Re: Books completed (and general book talk)
I recently finished The Trees by Percival Everett, and wish my biggest takeaway had to do with the thematic elements the book interweaves with dark humor rather than "this book has a lot of typos in it." Is that, like, a thing nowadays? The last few books I've read that were written in the...

Re: 545: Nintendo Land
On the one hand, Nintendo Land is a game that is far meatier than one would anticipate, allowing for both quick bursts of fun, longer and more rewarding content, and multiplayer that sells the concept of "this console is a DS with a movable touch screen" in a fairly straightforward fashion...

Re: Our next podcast recording (7.5.22) - 518: Chicory: A Colorful Tale
Chicory: A Colorful Tale is one of a select few games that encourages not perfection, but simply the best that a player can achieve. Yes, there is a win state, an ultimate goal in mind, but the way to get there is so open to interpretation that even if someone struggles with a puzzle here and there...

Re: 506: Super Metroid
My most recent playthrough of Super Metroid was done after I had my wisdom teeth removed. I had a mouth full of gauze and blood, I was loopy from the knockout drugs, and I needed to be supervised, so my father agreed to watch me play it to make sure I didn't collapse or anything. I should preface th...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
A local bowling alley has a SEGA Rally Championship machine in it, which is how I learned I'm incredibly bad at SEGA Rally Championship . I hope I can learn the secret to it without having to use more of my laundry money for it, but I also really do want to succeed in the actual arcade rather than t...

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast
While it may be a bit too on-the-nose of a title for such an unfortunate time we're living in, I would like to suggest The End is Nigh for a future episode. Edmund McMillen's semi-biographical game combines creative gameplay ideas, an equally dreary and dreamy environment, sensational reimaginings o...

Re: The Street Fighter thread
So here's a new one: why, in Street Fighter V , am I now jumping when I press the Heavy Kick button (in my case, RT on an Xbox One controller)? It only started with the Oro/Akira update, and it's made the game even more unplayable than it was on my end. It's only during gameplay, too, rather than me...

Enjoyed reading through those! I do have the complete opposite opinion on Rob (not Ron - he’s the sci-fi guy) Hubbard’s Commando theme though - my favourite game music ever! I did go into why here: https://retroarcadia.blog/2021/02/24/top-25-favourite-gaming-anthems-part-2/ Bit amateur compared to ...

I'm about a week into my fourth year of writing posts about video game music. If you filled out the survey I posted her last month, you'll probably see your answer written about if I haven't already. It's no Sound of Play, but any port in a storm, right?

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread
I mean... I'm excited to play the Famicom Detective Club duology, though I wish it could be purchased in a physical copy outside of Japan. (Also No More Heroes III continues to look like something that will kill my already dead social life, but that's not quite a surprise considering my username.)

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I'm struggling to think of something that drops a game's overall quality quite like the second quest in The Legend of Zelda . On paper, I get it. You beat the game, here's the harder mode, let's see how much you've learned. But there are so many asinine new additions that the whole thing seems less ...

Re: Our next Console Special podcast recording (3.4.21) - Nintendo 64
Over the years, I've learned that a more unconventional way to enjoy the Nintendo 64 is to find games that support the control pad. Side-scrollers like Mischief Makers and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards are enjoyable because of its large size making for easy movement, and puzzle games like Pokémon Puz...

Re: 456 - Pokémon
Why does everyone go left after they arrive at Ecruteak City? Is it just because of the route numbers? They see they're on Route 42 instead of Route 38 if they go right and think to themselves "whoops, that must be the wrong way!"? I'll admit that I'm just as guilty as anyone of doing this...

Re: Our next podcast recording (30.1.21): 454 - Celeste
Celeste is one of my favorite games... for the Pico-8. No level takes more than thirty seconds to beat. You're rewarded for immediate movement and learning on the fly rather than looking through a set of binoculars, memorizing what needs to be done, and repeating the same series of inputs over and ...

Re: Best in-game horses (Updated for 2021)
Yep, I did everything I could, albeit thanks to a bit of luck and some items from the shop. It took me longest to do the short-length ones, funnily enough, because I never was able to have a horse that both succeeded in that regard and had a good personality.

Re: Best in-game horses (Updated for 2021)
I would like to raise an objection to the lack of representation for Pocket Card Jockey , whose horses can be robots, dragonic hybrids, ninjas, or stereotypical Japanese biker gang members. Also none of the other horses on this list are powered by solitaire, unless Red Dead Redemption II is a lot be...

I've earned credits-viewing permission for Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, but unless I suddenly get very good at Checkers/Nine-Man's Morris/a bunch of other games, I won't be able to get all the medals.
At least there's Hanafuda to cheer me up.

Re: Games of 2021: What piques your interest?
Will this be the year that The Artful Escape finally releases? Or maybe Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course?
I mean, given my username, the obvious one I'm looking forward to is No More Heroes III, but those other two have been quiet for so long that they have my interest a bit more.
