Re: Horizon Zero Dawn

Very good points, especially about a personal #25 game not necessarily being a stone cold classic. Cheers. Edit: Apologies I can't engage with you a bit more on Observer but I don't remember a lot about it at this stage, though your post brings back the apartment block and the receptionist guy in p...

Re: Our next podcast recording (27.10.18) - 343: Horizon Zero Dawn

Here's my Top 100 List because I like to share it: https://pastebin.com/SjUWU5DJ I also enjoyed your comments on HZD very much. I am however, amazed to see Observer in here at #24. I think it's the first time I have seen it mentioned on the internet since it was released :D I'm not dissing your cho...

Re: Our next Resident Evil podcast recording (16.11.18) - 346: Resident Evil 6 (Biohazard 6)

I paid a whopping $3.99 for a copy of this game on eBay, shipping included. Even at that price, I feel as though I've been cheated out of good money. I would have rather spent that cash on a scratch ticket. I bought this game with the sole intent of having a little fun streaming a notoriously crap e...

Re: Our next podcast recording (27.10.18) - 343: Horizon Zero Dawn

Fantastic read, Isopod. :) I found the game pretty disappointing myself, mostly for gameplay reasons, but it's interesting to see how much more positive people can be by approaching it as a narrative-first type of quasi-literary experience. I wrote this in the middle of a very slow 12-hour night sh...

Re: Our next podcast recording (27.10.18) - 343: Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero Dawn was my favourite game of 2017, and 2017 was an absolutely phenomenal year for gaming - Observer, Sonic Mania, RE7, Hellblade and Nier Automata being some other standouts. Where to even start with this game? I'm going straight into spoiler territory here, because the set-up and pre...

Re: Our next podcast recording (20.10.18) - 342: Final Fantasy VI

(Phew, got in just in time!) Final Fantasy VI is, in my mind, both a great game and a mixed bag. The story starts off really strong - it gives off an entrancing aura of mystery and fantasy that feels incredibly alluring and drives you forward into the unknown. Who is Terra? What was the frozen monst...

Re: 333: Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles was my Game of the Year for 2008 - and 2008 was a darn good year for games. I was so hyped for this one that I pre-ordered it. The majority of the games on my personal Top 100 list are there for strong narrative, or strong audiovisual design. Valkyria Chronicles stands apart from...

Re: Special No.2: PlayStation - recording mid-September 2018

(This post will likely be a work in progress until September because I will likely remember a ton about this thing over the next few weeks, but here goes ...) Following from my commentary on the Sega Genesis is a little difficult, because the timing of events at this stage of my life is a little haz...

Re: 331: Daytona USA

I personally don't have much experience with this particular game, but as a child of the 90s, I remember it as a mainstay of noisy arcades, where one could gamble tens of dollars on meaningless tickets. You were never going to have enough tickets for that N64, Isopod. Why did you even try? Anyway - ...

Re: 330: Resident Evil Zero (Biohazard 0)

Resident Evil 0 is a game I'm very lukewarm on. It retains most of the core mechanics of the 2002 REmake, which is a great thing, but despite having beaten it three times now, I always come off feeling a little disappointed. The graphics are outstanding, it plays well, the locales are interesting......

Re: Our next podcast recording (23.6.18) - 325: Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight is one of the best NES games ever made, but therein lies the catch. I want to love Shovel Knight - I see the clear love and care they've put into crafting this game, and within the constraints of the type of game they were aiming to make it looks great. Only one issue. I simply do not ...

Re: 329: Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2)

I should note that while I mentioned the remake in my post, the lion's share of the commentary was actually on the SNES original. The glaring issues of the SNES original were not fixed for a remake, which I am expressing dismay with.

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (9.6.18) - 323: Final Fantasy IV

Final Fantasy IV is such an interesting game for me... It sits right on the boundary of "love it" and "hate it". But I wouldn't say it's average, either. It has a lot of REALLY great ideas, but doesn't really know what to do with them. It's got a huge cast of characters that rotate out in service of...

Re: 336: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

Resident Evil 4 is far from my favourite Resident Evil game, but it's memorable to me for one key reason: It sold me on the promise of the Nintendo Wii. I had owned RE4 on Gamecube. I wasn't crazy about it. I found the aiming reticule was too slow, and it was sort of a frustrating slog - it always f...

Re: 332: Final Fantasy V

In my mind, Final Fantasy V is the most underplayed and underrated in the entire series. It's really a hidden gem as far as Final Fantasy titles go. It's now had four releases in the west, but sadly, only the Gameboy Advance version presents the game correctly. I've personally played FF5 on PS1 and ...
