Re: What's Out This Week?

I want Rage 2, but I don't full price want it. I do have $77 in credit at a game shop down in Mississauga though... hmmst. Lemme finish Ys VIII and decide after that. I'm tempted to go to Yakuza 0 (half done, been a year since last played) or Dawn of Sorrow next.

Re: Wario Land 3

Wouldn't it be neat if Nintendo's Virtual Console purchases actually transferred between consoles and buying games didn't require a fucking spreadsheet?

Re: Retro gaming

Garage sale hunting became a really big problem in Ontario. A bunch of game collectors would literally camp out neighbourhood garage sales in advance and buy up everything so they could re-sell it. It was like an industry. I know Ivan, the guy who runs Toyratt in Milton (he has a reputation in GTA g...

Re: Retro gaming

I'll never understand how people get these thrift store finds. Every time I look, the shops know exactly what things are worth. My brother and I found a copy of Earthbound at a Value Village, torn label, they wanted $150.

Re: Wario Land 3

If you haven't played it, I really recommend the Virtual Boy Wario game. I watched a Let's Play on a greyscale emulator, and it's completely playable in 2D - and it looks fun as hell. I'm REALLY hit-and-miss when it comes to Nintendo games, but this one seems like a big winner.

Hey, if my government can piss in the wind and get paid $173k per MP to do it, I can do it for free. :P

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I still espouse the unpopular opinion that Mega Man 5 has the best soundtrack of the original Meger Mang games. Especially that godly remixed version for the Anniversary Collection (ommited from the Legacy Collection for some goddamn reason), which it the primary reason one should own the Anniversar...

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

So even if all the episodes came out to rave reviews you wouldn’t buy it because it’s episodic? I don’t understand that at all. And even when the whole thing was out and discounted? I don’t believe that. If it's digital only, I think it's extremely unlikely I'd buy it til a proper disc comes out. I...

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

(Also - few people seem to remember this, but Disc 1 of FF7 was about 60% of the game... Only reason it's a 3-disc game is because of the cutscene dump on discs 2 and 3.)

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

I mean, if you're gonna chop FF7 into segments, that doesn't preclude it from being open world... Not that it ever really WAS, I mean, more so than FF6 was, FF7 is a very linear game with a few detours. Yeah, it has a big, open field, but in general, you were bee-lining from place to place for like ...

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

If a game is episodic, why would I *not* wait for the full version? Episodic releases are a stupid waste of time. They make sense for small indie studios who can only work on small sections at a time, but Square-Enix is not hurting for cash. There's no reason for it to be episodic, short of extortio...

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread

FF7R looks mostly fantastic. The colour palette is dead-on, which is one of the most important things about that game. I really like the look of most of the art, except maybe Barrett's design which feels a little off to me. I love the character swapping mechanic, something I've been loving to bits i...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Had a thought about Ys VIII today - Despite its seemingly low budget (the graphics and animation are almost PS2 era stuff, and there aren't all that many music tracks), it's really a testament to how games can still be great and tell huge, epic stories without spending Anthem money. I am so thorough...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I started playing Ys VIII and... Holy heckin bananas, this game is EXCELLENT. I had a fear it would be yet another by-the-numbers JRPG with a good soundtrack but boring gameplay and very slow story... but it's not. It's basically Gilligan's Island with anime characters, and the mechanics are just......

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Was James Pond popular in the UK? Because I've heard it reminisced over on the Internet, but it's kind of treated as shovelware over here. I remember seeing them in bargain bins, and I've never heard anyone talk about the series in my own circles - Social media or IRL. Is it one of those things from...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I'm not 100% sure what all's on the Switch, but I can def recommend Iconoclasts, because I do know that one is. Probably the best Metroidvania I've played -- though it's a bit more linear and a lot for story-driven than, say, Super Metroid.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

X is a funny beast. I think the art design of the planet itself is absolutely incredible. Whereas I hated the character design, music, lack of story, enemies, menus and combat all felt like massive backsteps after XC1. X has loads more in common with BOTW than XC1 or 2. But despite all that, I rate...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I bought Xenoblade Chronicles X for Wii U for not a lot of money and decided to throw it in for a quick impression... And now I can't stop playing it! Not even sure why. Maybe it's the Breath of the Wild DNA in reverse? Interesting you say that, because in retrospect, I disliked both games -- for v...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Gave up on Monster Boy probably 80% of the way through because the level design became a little too bullshit for my liking (lots of cheap deaths you can't see coming until you've died, lots of really poorly designed platforming, etc.). Very good game, and I'd recommend it for folks who like Metroidv...
