Re: Retro gaming

Anyone know if the original Karnov has ever seen a re-release in a compilation or digital download? I'm seeing it for the first time in this Nintendo chronology, and I absolutely want to play this. Who owns the rights to it these days?

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Played some more Metroid Prime 3 and uh... Yeah, is that rumoured Switch version gonna have controller support? Because these motion controls are driving me insane. I've gotten my WiiU partially working again, so it plays *most* Wii games now (but not all), so at least having Motion Plus with the im...

Re: Darius Cozmic Collection

I'd buy this, but it boggles the mind why they don't just release all the games in one collection, especially given the steep price. Darius Burst is a similar conundrum, as the game is ludicrously expensive at its base price, and there's hundreds of dollars of DLC on top of that. Whoever's managing ...

Re: Retro gaming

How are you capturing that footage off your Game boy? Ah, I’m not mate. It’s from the Castlevania Collection on Switch. I’m using the capture footage to Twitter, then downloading to YouTube. Mind, you could easily capture Game Boy footage like that if you wanted to. Super Game Boy, GBA player for G...

Re: Retro gaming

So I've been continuing my Chrontendo watch-through, and I'm up to the Famicom/NES games released through August 1987. For the first time, I've FINALLY seen a game where I'm like, "Yeah, that game legitimately look amazing." And that one was Mario 2 and/or Doki Doki Literature Panic. But that's also...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Wolfenstein, the newer ones, are really hard to recommend. The first one is BETTER from a gameplay standpoint, but it becomes a wave-based shooter with VERY few checkpoints pretty quickly. The story is fantastic, but the gameplay... Honestly, not much to write home about. It's not bad, but I found i...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've legit had lots of dreams about games - some just using fragmentary elements, some total experiences. Perhaps the scariest one I've had in recent memory was last year, when I had an Apex Legends dream in first person. But I was physically there. And the danger was very real. I was hiding in the ...

Re: Retro gaming

Hello fellow gamers, Does anyone know of a good technical documentary - video preferred, but written is fine too - that explains how so many Famicom Disk games wound up being ported to the Western NES (which didn't have disk support)? I know the Famicom/NES was a potato from a technology standpoint,...

Re: Retro gaming

That's super interesting RE the NES. So you're essentially able to go way past the console's capability. Kinda-sorta. If you think about it in ultra-distilled terms, the connection between system and cartridge is merely a transfer of I/O - inputs and outputs. So long as you're supplying sufficient ...

Re: Retro gaming

I've started watching this really interesting series called Chrontendo, which is a chronological review of every single NES/Famicom game, well, in order of release. Now I typically don't have much reverence for NES games, like, at all. For me, I think the NES is simply too primitive - if I were 10 y...

Re: Top 25 Shmups of All Time (Shmups Forum)

Einhander is very good, but it's also very different. Its absolute most important element is the music - it's phenomenal. But more specifically, it's how the music is so perfectly cammed to the pace of the game - it cuts in and out at precisely the right moment, and there's one section in particular...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I dipped on Control after watching some reviews, because it seems like even the "payoff" is not something I'm especially interested in.

I started playing Metroid Prime 3 though and you know what? Freaking excellent. I'm going in totally blind, and it's surprising me. Not at all what I expected.

Re: Top 25 Shmups of All Time (Shmups Forum)

I don't feel that I've done a deep enough dive into SHMUPs to make a Top 25, but for sure, I prefer the old-school style (the ones before bullet hell). Some of my favourites include: - Einhander (easily my favourite SHMUP) - Thunder Force 4 - every single Raiden game not called Raiden III or Raiden ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I rented Control and.... I have no idea what to think. It plays well, but 2 hours in I'm getting massive "style over substance" vibes. Everything happening on the screen is cool, but it lacks the context to make it meaningful. Everything is conveyed with this deliberately vague narrative, and it's r...

Re: Laptop Suggestions?

Anyone have any experience with e-typewriters? I've seen them marketed under the Freewrite brand, but they're these e-ink screens just JUST do word processing - it's meant to be like a distraction-free writing tool. I want one for my political meetings and events. But I know nothing about them outsi...

Re: Successful Spiritual Successors

The Metro series is a spiritual successor to the STALKER games that, IMHO, surpass the source material. Really? The Stalker games were big open world almost RPGs, other than a similar theme I wouldn't say they're that similar really. I'd suggest Fallout and Stalker are more closely related in my ex...

Re: Successful Spiritual Successors

The Metro series is a spiritual successor to the STALKER games that, IMHO, surpass the source material. Freedom Planet was a great spiritual successor to Sonic until Mania came along. Bug Fables is an excellent spiritual successor to Paper Mario. I'm sure I'll think of more, but those are off top of...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I'm not even worried about the number of monsters, I actually like a trimmed roster is a great idea - forces you to use different ones, which I like. My primary issue was how there's no post-game. You just beat the 8 gyms, and that's pretty much it. That's abnormal for Pokemon games. That, paired wi...

Re: Cyberpunk 2077

Presuming the usual Autumn rush for third parties, the end of the year is now piling up with big games though. Going through the list of my anticipated releases, the Fall was completely empty for me - save for some TBA titles like No More Heroes 3 that may or may not launch this year. It seems like...
