of the cane and rinse crew I am terrified of carnivorous creatures lurking below the waters surface yet...I have a morbid fascination with them. Sorry for the novel.

That's a really good point, I never thought of it like that. A little side mission exploring that would have been class.

Regards the game, I'm actually neck deep into the BoS story line and enjoying that again. Looking at my progress, I appear to have played Far Harbor and Robotron, but not touched the Nuka Cola Land.

I all seems like a bit of a blur.
