I mean, it's definitely a call back, but it was used with more restraint in the originals. it feels like the Mania team were having too much fun designing the levels. they are gorgeous, tho.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Sonic Mania was a surprising letdown for me. everything about the presentation was fantastic and it's obvious the creators have genuine love for the classic series. unfortuantely, I felt control of Sonic was too often taken out of my hands while the stage itself just flung me around various springs ...

can't vouch for the performance on the Switch, but Hyper Light Driter is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite games. I highly recommend it.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
back around the time of its release, I made a post here about Dead Cells , basically asking for advice about whether or not I should give it a try. I liked the aesthetic a lot, but other rougelikes I've played (Risk of Rain and Enter the Gungeon) were not my cup of tea at all. well, I finally played...

Re: 374: Furi
I'd say yes — the story does some interesting things. if you can get through it without sacrificing too much time, give it another crack on easy.
also, keep in mind that some of the later boss patterns are impenetrable; you simply need to survive long enough until they drop their guard...

Re: 374: Furi
LOOKS Furi has a great look. I love the color scheme and the relatively flat, stylized presentation. The character designs are unique and hit a sweet spot that shouldn't seem to exist between wacky and deadly serious. The visuals really shine in the environments during the walking scenes between fig...

hopefully it'll get the M2 ShotTriggers treatment one of these days.

Re: Shmups
Speaking for myself (whether it's the best or not I'll leave others to debate), use the Mad Catz Street Fighter V Arcade FightStick TES+. It covers both PS3 and 4 (both still very much plugged in), and covers every game that doesn't require the second analogue stick. Pricey, though, but it's solid,...

Re: Shmups
speaking of the 360, I've got a HRAP EX-SE on that console that served me well my brief time with the system, but I need recommendations on a good shmup-friendly stick for the PS4. not into modding/customization, though, so something right of the shelf is what I'm lookin' for. anyone?

Re: Shmups
After my buddies got heavy into the tournament side of fighting games, I sorta fell out of the love with the genre and retreated to the SP refuge of shoot-em-ups. It’s now my favorite genre. Funny that ESP Ra.De. was mentioned, as that’s probably my second favorite and always seems to be overlooked ...

even though I've never been into horror and have always been a bit of a wuss with such things, I gave the RE2 demo a whirl and I think I actually wanna get it... Wargroove, Wargroove and a little bit more of Wargroove this weekend. literally just heard of this game this week. I think I shall make it...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
a couple of hours into my newest purchase, Tetris Effect , and it has totally charmed me. it really leans into the whole new-agey, "journey of discovery" thing, but though it's easy to scoff at, I've been embracing it and approaching the game as a kind of meditative come-down from more int...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Celeste Games like this are not usually my thing (as I am terrible at them) but I am still loving this game and playing it daily. Up to Chapter 3 and at 300 deaths now think I am near the end of it. The soundtrack and the fact that each one of those 300 deaths has felt 100% my fault has kept me goi...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Trust me, Okami picks up. You quickly start getting different combat mechanics that allow you to do different things, and experiment in battle. I hear ya, but I don't know if I'm willing to maintain the slog until then. we'll see. I'm starting Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It's part of my res...

yeah, I get that it's a convenient shorthand to get across an idea efficiently. it still irks me, though, haha. it's like saying vinyl is a genre of music.

Re: Nex Machina
Whenever reading anything about Housemarque, it always confuses me when they’re mentioned as being makers of “arcade” games. “ Arcade is not a genre ,” I always think. But after being sucked into the vortex of Nex Machina, I kinda understand. While I maintain that “arcade” is in fact NOT a game cate...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Okami is a veeeeeeeeery slow burn. It's about 40 hours long for a first time play, and a solid 20 of that is world building. It really pick up pace in the second half. That said, yeah, if you don't have the patience to sit through 20 hours peaceful Zen gameplay? Don't force yourself through it and ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
currently attempting to play Okami HD for the first time (I missed it the first go-round). I had high hopes for this game, but so far I think it's just OK and I don't feel very compelled to play more; if I continue on, it'll be out of a sense of duty . (I'm also a bit upset that I missed the cut-off...
