Re: Games Completed 2020

Beat Axiom Verge last night. Current impressions...it's fine. I don't know why I didn't get on with it, but the backtracking wasn't enjoyable. There were times I'd look at the map, realize I had to cross the whole thing and sigh. It's an impressive achievement of a game, but I was hoping to really g...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

Agreed on all the Death and Gaiman Sandman asides. Overture actually got me chocked up a bit when it first came out.
And I've never read Lucifer but it's been on my list for decades (frick, that's accurate).

Re: Comic Book Chatter

Still re-reading Sandman, and just finished The Kindly Ones for the first time in over 20 years. I never got on with that book the first time I read it, but I really liked it this time round. My wife got me the full trade set for our anniversary and it will be the first time I've reread the series ...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

I've just given up our storage facility so have a lot of comic books on my hands. Keeping everything Batman but moving on everything else. Before I post them on ebay I thought I'd pop them on here to see if anyone is interested in any of them? The Last Of US American Dreams Watchmen Civil War New 5...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Finished Mirror's Edge last night. It's a pretty cool game that I wish didn't have a story. The in-game aesthetics are just so strong that the flash-style animated sequences and confusing story with characters I never remembered the names of just took away from it all. But, I beat the game in about ...

Re: Console Special No.8: Nintendo Super Famicom (SNES)

I first started playing video games on the NES with the original Mario Bros. game, but I will still very young. Young enough, even, to not be aware that a SNES was on its way. So, on Christmas of ’93, when I opened my gift wrapping and found a Super Nintendo inside, with a packed in Super Mario Worl...

Re: Whatcha Been Watching?

January has been 70s SciFi month on the Criterion Channel streaming service. So far, I've watch A Boy and His Dog, No Blade of Grass, THX, Death Race 2000 and Rollerball. I've got another five of these movies to watch by the end of the month!

Re: Games Completed 2020

A bit late to the Devil May Cry 2 conversation, but did we ever find out why the game came out so underwhelming? Was it a case of Capcom being surprised by the first games success and pumping out a sequel or was it something else? Or was it nothing and it was just a disappointing game?

Re: Games Completed 2020

I finished the first Witcher game. Honestly, I got on with it fairly well. There were issues, for sure. I get why people don't like the combat (and fights with Wraiths boiled my blood) and the games backtracking needs ANYTHING to make it less of a slog. But, even with those issues, I still enjoyed m...

Re: Gambling in gaming

Not surprising. And how many free-to-play, freemium, pay-to-win games are addictive, but not fun? I've had to stop so many games, mobile or otherwise, because I realized I was hooked, but not for enjoyment reasons. It's interesting that on the ESRB site, they put simulated gambling under the Teen ra...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

1. Got here late to the Watchmen talk. To each their own, but I first read Watchmen in 2003/4, not the 80s, and I couldn't put it down. I think it still holds up and does a lot of things that have been imitated but not exceeded. However, I totally see why people might not like it these days, especia...

Re: Successful Spiritual Successors

Definitely agree with Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and it was my favorite game that year. It's an older one (and maybe it doesn't count?), but Theme Park becoming Roller Coaster Tycoon was huge and still tons of fun to play. And, in some ways, Dragon Age felt like one for the Baldur's Gate series.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Having finally finished the books, I started the first Witcher game last night. I never touched the first game because even the second was a bit too janky for me (after playing the pretty janky 3rd game!). Fair play for giving it a go, though. I'm certainly intrigued about the narrative and charact...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Having finally finished the books, I started the first Witcher game last night. Spent most of the night just doing the opening prologue and then wandering around talking to people in the first town area. I think I got most of the conversations out of the way and I can spend the next session doing ac...

Re: Games Completed 2020

First game finished in 2020 is Red Dead Redemption. I think I started the game back in November. Took my a while to finally find a rhythm. It's just as good as everyone says. I think I would be more gobsmacked if I had played the game around the time of release, but the nice thing about behind so be...

Re: Books completed

Over the holiday, I read the Witcher book, Season of Storms, It was nice to get back to a Geralt focused story, after the Witcher novels when almost too big for their own good. https://ericmikols.com/2020/01/04/book-review-season-of-storms/ I also read Jo Walton's Among Others, a fantasy book that's...
