Yes that was exactly it the gore itself was fine it was more the thing of not knowing what's going in and the tension which is masterfully created by a lack of score and tracking shots.

Spoiler: show: I saved Del too. He was with you throughout everything and even though JD did end up helping out he was a bit of a dick. It does create some pointless continuity error going into the inevitable Gears 6 though. At the moment I'm thinking as Del surviving being the canonical ending.
