Re: Shmups

Put a few more hours into it. The different shot types in 1.5 are really interesting. Reco Normal is the classic all-rounder. Reco Abnormal is as weird as a platypus due to its Focus shot actually accelerating the ship instead of slowing it down. My brain doesn't work like that so I had to bid it fa...

Re: Shmups

Really pleased to hear you've got a copy and I'll hope to hear a few more thoughts once you've had chance to get stuck in. Thanks! And yeah, I'm gonna have to sit down sooner rather than later for this one. It's the kind of game that just demands to be played . But I'm loving it already. I suspecte...

Re: Shmups

My Ketsui & Co. are still stuck in customs for some inscrutable reason, but I managed to grab myself a physical copy of Mushihimesama Futari in the meantime. Now that is a video game . :o Cute presentation, pumping soundtrack, intimidating bosses, and those patterns! Sublime. It's also surprisingly ...

Re: E3 2019 - Conference times and general chat

I have a (completely unsubstantiated, of course) pet theory that a good number of pre-event "leaks" are actually a cleverly disguised marketing strategy organized by the publishers in order to gain and judge public interest for their upcoming product and making sure everybody tunes in for the "offic...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I found Code: Veronica harder (and less fair in places) than either 2002 or Zero. Yes, that's a good candidate but it's mostly because the game is trying to screw you over at every turn rather than having a properly thought out but demanding set of mechanics like REmake. REmake is the epitome of "p...

Re: Shmups

The game changer was actually a couple of hours on Maniac Mode and getting to stage 4 with a hell of a lot more madness and bullets and absurd cancels and dodging through walls. Made going back to Original Mode seem a lot slower and less intense. Are we talking 1.5 or Black Label here? Because afaI...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Is it just me, or is the Resident Evil remake really bloody hard compared to the original? Yes, REmake (and Zero) are arguably the most challenging classic RE games due to the more restrictive inventory management and lack of cheesing opportunities. It often feels like you only have time to squeeze...

Frostpunk is coming to PS4 and XONE 'later this year'.
Great news. One of the very few PC style strategy games that interests me, and my stone age laptop obviously can't run it. Looking forward to it!

Re: Shmups

I have a bit on my plate at the moment and don't have much to add, but it's always great to read the enthusiasm here. I hope you like your new stick, Haze. I might have something to "announce" at some point next week. Depending on how slow the posting service decides to be this time around. Been abs...

Re: Shmups

Any recommendations on PS4? Only one I have really is Astebreed on that which I'm saving. I've seen Jamestown mentioned, any good? Apologies if you already have any of those, I can't remember if you ever said so. My PS4 shmups folder includes the following that I would recommend: Vertical : Ikaruga...

Re: Shmups

DoDonPachi Resurrection is intense. I'm starting to get more involved in the different ships and styles and the intricacies of the combo system, and it's quite the experience. I'm at the point where I'm seeing some actual improvements with every new run, which is very satisfying. Kicking myself for ...

Re: Shmups

Aaaah okay, now that makes perfect sense. Thank you very much. I was staring at the graph for a good five minutes asking myself "but what exactly do those vertical & horizontal bars represent??". So basically, while the input covers a 360 degrees angle, the physical inner workings of the arcade stic...

Re: Shmups

At the risk of outing myself as a complete imbecile, I don't really understand the logic behind the partitioning on the graphic. Shouldn't the yellow middle part (is that the deadzone?) be round? And if it were round, wouldn't all 8 other sections automatically be of the same size? :? Maybe arcade s...

Re: Shmups

I think the newer versions of the F500 come with an additional octagonal gate, and I plan on installing it sooner rather than later. I adore it on the GC pad. It's great to be able to lock into both straights and diagonals, but it also allows for smoother quasi-circular motions than a square or diam...

Re: Microsoft Xbox news and discussion thread

the problem we have, generally, is that we want to play all the new hot games out week per week rather than scrolling through a bunch of "old stuff" in a similar fashion to netflix. As a collective, we need to stop acting like a game isn't worth playing because it's been out for more than a month. ...

Re: Shmups

I'd just go for it, myself. Get it from amazon or something so you can send it back if you're not happy. Thanks, man. I think that's what I'll do. I was hesitant to go for the regular F500 considering its standard components were supposed to be of below average quality (and I wasn't looking forward...

Re: Shmups

...Well, I'm still eyeing the F500. At least this guy on the shmups forum seems pretty happy with his purchase. My initial plan was to buy a replacement LS-32 and put it in there, plus maybe some Sanwa buttons while I'm at it. Input lag is less than ideal, but I doubt I would be too bothered by it u...

Re: Our Patreon

It’s not always all Jesus juice and cupcakes, just privately acknowledge it and move on. I hear you, but I think the working assumption here is that folks like this aren't honest actors and are using coded language tied to wider cultural issues that end up causing actual harm to people. It can be a...
