Witcher 2 is a great shout.
Metal Gear 5: Phantom Pain is just cutscences long corridors for ages. Then a stupid flying whale turns up. Takes ages to get to the (good) core gameplay loop.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Sorry to ask this. I didn't write down when the Yakuza like a dragon episode is due. Want to try and give it a go beforehand for feedback. Is there a written listing somewhere? It's show number 610 so should be due in around six weeks. Full listing is here: https://caneandrinse.com/forum/viewforum....

Re: A thread of the greatest game mechanics of all time...
The rewind mechanic in petty much any modern racing game. I'm not sure what was the first game to do it but the first I played was Colin McRae Dirt 2. I always found it frustrating in older racing games where you would make a mistake and then basically have to restart the race, the rewind mechanic ...

Re: A thread of the greatest game mechanics of all time...
The ones that come to mind are quality of life. Sure the witcher 3 wasn't the first, but NPC's matching your pace on the way to quests is great. I guess "detective mode" is pretty much the standard in so many games. I remember when shops in games didn't easily compare with your current equ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Onto new game plus in Horizon Forbidden West after finishing the DLC. I share some of Jay's issues with it, but overall I love the spectacle, so being very OP enjoying blitzing through the story and best side quests. I should be playing my backlogue like TLOU 2, Fallen Order, Disco Elysium, Ghosts o...

Introducing kids to videogames
Hello, listening to the patreon monthly, reminded me something I wanted to ask here. When and how did you introduce your small kids to games? My eldest is four, but didn't really understand a controller at the MOSI videogames exhibit recently. Thinking of getting a switch for them, but too soon and ...

Re: 547: Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
A shorter Spiderman game really brought out the best parts of the formula at a pleasing pace. Character building, massive set pieces, stealth sections and standard combat were balanced so well with much less filler.

Re: 520: Control
The game is great, but I look back in regret because
a) choppy framerate on ps4 did impact gameplay
b )I hit an unfortunate bug in the ashtray maze which necessitated restarts, ruining the flow for what might be the best sequence in the game

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast
Yeah it was very rough. I only tried shooting out of pure desperation. I was younger then, games were expensive and I was in the "I finish games" mindset. Now I would just have given up.

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast
Driver's already on the list. And we did cover Driver: SF which contains a little look back at the series. Not sure how much enthusiasm there will be among the team to revisit/complete the earlier games! Yeah the first two are hard to go back, having recently died. Driv3r was not great at the time....

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast
Listening to the SEGA rally pod. Makes me think a combined Gran Turismo 1 & 2 would make a great show. Not sure what the team's enthusiasm would be for it, of course. Could have a special guest, Eurogamer's Martin Robinson is the car game reviewer, or Mike Channel from Outside Xbox. I'm not even...

Re: 491 - Tomb Raider (1996)
This game is hard, even by 1996 standards. Too hard for me to see most of the game at 10 years old. Too antiquated for me to play now

Re: 470 - Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Of its time, brilliant in its time. Having a whole platforming game as one long (if linear) interconnected level was revolutionary in its time. Add to that well handling platforming, diverting 'vehicle' sections and wonderfully vibrant art design; Jak and Daxter was great in its day. The storytellin...

Re: 463 - Final Fantasy VII Remake
Eight was my final fantasy, so i didn't have the nostalgia for this game, i really enjoyed it. I have three major issues with the storytelling, even though i like challenging the original story. 1/ Having barratt come back from the dead means jeopardy is gone. Its hard to feel tension if resurrectio...

Re: Our next console special podcast recording (4.10.20) - Sony PlayStation 2
3D's potential finally realised. The ps2 for me is when the promise of 3D games truly came to fruition. Previous consoles had 3D, but in awkward or comprised fashions. This console really enabled a smorgasbord of genres to go full 3D. As a teenager during this time I lapped up these new experiences ...

Leon, you mentioned Limmy's streaming and, separately football on this pod.
Have you come across Bilal Zafar's old PES streams? They use pes 6 as a lunch pad for some very off the wall storytelling.
Bonjela addiction, players with pacts with the devil, open mic comedy nights. Its amazing.

Re: 438: Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Odyssey is a beautiful game with many interesting systems. But exploration of the expansive world is restricted the with strict level gating. For those players with lots of spare time (or a Jay type personality), I can imagine the slow methodical progress would be great. I however don't have that am...
