Re: Retro / emulator handhelds
Well, that's £60 down the drain. Spent a few hours playing with the Zero today. Had just managed to get everything running then suddenly the screen went black. Bricked. As far as I can make out, it can be fixed but it needs to be completely wiped, which looks rather complicated as it involves some c...

Re: Whatcha Been Watching?
I watched Jon Favreau's Chef over the weekend. I thought it was pretty flawed - some of the twists the story takes are rather unlikely/implausible even for a film, and overall it's basically one big vanity project for Favreau (it's quite transparently about his own experience of making films in Holl...

Re: Any other Game Club, Retrospective and Replay Podcasts?
I used to like the now-defunct Retronauts podcast. I think the archive is still available if you have a poke around online. I also like Watch Out for Fireballs! . It's a little looser than C&R and tends to be more retro-focused but it's pretty good stuff. edit: doh!, sorry just saw that you alre...

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast
I'm listening to the MoH: Allied Assault podcast and Leon mentioning how ludicrous it all is (despite pretensions towards 'realism') got me thinking about Brothers in Arms for the original Xbox (and PS2?). I remember really liking this game for it's relatively low-key take on the WWII shooter genre....

Re: Our next podcast recording: Hotline Miami
As I have less and less time for gaming these days I tend to get my fix from shorter, more condensed games, so Hotline Miami was right up my street. The ultraviolent, Nicolas Winding-Refn-inspired aesthetic, garish pixel art-style and hectic electronic soundtrack sealed the deal. As with the Trials ...

Re: Alien: Isolation
It did very much seem to me when the game was first announced that it would probably be better suited to being a shorter, XBLA kind of game. It seems novel, but I just can't get my head around how it can sustain for 15+ hours.

Re: Retro / emulator handhelds
I remember back when I was teenager, me and my friend were obsessed with our (original) Playstations, but being teenagers money was scarce and we could only afford a handful per year, usually around birthdays and Christmases. To get around this we would basically 'divvy up' on all the essential AAA ...

Re: Destiny
I don't think story is Bungie's strong point at all. The first Halo was entertaining enough - and mercifully simple and mechanical plot-wise - but was really (as I think was noted in the C&R Halo: Anniversary review) a sort of sci fi pastiche that lifted story elements (Larry Niven's Ringworld),...

Re: Retro / emulator handhelds
It's payday and there was one second-hand zero going on eBay so I grabbed it. £60 inc postage so pretty pleased with that. I've had a real urge to play some 8/16bit games recently - there are so many classics, like Yoshi's Island, that I never played, and many others I never finished, like Zelda: Lt...

Re: Retro / emulator handhelds
I've just found out about the Zero, and am seriously tempted. All I want to do is play SNES and GBA games on a handheld, and since Nintendo is - for reasons known only to themselves - refusing to allow to legally do so on my 3DS, I might just go the emu route. The problem is that the Zero seems very...

I've just re activated my old Steam account after realising that the range of games available on Mac has just exploded in the last few years (there was naff-all last time I logged in). I had absolutely no idea so many of these intriguing indie games (Gun Point, Olli Olli, Nidhogg, Rogue Legacy, Stan...

I've been a member of the 2000adonline.com forum for many years - they're a very friendly, helpful and creative - if occasionally ever so slightly curmudgeonly - bunch. A fair few board members are active in the small-press comics scene, and a few have even gone on to professional comics careers. Th...

Kotaku for general news Cane & Rinse for retrospectives of stuff I've already played Edge for reviews and features I've been a loyal reader of Edge for 12+ years. I used to devour the latest issue cover to cover but in recent years I seemed to be finding less and less time to read it and ended ...

Re: Our next-but-one podcasting recording: Brütal Legend
Never played anything other than the demo, but thought it might be worth mentioning he recent Tenacious D-featuring episode of the (recommended) 'Indoor Kids' podcast, where Jack Black talks at about Brutal Legend quite a bit. I've always been hit and miss with Black's work, but on the show he comes...

Yep, I've seen a bit of the TV show too, which I assume is just a condensed version of the book.

Re: Whatcha Been Watching?
I recently caught Snowpiercer , which was immensely disappointing. I was expecting a gritty, action-packed slice of sci fi with a bit of substance - something along the lines of District 9 or Children of Men , but it's basically an out and out art movie, with a deeply eccentric tone that veers all o...

Re: History thread!
I've dabbled with Schama's History Of Britain - I'm sure I'll get round to listening to it properly at some point. I'm considering signing up for Audible to get it (and other history books) for a reasonable price. I've also tried Radio 4's This Sceptred Isle but again just found it to be a dry list ...

Re: History thread!
I've recently been listening to Anthony Beevor's World War 2 audiobook, and it's a good example of what I mean. It focuses so heavily on the political jostling - all old educated white men conspiring and plotting with or against each other, and while that may be accurate it does very little to expla...

Re: History thread!
I really like the BBC Radio 4 series America: Empire of Liberty (also available as an audiobook). It's a pretty broad history of America, from the founding fathers up to the inauguration of Obama and the financial crisis. At around 90 short 15-minute episodes it obviously covers a lot of ground quit...
