Re: Shmups

@KSub Not at all, my good man. I'm not really sulking, just playing to the camera. If you do come up with a list, I'll be very interested to check it out. I'm definitely going to keep branching out of this thread because I suspect it's a pretty daunting, fast moving prospect, even for someone with a...

Re: Shmups

Is Fantasy Zone a shmup? Success! It is indeed, dez. I've not played very much but seen it's recently come out on the Switch. If you like that one, plenty of us in here would recommend Black Bird which is like Fantasy Zone directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, soundtracked by some seriously weird jazz op...

Re: Shmups

Yeah, I won't stop there, just hamming it up. I'm gonna bump the top 25 thread, for sure. I might make a 'Shmups Beginner Welcome' thread, too. Those three in your list are all fantastic, by the way. Magical Isopod is spot on about Einhander. It's different and I need to give it more time but I real...

Re: Shmups

My attempt at broadening the appeal of the genre have failed after two threads so I will skulk back into our cosy grotto of morbid moe, canny cancels and doujin demos. Bit of BSM in the background, tucked up in bed playing Darius Gaiden. That's the life for me.

Re: Super Mario Maker 2 - **1st Page For Community Level Codes**

I've only put twenty or thirty hours in, Haze, but it is an immensely brilliant game. I didn't last long but the creation and sharing and discussion is awesome, as well. I guess interest has faded a fair bit here now but as Suits said, I think the subreddit is meant to be booming. I keep meaning to ...

Please don't run away. This is the friendliest, most welcoming, encouraging and enthusiastic and insane place to discuss shmups.

Re: Top 25 Shmups of All Time (Shmups Forum)

I've never played it and until ten seconds ago thought it was a doujin when I saw it mentioned (probably by yourself!). I'll give it a try when I unbugger my PS Classic and get Retroarch working again. I do wonder about my ability to enjoy a NES shmup, but I am prepared to open my narrow judgemental...

Re: Retro gaming

These RR posts and the PSP special have been really making me feel like I would enjoy a PSP. Or would a Vita be more sensible? I've no real interest in emulation on either, I just want to play some PS1/2 era stuff and I think it'd look better on handheld than on the telly. Is that the value of this ...

Re: Top 25 Shmups of All Time (Shmups Forum)

In fact, having just played half an hour of DariusBurst Another Chronicle 50cm from a 55" screen, it's got to be on this list. Amazing experience, even at home. Batrider is getting bumped.

Top 25 Shmups of All Time (Shmups Forum)

I hope it's OK to link to the shmups forum and their 17th annual poll: https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65854 I wonder if anyone else here would have a list? I'm not encouraging anyone to vote necessarily, but the idea is an interesting one to discuss. Here's mine: [25] [Mushihimesama...

Re: Battle Garegga

It's definitely worth it and while you can easily emulate it to try it out, the M2 port is stuffed with invaluable features and info to show you what's happening behind the curtain.

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (19.1.20) - 402: God of War (2018)

To me, God of War is the 'Oscar fodder' of the medium, a ponderous, overly earnest drudge. Repetitive dialogue, inane incongruous puzzles and constant 'walk and talk' sections while the next corridor or combat arena loads. There are some astonishing set pieces from a graphical point of view and the ...

Re: Battle Garegga

I was surprised at how accessible and, well, fun it was This is what most surprised me, too. It has a reputation for being very much a hardcore shmupper's shmup but if you're playing for survival, it's just a bloody great fun game. And beyond that, messing about with different approaches and trying...

Battle Garegga

https://m2stg.com/en/battle-garegga/xboxone/manual/assets/img/1.jpg Within two days of getting it, I'm already convinced this will be one of my most cherished games in years to come. It is very special. For anyone who doesn't know but who is interested, it's a 1996 arcade shmup developed by Raizing...

Re: Shmups

Eyy yo, clip! Great vid, that was a lot of fun, a roller coaster! First two and a half stages I thought he's hammed it up here, looking cool as a cucumber. Then I thought that's just stage 3 on its bullshit, you had to bomb, no choice. Stage 4 was going great, quality use of the cancels, but by the ...

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

What you playing it on, Stan? I got it on PS4 via the US PSN store but it's also on the XB, also via US store. 35 dollars. I would love it if on the Switch but I very much doubt they'll go back to the 2016 port and re-port that. I vowed not to get any new games til FF7R but I don't regret this one ...

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

I would love to hear an issue on Battle Garegga , I think it would make for a fascinating discussion. I've never played a shmup quite like it. It's an instant classic for me. I've played it before a handful of times via emulation but it's taken the M2 STG release to really get me to pay attention an...

Re: Successful Spiritual Successors

Armed Police Batrider is a spiritual successor to Battle Garegga.

I probably prefer the former but the latter is excellent, too.
