Re: Games Completed 2024

Was always a bit intimidated by Last Blade given its emphasis on patience and waiting for the right moment to strike, goes against a lot of my instincts in these kind of games. Would you recommend any character as being particularly beginner-friendly?

Re: Bad game openings

All Pokemon games from the 3DS era right up to roughly Sword and Shield had an awful habit of railroading the first 5 hours of the game, with Gen 6 & 7 constantly ripping control from the user to show mechanics the player would've probably long since figured out. The Meowth cry from Gen 7 still ...

Re: All things Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku)

Mainlined the story in 5 as just wanted to move onto 6 and drop the multi-character game. Was grateful to get back to the Kiwami engine in 5, but hitting it beat-to-beat has to be up there as one of the more exhausting gaming experiences I've ever put myself through. Granted, I totally played it the...

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

it's great to see a game's systems being exploited, and my policy with single player games is play it however you want to play it, but damn, it's strange seeing people take such a stately and beloved franchise and make it feel a Reddit thread. Funny thing is, as entertaining as it's been to see ran...

Re: Games Completed 2023

Fell in love with the GBA Klonoa games last year, the 2nd one ramps up the challenge a bit. The Wonderswan one is a banger too.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Guessing I'll try something like Horizon Chase Turbo to scratch the same itch. Have you tried Hotshots Racing? It's pretty decent if you are after an arcade racer. Currently an absurd £2.39 on Switch. I paid about a tenner a while back and had fun with it. https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-...

Hated it, felt railroaded from the start. Did buy the HD version last week so hoping I gel with it a bit more this time.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Uninstalled 80's Overdrive from my Switch as it just got too frustrating for what it was, it expects a bit too much grinding for something that works best when you're dipping in and out. Guessing I'll try something like Horizon Chase Turbo to scratch the same itch. Well, that, or just go back to Out...

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

It got a 10 in this month's Edge, which is out this week. It's only the 6th game in 30 years that received maximum scores from both Famitsu and Edge. The others are: Ocarina of Time Bayonetta Skyward Sword GTAV Breath of the Wild. The presence of Skyward Sword on that list serves only to undermine ...

Re: Handheld emulation devices?

Too late to the party, but big fan of my Anbernic RG351MP, but it caps out at PS1-era stuff into GBA with a touch of PSP. Believe the latest Retroid Pocket (3+, I think?) does a respectable showing for itself up to DC with some GCN and PS2 support. I find Taki Udon and Retro Game Corps to be invalua...

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Just curious, did anybody switch the voice acting to Japanese? I don't love Zelda's English voice, but I haven't heard her speak since I switched to Japanese. I know I could look it up online but I'm looking forward to naturally hearing her and Ganondorf speak for the first time (again). Yeah I swi...

Re: A thread of the greatest game mechanics of all time...

The parry in the Street Fighter 3 series adds a level of depth to the game that fundamentally has you second guessing every Street Fighter instinct you've ever had.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Ended up getting sucked into Animal Crossing: New Leaf of all things despite having the, I'm told, superior New Horizons to hand. Incredibly absorbing game for something so ostensibly simply, it's not often you find a game where the hours kind of melt away like this. Also balancing Yakuza 6 which I'...

Re: Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Is it petty to dislike this game on the principle they skipped out on a Code Veronica remake? :P I like RE4 well enough, but I have ZERO enthusiasm for this game. The original still exists, and still holds up pretty well... And this remake doesn't seem to really be changing things up at all. It's n...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Not to sidestep the narrative issues around TLOU2 but I daresay they would be a lot more palatable if they weren't bolted onto a game that's, at least, 10ish hours too long. The final product really could've done with an editor that had at least heard the expression "kill your darlings."

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Also playing Yakuza 5 having tapped out twice on it. Have only just made it to the last character. It's usual Kiwami-era quality. It's pretty much 4 games in 1 and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes you're just not in the mood of that craic.

Preach. I often make the argument that if you are set up with a PS2 and a 3DS (with the DS library, obvs) then you're pretty much set for life. Both of them have stupidly deep libraries.

Whack of exclusives to hoover up in the interim. Got my eyes on Level 5's Guild releases and probably Denpa-Men as well, if anyone has any recommendations for either 3DS/Wii U shops.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

After finishing Sonic Frontiers, I gave Sonic Adventure 2 a shot... I know this game is beloved by a lot of folks, so I won't be too rough on it, but this has absolutely not aged well. Steam version looks and runs great, but yeah. Between the goofy music choices, the lousy controls, the awful, awfu...

Re: Videogame Deals

Few Atlus RPGs going for absolute pennies on the PAL 3DS eShop. Persona Q and whatnot for 4 euro kind of cheap.
