Re: All things DOOM

Okay, so DOOM then... I've been a handheld / console player all my life, which means that I've been missing out on a lot of PC-based genres over the years, including fast-paced arcade-style FPSs. I've never played the original DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem, Unreal Tournament or any others of that ilk. Ins...

Re: All things Metal Gear (Solid)

people like my mother were telling me how they watched him on tv, it was kind of surreal. Hahaha! This reminds me of when I went to one of his autograph session in Hamburg during the MGS4 press tour (nine years ago, how time flies...). It was indeed a lot of fun just standing in line for hours with...

Re: Videogame News

The whole thing is nasty, but it's the behavior of Sony's HR department I find to be particularly revolting. If someone comes to you in need of help and support, how amoral do you have to be to immediately fire them, try to buy off their silence, and (by the look and sound of it) possibly blacklist ...

Re: Help Identifying Old Arcade Game

This isn't much to go on... Do you remember if the gameplay was more akin to something like Castlevania, or perhaps closer to beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage? Was the visual design realistic or more stylised? Was the setting gothic, western, sci-fi? Edit: As a wild guess, could it be Magician Lord...

Re: Super optimistic sales

I'm far from a fighting game expert, but I would imagine that the pre-PS4 DualShock controllers would be very ill-suited for the genre on account of the imput lag caused by the analog buttons. I certainly notice the difference and tend to avoid playing arcade-style twitch reaction-based games on the...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Looking back on Edge’s perfect 10 list there’s Mario 64, and both the Galaxy games. But not sunshine. Fair 😛 Enough with the Sunshine hate already! :P Exams are horrid. The amount of emphasis people put on them is plain wrong. We have employed so many people at our design studio who didn't get the ...

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (21.10.17): The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

I have to admit that your post, and the overall cultural conversation (or lack thereof) it takes place in, is making me really sad. Gender identity and dynamics are some of the most important issues we're facing as a society, but it feels to me as if the well has already been poisoned so much that i...

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (21.10.17): The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

I came here just to say that, regardless of anyone's positions about any of the game's subjects, I love reading these type of discussions! Keep them coming, as long as they're respectful, as objective as possible and insightful, of course. I wholeheartedly agree, but I have to point out that this d...

The Great CaR Secret Santa 2018!

With the holiday season almost upon us, I thought it'd be a good idea to organize some sort of Secret Santa for the Cane and Rinse community. For those of you who don't know what that entails, it's a communal event where people exchange presents semi-anonymously, each participant being secretly assi...

Re: Videogame Criticism

I agree that TLoU's ending was great in all its weight and ambiguity and that the game certainly didn't need a sequel. But I'm kinda curious to see what ND have in store for TLoU2. Within moderation, of course.

Re: All things DOOM

I recently bought DOOM on account of the praise it's been getting around these parts. I wish I could tell how much I enjoyed playing the game, but I was instead greeted by a 30.021 GB update which is apparently going to take several hours to complete. I sure do miss the days of buying finished, prop...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Don't have a Switch (yet), but as a fan of the series, I may end up buying it just to be on the safe side in case it becomes rare and expensive later on. Not that excited about the game itself, though, if I'm to be perfectly honest. I'm sure it'll be a fun Musou in its own right, it's just not reall...

Re: Videogame Criticism

I'm glad you like the game so much, Todinho, but I completely disagree about the specific issues associated with TLoU being present in 99% of third-person shooters. In fact, I would argue that both Uncharted and TLou are quite unique in how artificial and shallow all of their systems are being desig...

Re: Videogame Criticism

Oh sure, it's tense and atmospheric. But that's more due to the passive flow and direction than to the mechanical interaction itself. I think you'd be surprised how little would be lost if it was all replaced by a series of QTEs.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Well, I'm always impressed with the way the Dead Space games manage to renounce a conventional HUD by relying exclusively on in-universe elements, like the energy meter on the back of the power suit or the ammo counter on the gun and stuff like that. I don't think that the menus not magically pausin...

Re: Videogame Criticism

I watched it yesterday and I agree with the gist of what he's saying. Consumers aren't directors and design by popular demand completely stifles creativity. Not everything is for everyone, and I don't see anything wrong with that. Challenging, demanding games are designed that way for a reason, and ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

While we're on the subject, I'll give a shoutout to Burnout Revenge. The single-player is fantastic, and unlike some, I didn't have any issue with the traffic checking mechanic. But it's the multiplayer that really grabbed me like no other racing game before or since. Not the kind of game you would ...
