Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I am really not a fun of the obnoxiously bright colours the NES in particular produces. Ha, that's really interesting you mention that. As I was playing Super Mario Bros 2 on NES it reminded me of something I've always thought about the console - just how muted and drab the pale colour palette seem...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I started playing Mega Man 3 and 4. On Gameboy. Through 3DS virtual console. And you know what? I think I actually *prefer* them to the NES versions. Which sounds really weird on paper, but something about the monochrome colour scheme just works better for the graphics, IMHO. I am really not a fun o...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Also, Sengoku (3) is definitely cool and worthy of attention, but the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle brawler collection even more so in my opinion. Warriors of Fate, Armored Warriors and Battle Circuit are all absolute doozies, and you can get the whole seven game compilation for about half the price of...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Battle circuit is the one with the street fighter style special moves isn’t it? Fireball motions and suchlike? It has a handful of them, yeah. It's a neat experiment, but I feel like it didn't have quite the budget or time in the cooker to be something truly special. Good game, just not what it cou...

Re: Games Completed 2020

#8 - Battle Circuit (Capcom Beat 'Em Up Collection) This is a beat 'em up. It's fine. It has a cool progression system where you buy upgrades. Mechanically, it's just kinda fine. Like most beat 'em ups, I found myself kinda getting bored of the button mashing after a while. But this one's got an abs...

Re: Retro gaming

Can someone explain the Vectrex to me? Let me provide some context... I'm watching a video wherein the narrator is reviewing ever Vectrex game, presumably through an emulator. But I'm absolutely amazed at this machine. I understand that vector displays and raster displays are fundamentally different...

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

I'm having a lot of difficulty justifying maintaining my PS+ subscription after this period. The games over the last year have not been great; some months feel like they just picked a couple of games from the Wal-Mart $20 or less bin and called 'er a day. And when their excuse for axing PS3 and PSV ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've been playing Trials of Mana the past few days and uh... Holy shit is it ever a great game. This is a remake done right (not you, FF7R), where the core combat, story, pacing, music, etc. are more or less the same, but modernized beyond the technical limitations of the original. The art direction...

Re: Games Completed 2020

#7 - Azure Striker Gunvolt I wasn't expecting to play this game, but I up and decided to upgrade to the Switch version and... I'm kinda glad I did? The improved resolution and bigger screen makes the game a lot more fun to play. Unlike the Mega Man Zero series, I found Gunvolt to be a pretty fair di...

Re: Royal Mail's 2020 video game stamps

I could see a modicum of controversy with GTA being on a public stamp... Certainly, the crusty old conservative types would have a rant over such a thing. It'd be interesting to see what Canada would do for a similar set of stamps, as Canadian-made games are often overshadowed by their international...

Pac-Man Championship Edition is indeed free here in Canada (and presumably the US) starting at 1pm EST through May 10 EST.

Available at 1pm EST (so 30 minutes from this post being made).

Hitman GO also free on Android and iOS until Apr. 27th.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Is CDKeys a sketchy graymarket reseller like G2A though? Because I know there are a lot of sites like G2A out there. I'd never use them myself. Unless it's to buy Windows. :x I'm sorry, but $300+ for an OS is absurd to me.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I'm not sure that I have much interest in actually *making* Mario Maker levels, but the new update for Mario Maker 2 made me instantly buy a copy. The addition of *worlds* is the missing ingredient I didn't know I needed. It's surprisingly cheap to buy online too; I got a brand new copy for $73 (MSR...

Re: All things Mega Man

Legends! One of my gaming white whales. I didn't have a Playstation until PS2, and ever since I've wanted to try games from this sub-series. Wasn't possible. Years later, I heard they were available on the US PSN for PS3 so I waited for them to arrive on the UK store. And waited. And waited. I wond...

Re: All things Mega Man

Mega Man X was one of my first video games, period, having first played it at my cousins' house at age 4 or 5 - the same cousins as mentioned in my Aladdin commentary on the podcast - so I obviously have some degree of nostalgic bias but... That game remains infinitely playable to me. It's the only ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Still hammering away at FF7, but I also started Azure Striker Gunvolt - a game I'd bought and nearly finished on the 3DS, but never quite did. The 3DS copy of the "Striker Pack" physical release is surprisingly pricey, so I listed my copy on eBay and picked up the marginally more expensive Switch ve...

Re: What's Out This Week?

Assuming Trials of Mana isn't padded out to hell and back like FF7R was - and nothing in the demo or press coverage indicates it will be - it's actually a pretty short play for the genre. The original is maybe around 20 hours long, and it doesn't have much idle time.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've been playing the original FF7 with heavy mod support, and while it's got some stability issues (crashed 3 times for me today), I'd say it's the best way to experience FF7, period. I think I would have much preferred a shot-for-shot remake, because the original still holds up remarkably well. It...

Re: What's Out This Week?

I'm not really up to date on this, maybe somebody can fill me in. The Secret of Mana remake that came out a few years ago wasn't all that great, right? But the Collection of Mana that came out a bit later for Switch was a compilation of the three original games (including Secret & Trials), which fa...

Re: What's Out This Week?

I am SUPER excited for Trials of Mana, words can't describe. My birthday's on the 26th, so I'm hoping I can get the game before then.

That Predator game seems interesting too, although not something I'd buy day one.
