Re: 630: Untitled Goose Game

Credit where it's due, Untitled Goose Game accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. That said, I feel a little sad to see so many people actively enjoying it. Maybe I'm just getting soft, but having a game where the prospect is to worsen people's lives isn't too thrilling. Ironically, I tend to ...

Re: 636: Vampire Survivors

There must be something wrong with me, because every time I do a run of Vampire Survivors I have to force myself to stay awake. It's active enough. There are plenty of stakes (pun not intended). But around the ten-minute mark or so, I find myself dozing off or otherwise struggling to remain invested...

Re: The Street Fighter thread

I'll be waiting a while to sink my teeth into this one, considering I don't have a machine that can run it (how did it even run V to begin with?). That, and no one quite replaces Birdie in terms of both gameplay and aesthetics. Manon comes close, though, at least in the former category.

Re: The videogame music thread

Tomorrow begins the sixth year of my annual month-long blog about video game music, with 2023's installment taking selections from Sound of Play's storied history. If you want to revisit some selections the hosts and community found especially interesting, or just need to waste a few minutes in the ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

At what point is Advance Wars meant to click for most people? I will say I'm playing the Re-Boot Camp version, so I have the benefit of Casual mode and its willingness to give me an extra tank or what have you, but I still feel like most of my victories come less from an understanding of the map and...

Re: Our next console special podcast recording (TBC.5.23) - PlayStation Vita

Hardware-wise, the Vita is just a Nintendo Switch with functioning control sticks and a smaller screen. It's serviceable, it fits in my pocket, and it can be used freely and unconditionally without my having to worry about a character walking to the left despite my not inputting it. But it is throug...

Re: Games Completed 2023

I finally finished Dangonronpa . I'm not too sure how I feel about the ending... Has anyone else played the sequels? Do they pay-off what gets setup in the first game? Danganronpa 2 sort of does. Ultra Despair Girls doesn't. The anime Danganronpa 3 attempts to fill in some gaps from the first two m...

Re: Games Completed 2023

Thanks to the addition of Game Boy games on Nintendo Switch Online, I finally played Metroid II: Return of Samus. I can definitely see why it's such a fan favorite. It's not the best in terms of raw gameplay, but it more than makes up for it in terms of atmosphere. It feels, for all the world, like ...

Re: Switch Recommendations

In terms of exclusives:

- the Mario + Rabbids duology
- Cadence of Hyrule
- Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together! if you have someone to play with

For the NSO libraries, don't overlook Fire 'n' Ice and Kurukuru Kururin, though the latter is only available if you get the Expansion Pack.

Re: 591: F-Zero series

In my mind, there are two types of F-ZERO games. On the one hand, you have titles like the Super NES original and Maximum Velocity . These are ones where victory is handled primarily through expert handling of your vehicle and knowledge of the course layout. Even when you're in first place you aren'...

Re: 590: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Superstar Saga remains the only game in the series where Mario and Luigi can switch places. I can understand why this was removed in future games. It's a bit tedious to have to add another button when wanting to do one overworld traversal technique over the other, and in terms of characterization, ...

Re: 567: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Luigi's Mansion 2)

One room in Luigi's Mansion 2 is beaten by climbing up the correct staircase several times in a row. In terms of gameplay, this is absolutely atrocious. It's mostly luck, it doesn't correlate much to Luigi's abilities, and every failure just intensifies things. But the gameplay isn't the point here;...

Re: 583: Golf Story

At the very end of Golf Story , the camera on the world map backs out, revealing that throughout your adventure you've been running around Australia, or a facsimile thereof. Initially, I considered this to be just a little nod to Sidebar Games and their country/continent of origin, but I think it go...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

A year after playing the demo, I've beaten NEO: The World Ends with You . I hesitate to say "finished" considering I have a bunch of things to do, namely due to the Ultimate difficulty not being unlocked until the postgame. It is a significantly better game to play than the original. Thing...

Re: 539: Metroid Prime

The best decision made in Metroid Prime was to allow the option for the game to outright tell you where something of note is located. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, especially considering I don't think it can be turned off in Metroid: Zero Mission , but as someone who struggles with first-pe...

Re: 533: Cuphead

Typically I play Cuphead in the "safest" possible method, by which I mean I equip the Smoke Ball and Chaser and focus more on avoiding enemy attacks than going for high damage and fast times. This method doesn't always work, since they don't apply for the airborne bouts, but it's the one t...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I'm ranked #44 on the Global Neon Rankings for the Switch version of Neon White . What a weird experience. I love the earlier levels, the one where there are few variables and as such the challenge is finding the best way to use each element. But as the game progresses and you start getting Soul Car...

Re: Books completed (and general book talk)

I recently finished The Trees by Percival Everett, and wish my biggest takeaway had to do with the thematic elements the book interweaves with dark humor rather than "this book has a lot of typos in it." Is that, like, a thing nowadays? The last few books I've read that were written in the...

Re: 545: Nintendo Land

On the one hand, Nintendo Land is a game that is far meatier than one would anticipate, allowing for both quick bursts of fun, longer and more rewarding content, and multiplayer that sells the concept of "this console is a DS with a movable touch screen" in a fairly straightforward fashion...
