Re: What's Out This Week?

I’m told it’s pretty good, has most of the people that designed and developed the original working on it.

I never liked the original much, so I can’t really comment.

Re: Sound of Play: 237

While I do love the original TR music, I think the main theme they’ve built up for Lara in the three reboot games is a good one too.

But yeah, Nathan’s work is top tier.

Re: Retro gaming

It does start with an opening tutorial that’s in media res, but after that it goes back to a few months before that point and the game runs in linear time for the rest of it (it eventually catches up to the point that the tutorial takes place in around the start of chapter 2).

Re: Retro gaming

FFT is short for Final Fantasy Tactics, the game my avatar is from over there —>

It uses a job / skills system that is pretty much lifted from FF5 and expanded upon. A lot.

But you’re actually playing FF4 so the tangent was completely pointless :)

Re: Retro gaming

FFT probably does have the most complex story of any FF game, I’ve heard it compared to Game of Thrones and that’s probably not far off. Lots of kings, lords, knights and priests with lots of names to remember. The PSP version tightens the translation in many places which helps with the comprehensio...

Re: Retro gaming

I still find it amusing that someone at Square USA looked at ff5 and went ‘nope, waaaaay too complex for Americans’.

The released FFT a few years later, which is FF5 on steroids.

Re: What's Out This Week?

The various bits of Kingdom Hearts games prior to 3 might be appearing on the XBO this week as well.

Well I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be listening to all the many versions of “Opening - Bombing Mission” this afternoon.

Re: Games Completed 2020

Jan 10th - Spider-Man (PS4) Jan 26th - Children of Morta (XBO) Feb 10th - Indivisible (XBO) Odd one this. It starts off putting the emphasis on its combat system and feels like it’s going to be a streamline take on the JRPG. But then it starts adding in more and more world traversal mechanics and y...

Re: Sound of Play: 234

I didn’t spot the Fable track? Oh dear. (In my defence, I didn’t work on the first one, so it’s soundtrack isn’t burned into my memory like the ones for the sequels are)

Re: Retro gaming

Yeah, the consoles show a real desire from them to help preserve video game history, but the DAC shows they also understand that a large part of that is the *entire* experience, which includes playing on CRT. The MegaSg has a mode where it tries to figure out where developers were using dithering to...

Re: Retro gaming

Old Sony TVs really are the workhorse of the retro game scene, they seem to last forever. Yesterday evening Analogue announced that the set of cartridge adapters for the MegaSg were available to order. These let you play GameGear, MyCard, Sc-1000 and Sc-3000 games on it. Figured I’d order some this ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I really enjoyed Horizon at the time. I like the post-post-apocalypse aesthetic a lot, and I got pretty invested in the story. But having played both Breath of the Wild and AC Odyssey since, I think it’s been outclassed now. (At the time I said that Horizon felt like the pinnacle of ‘old’ open world...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Still plugging away at Indivisible. Early on it’s the combat system that is the most important thing, but as the game has gone on the combat has gotten much easier and it’s the platforming skills you need to even get around the levels that takes center stage. It’s not going to trouble someone who ca...

The Japanese release of it in 2018 (yes, that long ago) has an xbox one version as well, so I’d be surprised if that doesn’t turn up too.

I think that’s a little bit of what gets to me with his games. He wants to tell these serious stories with what he believes are important things to say, and then he undercuts the verisimilitude with the weird names, fourth wall breaks and sometimes outright misplaced misogyny. He wants to have his c...

Trying to remember if the Dark Crystal game is a gamepass one or not. Either way, I love me some tactics so it’ll likely get played.

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

I’ve watched a few videos talking about the remake recently, and almost everyone in them is around the same sort of age. People who would’ve been in the early to mid teens in 97/98 when FF7 first came out. It’s a hugely important game to a lot of people, but it seems to be especially true of that ag...
