Re: Shmups

These ridiculously high skilled rapid-fire updates are giving me an inferiority complex.

Re: Games Completed 2019

I might have taken too long a break from it myself, I think I'll struggle to get back into it now. No, you won't! It's like riding a bike, I promise. 3 minutes in, you're like: "This is absolutely incomprehensible, how did I ever manage to get this far??" One hour in, you're like: "shtick shtack bo...

Re: Survival Games

Frostpunk (if we can call that a survival game) or Subnautica might be a more directed experience, and more in your wheelhouse IMHO. That said, for 5 EUR, I couldn't tell anyone not to get TLD. Frostpunk is on my radar, but I was under the impression it was more of a slightly different genre? (My i...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Theory: you love your AAA games, or at least games with Triple A production values - they are your natural metier. However, you have not come to terms with their hollow core, their inherent boringness and need to play it safe, their lack of a soul. I'm just messing around; I don't want to hav...

Re: Games Completed 2019

After months and months of steady incremental progress, I've finally solved the last Infinifactory puzzle in a grueling multi-hour (fasting) session a few days ago. I thought for sure this one was ever so slightly above my skill level last time I took a break from the game, so it felt like a weight ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Now that is a graph! Meanwhile, I've gone back to the God of War reboot, this time on NG+ on the highest difficulty. I like this game a lot. I also think it's very flawed in many respects. But it has a... sincerity that is doing wonders for me and making me overlook a lot of the issues I would...

Re: Survival Games

I have an interest in survival games in and of themselves, but most of those I'm familiar with seem to adopt a very free and open-ended gameplay structure which is often at odds with my, admittedly, rather narrow preferences in that regard. Obviously I'm not counting survival horror and other orient...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Really sorry mate, but what did I do wrong here? :( Honestly, it feels like you’re over-analysing what I’m saying, applying it in the wrong context - then digging me out about it. SCART is cheaper, more readily available and for me - gives the better reliable performance overall of the RGB options....

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Yes, and you're absolutely correct when it comes to the advantage of SCART over composite on a CRT! I agree with all of that, you've explained it very well. The only reason I'm frustrated is that you also insisted that SCART was the superior choice over component on a modern TV, even though it's a d...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Nick, I think we're talking completely past one another here! If you have a PS2 and the two cables lying around, I'd recommend you try it yourself firsthand. Don't forget to switch between RGB and YPbPr in the menu if you do so. Interested to hear the result! I have, and I have. I have an official S...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Hmmmm, I’m not going to agree with that - in my experience, SCART has always delivered a sharper image over anything else. I looked around a bit and component seems to be the more popular answer here. This Eurogamer thread says component is crisper, although that one is less conclusive. :? brMW6KFu...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Thanks KSub and Suits for the headscratching advice! You're really selling this whole retro gaming thing to me. :? Oh yeah, sorry about that. That was mostly my fault for not really answering the original question properly and us then getting sidetracked with all the technical talk. To make a long ...

I might submit my Ikaruga Chapter One Normal Mode S Rank for next year.
GDQ isn't for stand-up comedy gigs, though.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've never played a Metroid game. Are they really difficult? Yes, and the old ones in particular don't hold your hand whatsoever. I would recommend staying away from the very first one (NES). Super Metroid on the other hand is an absolute classic, although it might be tough to get through for many ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Okay. Thanks for elaborating, mate. :) So #1 is basically a phony solution. Not just in my head after all! I think the reason you swear by direct SCART and I prefer component is probably because I haven't played on a CRT in a while. So if ThirdMan wants to keep using his CRT he should probably follo...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Everyone will have their own preference as to what they prefer to look at. O bviously! :P All I'm saying is that there might be some tangible quality differences between the various options, even though I'm not 100% sure as to what those might be, exactly. 1. I own a bunch of SCART adapter blocks w...
