Re: 491 - Tomb Raider (1996)
I played this quite a bit on the PC around launch as a kid but never got very far, ending up using the cheat codes to skip around the game and see the shiny FMVs. But I went back to it in the mid-2010s as it felt like unfinished business and surprised myself by really getting into it. I was particul...

Re: 494 - Final Fantasy VII Remake / Intergrade
I was having a great time right up until that awful ending. I think metanarratives in games are very played out these days and, judging by the flashy anime garbage and gobbledegook about fate in the last 20 minutes or so, I have very little confidence that the story is going to go anywhere worthwhil...

Re: 497 - Death Stranding
Death Stranding has a very special place in my heart. As the game was released I was neck deep in the doomed campaign for Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party general election campaign. Almost every night I was walking around the dark and gloomy streets of London with a clipboard and list of addresses in ha...

Re: 488 - Castlevania (Akumajō Dracula)
Classic Castlevania had been a big blind spot of mine up until the Anniversary Collection and I was very pleased this lived up to the hype. It's an incredibly cliche comparison but the first game finally clicked with me when I started thinking of it as a 2D Dark Souls more than an action platformer....

Re: 496 - Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (Dracula II: Noroi no Fūin)
Simon's Quest felt like the actually quite refreshing NES-era trend to massively swerve away from the original when it came to sequels. The best example is Zelda II, but Konami trying to massively expand Castlevania into a cryptic open-world adventure with RPG elements and multiple endings shows a t...

Re: 411: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro has at least two of the most satisfying boss fights I've ever had in my gaming life. Genichiro kicked my ass for about a week, then one night after a very late play session (in which I made no progress) I went to bed mad at the game. While I was trying to get to sleep I repeatedly rehearsed t...

Re: Special No.5: Amiga (recording June 2019)
My very first gaming memory is on the Amiga: my Dad putting a joystick in my hand and teaching me how to play Hybris. He was (and is) always on top of new technologies and had snapped up an A500 ostensibly for work, but there were always a suspiciously large amount of games hanging around. I dimly r...
