Re: The Last of Us Part II

*Apologies in advance for the extreme post length, I'd intended to write a short summary. Oops!* I spent twenty hours or so thoroughly rinsing Naughty Dog's magnum opus. I scoured every lovingly crafted environment, found every collectable and marvelled at the stunning tech, well drawn characters an...

Re: Final Fantasy VI

I haven't played it for a long time but to my recollection, there is a point in the game where the difficulty will spike and then stay at that higher level, even then it's not particularly hard though. It's a problem with the series at large from 6 onwards. Loads of interesting systems with real dep...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Oh and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on 3DS is excellent too and can be picked up for next to nothing. I picked this up once on a trip to Amsterdam and had a wonderful time with it, bit of a sleeper it seems. It's great isn't it? Bought it alongside my console at launch and it remains my favourite title...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Hmm, in all honesty it's not a genre traditionally well suited for that style of pick up and play. It's only in recent years really that we've seen more accessible entries like Rabbids and Steamworld. If you still have a GBA/DS knocking around and have never played the Advance Wars series then that'...

Re: Games Completed 2020

I finished Steamworld Heist yesterday. Really fantastic turn based combat game. All the characters felt unique and it had some interesting upgrade trees and weapons. Great variety of enemies too that meant every battle was fun and engaging. On experienced difficulty I found it just the right amount...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Yeah, I thought the DLC might be worth looking into if I ever were to revisit the game. The thing is, this specific type of "floaty" arcade racer isn't reaaaaally my thing, so the WOC is probably all I'll ever need for at least a few more years since I have only finished a tiny percentage of it! Th...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I played roughly a third of Redout a few years ago and found it a lot of fun, despite being more of a F-Zero fan at heart. Unfortunately, the shoestring production values and perceived repetitiveness of a lot of the campaign events kinda discouraged me from completing it. Hard to compete with the W...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

The Wipeout chat on here the other day got me in the mood to play something similar so I picked up Redout on PC and so far, I'm having a great time with it. It's handling model is solid and fun with plenty of scope for skillful play even if doesn't quite have the snappy, responsive feel of an F-Zero...

Re: Shmups

Aww, don't let it get to you. It was a fun stream and to be fair, I sure as hell couldn't play that game with the level of distraction you're dealing with whilst also acclimatising to a different control method. A good time was still had by all 🙂

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (24.5.20) - 420: Gradius series

Gradius V embraces both styles and requires both skillsets on higher difficulties/loops, I’d suggest: Thanks Leon, I'm quite familiar with that game already though! (See my first post). I love that game and it definitely does require both skillsets, increasingly so on higher loops but I've never qu...

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (24.5.20) - 420: Gradius series

Interestingly enough, this exact criticism is why I don't enjoy the likes of Gradius and R-Type anywhere nearly as much as bullet hell games. They are overwhelmingly memorisers, from my perspective, and it's incredibly difficult to recover or adapt if you die or find yourself out of position. That'...

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake

I say go for it. I imagine a lot of the new stuff in Remake is fairly incomprehensible if you're not familiar with the original's story, I can only imagine that will be even more so in the next part. If you enjoyed this one, I think you're enjoyment of future releases would only be enhanced by havin...

Re: Retro gaming

I've been playing it on Vita a bit, it's still really fun :D It's a shame we haven't seen further iteration on it's indirect attack style of gameplay, it was such a satisfying system. I'm sure there must have been something since, probably in the indie space but I'm struggling to call anything to m...

Re: Retro gaming

If you're going back to PS1 games, Gregstrum, please give Silent Bomber a look. It was one of the greatest action games on the console. Woefully overlooked when it's come to re-releases or remasters. Not even available on PSN other than in Japan. It's really a fantastic game, almost like an early P...

Re: Retro gaming

Obviously value is completely relative but it's well worth the money. It looks astonishingly good for a PS1 game and they'd perfected the gameplay by this point. One of my favourites on the system.

Re: Retro gaming

2097 is a fantastic game. Make sure you check out Wipeout 3 SE at some point too. Best game in the series in my opinion, they never quite got the physics right in future entries.
