Re: The state of the industry

It’s very rare to actually get paid any extra for doing overtime in games though, I certainly never have been. And while it’s easy for a studio to say ‘you don’t have to do it”, the career and peer pressure you get if you don’t can cause real issues between staff members, and tends to be a fast trac...

GoG have an absolutely tone deaf approach to social media though.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Putting my dev hat on (I never really take it off) it’s not so much a long loading time as it is there’s a clear ‘hang’ in the load that lasts about a minute. It’s doing ‘work’ that it doesn’t need to, or it might be that it’s trying to contact an analytics service via a duff address so it’s just wa...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I really want to recommend Soul Calibur 6, it plays well and is probably the best the series has been since 2. But on the Xbox one the loading times are dire, and the online simply does not work. Lots of us cannot get it to connect to a game at all. (And they ran a network test beta a few weeks back...

Re: The state of the industry

Rockstar are not just in the UK. Most of the dev for RDR2 was in their US studios (and the main culprit appears to be their primary QA department). What you’re referring to is the EU working time directive. It’s part of a group of EU rules that define things like how much paid holiday employees shou...

Re: Videogame News

Konami have a lot of dormant stuff from the 80s and early 90s arcade scene, as do Namco. But none of that is really worth working up into something over just doing new IP really.

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

Kingdoms of Amular Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is on our long list already. Sadly they never got to continue the series! Yet. Someone recently picked up the rights to it... at the very least we might see it as a back compat on the XBO, but there’s a chance we might get more games in this series a...

Ah ok. The way it’s delivered if you let him live made me think that he might not get to say it if you shanked him. It is kinda the central plot point from that point on I guess. One thing I am realising as I play this is that there’s a definite change in scale going on here compared to earlier in t...

Re: Assassins Creed Odyssey

I did the opposite of both those decisions: The first: He gives up his command and ‘disappears’ into the wilderness. His troops all think he’s dead, but because they never found a body some people are still searching for him. A side quest around this pops up later. He also drops some exposition befo...

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)

Ok, this might be stretching the limit of the ‘no licensed music’ bit, but bear with me. Mike Ault joined the Rocket League team to compose music for the game, while they were in development he stuffed in a bunch of tracks he’d worked on privately prior to working there. In the end they kinda stuck ...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

Spidey is a little like Batman in that there’s been so many different writers with their own take on the character, so many gritty reboots, so many good, great and awful storylines, that you’re pretty. Much bound to find something in there you like.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

You’d think the spartan kick ability would get old after 50 or so hours. It does not. The game knows this and so has the AI go stand on cliff edges with their backs to you, tempting you to break cover and deliver them a kick. Then you die cause you’re not sneaking anymore and half the game world is ...

Re: Custom Soundtracks

I guess I’m not explaining it well. The original Xbox has an api where the *game* could control when and where the users music would be used. So it could still choose to use its own music for, say, cut scenes if it wanted to.

I guess I mean the full on ‘upload your tracks and they’re properly integrated into the game’ rather than ‘you may as well just stick headphones on and play it off your ipod’.

Very few games supported it though, from what I can recall. We were certainly never told we had to.
