Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

I just finished The Vanishing of Ethan Carter for the second time, and would like to suggest it be added to the list. Fantastic little game, with a lot to chew over, I think. Though my non-gaming brother has been watching me play this and Life is Strange this last two nights, and has asked the quest...

Re: Our next podcast recording but one - Dark Souls II

"Try luring it out" Words to live (and die) by in Dark Souls II. Whereas Demons and Dark 1's level design showed great imagination and restraint, it's the enemy placement in Dark Souls 2 that keeps it from achieving the same heights. Too often, the designers' approach is to flood the level...

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording: Valiant Hearts: The Great War

I thought it was excellent. It was a bit of a mish mash of styles - platform puzzler, the dodging scenes, the historical notes overlaid - and this was matched by wild swings in tone, from the fights with the pantomime villain to the pathos of the characters' situations, via the horrors of war. It wa...

Re: Bloodborne

Rom gave me a lot of trouble to start with but here's how I did it: You can kill all the spiders in the first wave at your leisure, clear them all out and this means you won't have to deal with as many in waves 2 & 3. Then lay into Rom with heavy attacks, preferably with fire or electricity pape...

Re: Next week's podcast: Demon's Souls

Andy & Flabyo: I feel your pain, and to be honest I had some teething problems with it myself. Speaking of anecdotes, get this: it took me 11 hours to finish the first level. Eleven hours. :D I'd recently got back into gaming after years and years away, and was on a diet of normal triple A title...

Re: Steam Recommendations

I'd recommend Mount and Blade (the original) for DomsBeard's old laptop (check the specs though) and Mount & Blade: Warband for Hierony's new one. Both games are a little rough around the edges but are a unique experience and if they happen to hit your sweet spot, look out. Amongst the best PC g...

Re: Next week's podcast: Demon's Souls

It’s difficult to encapsulate what makes Demon’s Souls great, because there are so many things. It’s such an intricate game. From the weapons and their properties up – through the miracles, spells, character builds, to the environments where the level design brings you back round to your starting po...

Re: Dark Souls I & II

Pacing, innit? :D I loved that about Demons - each of these simpler stages is preceded by an horrific level or boss (Flamelurker, Maneater, 5-2 etc) right up to the final battle being preceded by the False King and then... I think the developers were having a bit of fun, while also mixing it up and ...

It's an outstanding little game/narrative. Light on challenge/gameplay, long on story.

It's unique. Be interesting to see what you make of it.

Re: Dark Souls I & II

I'm up to Ornstein and Smough now; the only real deviation I made from your run was after reaching Anor Londo, I went and got the Rite of Kindling, so I'd have 20 flasks for O&S. I really need them as I'm a mediocre player. I tried the Stray Demon in the Asylum but had basically zero success the...

There seem to be loads of Flash games - I think this was the one I played a few years back and it seemed fairly faithful.

Re: Dark Souls I & II

I've watched up as far as end of ep 5 now and have started my own SL1 playthrough. Despite getting the DS Platinum, I'm pretty pants at the game, so I don't expect to get very far. Just rang the first bell. Main issue so far has been kicking Lautrec off the ledge, which I failed. Alarmingly, the fir...

Re: Dark Souls I & II

Great stuff, very enjoyable and you do a great job of explaining what's going on and what the future might hold. It was enough to make me go back and rinse 1-1 in Demon's NG+.

Re: This week's podcast: Deadly Premonition

What did you not like about it, Sean? :D delb2k makes a great point there when he talks about something to latch on to. For me the hook was the humour - and not necessarily the more surreal stuff like the sinner's sandwich which was a bit too wacky. I loved it from the scene at the start on the brid...

Re: This week's podcast: Deadly Premonition

http://i39.tinypic.com/5mg55x.jpg I'm not usually one to get emotional about games, but let me get this out of the way: The Director's Cut is an absolute disgrace. The inclusion of a framing story that makes no sense (telling a story of serial murder to a young child), robs the story of it's moment...

Re: PlayStation Plus (and the PS Store in general)

I use http://maximuscards.com/

Used them several times so far for $50 psn cards and they've been fine. They charge a fair bit on top though, 10 bucks or something.

Avatars are linked to your PSN id so they don't transfer over, so don't buy any.

Edit: a $50 card is $58.95

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I have that podcast to thank for me replaying RDR (I never usually replay games). So worth it, thanks guys!

Dogget - I found the PS3 version to be much inferior, technically, to the Xbox one, which is a pity. Still excellent though.

Link doesn't work for me and I can't track down any games section on BT. It's not region-restricted, is it?

Re: Dark Souls I & II

There's no need to play Demon's first, so don't worry about that. To me, it sounded like the PC issues were overstated by people who resented the port; I know some PC enthusiasts who had no issues with it. The first two links on this page should sort you out though: http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mo...

Too late! I downloaded it the other night and made my way through 1-1 last night. Seeing the blank set of trophies is quite delicious :D

Uncharted 3, XCOM and LBP Carting have replaced Infamous, LBP and Motorstorm as the 'permanent' freebies.
