Re: What's Out This Week?

I'm very happy about the Mega Can X Collection. I've never played any of the X games so I'll definitely be picking it up, digital be dammed. I heard great things, though!

Re: Ikaruga

I was trying to figure out how you polished off that first train so quickly and why I'd never been able to. I'm not sure where I'm gaining time, though. Maybe the smaller bosses with the rotating satellite ships or the white beam guy. So by "train" you mean the first column before the rotating ship...

Re: Ikaruga

That's excellent play. Ksub! How much are you enjoying the game now? I've been having a lot of fun! This game is definitely a weight class above what I'm familiar with from Housemarque and to be honest with you, I doubt my skill would carry me all the way through the later levels. I'm very much enj...

Re: Ikaruga

Right, installing again as we speak. Good luck! Looking forward to your next update. :) Looking back on the thread... It's kinda silly how I didn't even know which buttons to press on the first page. What an incredible sense of progression. And many thanks for the wonderfully substantial posts that...

Re: Ikaruga

FjDjU_gHZS0 3,157,860, including all the columns at the end. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW, DOG BOY? Only thing I'm salty about is that I was a bit too cautious and didn't get any of the bonus strings at the end... There's still room for improvement! I noticed I was getting a bit frustrated while pla...

Okay, so you said "3.1m", but what is your highscore exactly? :P

Re: Other podcast recommendations

Just my two cents, but SoP is fantastic for long distance running. There is always a new unheard track around the corner to keep things fresh and it's not that big of a deal if one misses out on a bit of dialogue or two.

Re: Ikaruga

I couldn't think what you meant about those randomised strings - and then I realised. Are they different every time, then? I really never noticed that. I'd bet the contents of my pocket right now (£4.70) that they're not random. I thought I'd got that section down. Start slightly left of centre, ab...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Bravo! Congratulations, mate. Thanks! But it wasn't a good run, just 3,030,XXX. Which is obviously a joke, hence why I'm dumping it in this thread instead of the proper one. :P. I need to get quicker at dealing with the columns, but honestly what fucks me up more than anything are the randomized la...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Still pulling my hair out on Ikaruga . Just barely got S rank, but I feel like there's still a bit left in the tank. To be continued (hopefully). Alien: Isolation is good, I'm enjoying it so far. First person horror games with minimal gameplay are never going to be my jam, but this one is solid. Fan...

Re: Octopath Traveler

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. The line between a superficial recommendation and an in-depth critic should be more clear. And as Michiel said, getting rid of numerical scores would probably lessen the tension and potential backlash. It's true that the average consumer doesn't pick up on all t...

Re: Octopath Traveler

I'm not sure I agree you need to finish a game like a JRPG (or any game) to write a review for it anyway. I mean with a game like this, if you don't like the first 5 hours, or 10, 15, 20 hours, it won't and can't be redeemed if the last 5 or 10 hours are better or more entertaining. I suppose the i...

Re: Octopath Traveler

I see. Golden Sun was my introduction to the genre and remains one of my favorites to this day, but it is a bit too talky for its own good so I can't really recommend it to you in good conscience. It does cost less than 10 €/£ on the WiiU eshop, though. Baten Kaitos is an acquired taste, but has a w...

Re: Octopath Traveler

I'm so happy the genre has seemingly found its feet again and maybe one day I'll strike gold with another one soon, I was just hoping it'd be this one. What would your ideal JRPG be like, if you don't mind me asking? Are there any specific elements which would encourage you to pick one up? Any comp...

Re: Octopath Traveler

That's just not realistic with the way the industry (including attached media) works, I'm afraid. Reviews around release are usually intended as a purchase guide and if a game isn't good after 8-10 hours of play, that's as valuable a point to base your purchase decision on as any, I think. Cane and...

Re: Octopath Traveler

It's been a long while since I've based any game purchase of mine on a review, but I really don't think it's a great idea for them to pander to the lowest common denominator. A review should be representative of the product as a whole, I think. PS: It's especially egregious if the review itself does...

Re: Octopath Traveler

I can tell you from personal professional experience that I often had less than two full days with a Nintendo game before having to get a finished piece to my editor. That's just... nowhere near enough time. People aren't machines, especially when they need to do something that requires a minimum o...

Re: Videogame News

There should be no politics involved here whatsoever. What she did constitutes gross misconduct in pretty much any industry I can think of. To be fair, most industries don't have the kind of history of harassment / open hostility between consumers and professionals that the video game industry has....
