Re: Overcooked! All You Can Eat

I've got a pretty full plate right now ;) but I would love to do this some time. I've only ever used the game in the high school class I teach as a team building activity, but that's just because I haven't got anyone I know who's into it.

Thanks for the heads up. I like that justification for the repeats. Stay safe everybody.

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)

I've always wanted to make suggestions, but I want to avoid duplicates. Is there a spreadsheet somewhere that shows what's already been on the show? If so can someone throw me a link to it. Thank you.

Re: 449: Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey if nothing else celebrates the title character's maximalist nature. After all this pixelated polymath has made coin as a mascot, platformer, race car driver, painter, plumber, hand to hand combat expert, hospitality worker, sports star, space explorer, healthcare professional and...

Re: 444: The Return of the Obra Dinn

One of the high school students I teach recommended The Return of the Obra Dinn to me after I told him I'd beaten Cuphead. I don't really know why this particular student thought my enjoyment of the first game would make me take pleasure in a point-and-clickish nautical fantasy murder mystery set in...

Re: 443: Tetris Effect and Tetris 99

Like a lot of people I booted up Tetris 99 on release day, in part because of the novelty of it, and in part because, like a lot of players I imagine, I had a question I wanted answered: Was I any good at Tetris? It turns out I'm okay. I found my way into the top ten that day, and over the last 18 m...

Re: 436: Oxenfree

Oxenfree is the first walk and talk game I’ve ever played. It hooked me pretty quick with its ingenious twist of using a radio dial to function as a sort of ouija board, which felt symbolic of how the player is always trying to find just the right balance in this game to bring everyone home in one p...

Re: 432: The Gardens Between

The thing that impresses me most about The Gardens Between is the way it’s stuck with me despite my having not played it since it first came to Switch in 2018. I finished it in two sittings, but there are flourishes in this game that I can still recall after spending hundreds of hours in other virtu...

Re: 430: Paper Mario

Whoever put this game on the show list this year, I owe you a big thank you. Until this February I had never played a Paper Mario game. I’d tried Super Mario RPG and it didn’t work for me enough to stick with it for more than an hour. In fact it made me write off all Mario RPG’s, but Cane and Rinse ...

Re: 424: Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope / Plague of Shadows / Specter of Torment / King of Cards

The Shovel Knight DLC is a lot like the sack of candy I remember bringing home on Halloween night as a kid, a package of sizable heft with some treats you reach in and scarf down instantly because they’re your favorites, a coconut job you pass to your pops because he’s into that sort of thing but yo...

Re: 422: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon/Ritual of the Night

In January I played two games by noted design teams on my Switch. Both games were in familiar genres and both games brought me joy. Neither felt like it broke new ground and neither showcased the graphics of the hardware I ran them on, but five months later only Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon stick...

Re: Our Patreon

Just wanted to say that the last few episodes I've listened to, in particular the Axiom Verge episode, and the two Sound of Play's with Tom Quillfeldt have had a great vibe to them. A little more loose than the show can sometimes be, but in a very heartfelt way. When the current crisis is over, we'r...

Re: Super Mario Maker 2 - **1st Page For Community Level Codes**

The map building (whilst cool), simply adds a package in which peoples levels are delivered as it were. Saw your post on the podcast page Suits and thought I should bring that over here. Although this still might not be the right place. The thing I find most cool about the world builder is that it ...

Re: 426: Super Mario Maker/Super Mario Maker 2

Most of us have heard the nugget about the first rule of magic being that a magician never reveals how their tricks are done, and yet the Mario Maker series, of which I’ve played all three games, makes the act of revealing some of how Nintendo performs their most famous tricks its own sort of hocus ...

Re: 416: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

It’s not a surprise that Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze begins with a birthday party; it is absolutely a celebration of the series, a whistle blowing, rocket lighting, hard charging, beat on the ground, Mardi Gras style romp where almost every part of the game looked, sounded, and felt the way ...

Re: Super Mario Maker 2 - **1st Page For Community Level Codes**

This might be the antithesis of what Dez mentioned above, but anybody have any interest in doing some 426 themed making for the upcoming episode? I'm going to scrape one together regardless, but I've really enjoyed playing the community levels.

I should have liked Axiom Verge more than I did. I’m a fan of Metroidvanias or 2D exploratory combat platformers, or whatever we want to call these sorts of games. (Truthfully I’m willing to agree to let the mash-up experts at the excellent Play;Write podcast determine the moniker we go with for thi...

Re: 428: The World Ends With You

I made it through most of the second week of this game on Switch. I had an okay time, but it showed me that life is too short for a game to require its player to use touch controls for traversal, especially during combat. I've heard the DS version blends d-pad and touch controls, which might be bett...
