Re: Avengers: Endgame (Spoiler Thread)

Honestly, if you're seriously trying to make sense of the magical/time travel plot mechanics in this movie you're on a hiding to nothing - it's pure nonsense. It's a film in which a character decides to invent a time machine, and does so in the very next scene using magic particles that shrink thing...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I think it's enjoyable taken entirely on its own term but pretty singular and unforgiving. Yeah, it's surprisingly niche in appeal for such a high profile game. I'd be interested to see the numbers on players who bought it vs the percentage of them that actually persisted with it for more than an h...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

As I say, I should have known better. I had heard that the game started as a boss rush, but then the devs added in more conventional levels to make it more of a traditional Contra style run and gun. But so far there's only been a single 'level' and about 4 bosses, so I guess not?

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I have the chaser. It seems very weak though, so not sure how much of an advantage it is, at least on the 'easier' bosses. I should have known better - I generally hate boss encounters, especially long, drawn out, multi-stage ones. I just find them so stressful, something I need to get out of the wa...

Pretty sure it's only first party games that unlock at midnight.

Everything else tends to be mid afternoon on the the day of release.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Is the PS4/Switch port of FFVII easier than the PS1 original? I didn't think it was, but I basically just steamrollered my way through the game with no grinding whatsoever and demolished every single boss while barely breaking a sweat... Very different to my first experience playing the game. Maybe ...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I'll probably give Yoshi a miss, at least for now. It's been nice to revisit FFVII - the polygonal elements are impressively sharp and the 3x speed option is an absolute godsend - I don't think I'd have the patience to sit through the endless cut scenes otherwise, and it also makes grinding a lot mo...

Re: 371: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

Without a doubt a huge amount of this games appeal lies in its visuals. The world of Monkey Island 2 is gob-smackingly beautiful and showcases an incredible use of design, animation, colour and perspective to create rich and memorable environments and characters. Even at the time I remember marveli...

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I think it's mainly because the puzzle design in Zelda is usually so tight and prescriptive, and the ones in this one felt so different. I remember having a particular problem with the puzzles with the rolling boulders, or the ones where you had to freeze something, then apply force to it. Maybe it'...

Re: 386: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

I have a real love/hate relationship with this game. Assassin’s Creed is a series I have no interest in and this was the first (and only) one I have played. The reason for my interest in this one in particular is my general fondness for pirate-themed stuff, and I had long wished for an open world pi...

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I know it maybe sounds a bit ungrateful, but I can't help but wonder what a proper sequel would look like. It's an astonishing game in a lot of respects, but there's certainly room for a lot of improvement and tightening up of certain things. I'm in two minds about the weapon deterioration - initial...

Re: Google Stadia

Thing is, the traditional set top console and packaged game model has been surprisingly resilient. If you'd asked me 10 years ago, I would have guessed that games would be almost completely digital by now, but that hasn't been the case. People love thier consoles, and all that comes with them - the ...

I couldn't get on with Dead Cells. I think I just have to accept that I don't like procedurally generated games in general.

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

Brothers In Arms series? I think the series eventually ended up going off the rails, but I really liked the original Road to Hill 30 on Xbox. I much preferred its relatively sedate and restrained take on the WWII shooter genre over the likes of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, which always seemed s...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Trials Rising . The core gameplay is fun as ever - its Trials! - but I don’t think I’ve ever played a game that is so hamstrung by utterly baffling design decisions. To start with, the UI is a confusing, cluttered mess - totally overloaded with unnecessary fluff that just gets in the way of the gam...

Re: February 2019

I very much think you should keep the show as is regarding spoilers, for a few reasons: 1. You're never going to please everyone as the definition as to what even constitutes a spoiler varies greatly from person to person. Some people might consider discussions of skill upgrades or unlocks or explan...
