Re: Google Stadia

Basically what I’m saying is that for real-time interaction, the *amount* of data you push through the pipe is less important than the amount of time it takes to do that controller move to eyeball response loop. Google’s approach here is to move *everything* that isn’t the final decode from the clie...

Re: Google Stadia

Cool, was hoping someone with some engineering nous would weigh in. I only know about the gamefeel side of things, where anything longer than 100ms between controller input and the result reaching the eye feels crappy and you have to work to minimise every possible step in that process as much as yo...

Re: Videogame News

It’s worth experiencing at least one of them to make your own opinion. Just cause I think he’s a hack doesn’t mean you will, I’m fairly sure a lot of the authors I like would be disliked by plenty of people. (I also get rubbed up the wrong way by studios that base themselves around the auteur princi...

I still want to know how we pay for it, and how the people making things for it get paid.

Re: Google's Gaming Announcement

And it doesn’t matter how amazing your tech is and how many data centres you build... You cannot send data faster than the speed of light. If you’re more than about 100 miles from a data center then it’s going to feel worse to you than playing on your Xbox. For a lot of games, and a lot of gamers, t...

Re: Google's Gaming Announcement

It’s not a new idea, but previous attempts have shown that if you don’t have the infrastructure you can’t make it work. Google are probably best positioned of anyone to actually try it. But... 1) no mention of how you actually pay for it. Most people are assuming subscription, but is it? 2) no menti...

I have Steel Empire for my Megadrive, it’s another one of those carts where the name on the title screen changes depending on where I set the region switch.

Re: E3 2019 - Conference times and general chat

When EA can spend a few million on twitch stream celebs to push a game and get great results, they’re not going to spend those same millions on an E3 event that comes off as cheesy and broken. The days of the embarrassing live stage reveal are kinda done. And as someone who’s had to crunch hard to g...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I’m expecting I’ll go back to Dead Cells when the free expansion drops, it adds new areas and some new boss encounters, which I think it needs.

Re: Retro gaming

They had the back room as well this time which helped a bit, but yeah, it needs a much larger space if they’re going to keep charging that kind of entrance fee. I was there 40 minutes before they opened and the queue was already pretty lengthy. I had about 5 to 10 minutes of decent browsing before i...

Re: Association Football (aka 'Soccer' / "The Beautiful Game")

First game I ever saw in a stadium was Notts County v Millwall. We got free tickets as part of a school thing we’d been doing. Sherringham scored the winner, and we were a very long way away from the away fans :)

Re: Retro gaming

The built in basic on the c64 was a bit rubbish, it was much the same as the version for the PET and didn’t give you access to all the cool stuff the machine had. Simon’s basic adds a bunch of stuff to it to make it more on a par with something like the version on the BBC.

Re: Retro gaming

Went along to the gaming mart today, picked up a few Megadrive games. Boxed copy of Crude Busters which I remember playing on a friends machine a lot as a kid, and unboxed copies of Strider (not sure how that’s never been in my collection) and Legend of Galahad (which I remember more as Leander on t...

Re: Microsoft Xbox news and discussion thread

You know how you can use your Facebook account to sign into games and have progress saved to the cloud? It’s like that, only you can use your Xbox live account instead. And there’ll be achievements.

Go play something Wordament on mobile to see an existing game with Xbox live integration.
