Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I usually 'power through' a game when I've got fed up of it and just want to reach the end. Well, I wouldn't actually disagree with that assessment. The game has a lot to be fed up about. Although I would add a "enamored by the majestic beauty of the piece and motivated to see it through"...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Currently powering through The Last Guardian. I'm very touched.

I'll try and write down my thoughts in the podcast thread as soon as possible after finishing it while the experience is still fresh in my mind.

Mini-documentary from VICE about a subject I'm becoming increasingly interested in: video game conservation.
Well worth a watch.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I'm hoping I like the game, especially since I only have PC and can't play the Uncharted series. Just in case you don't know, there are actually quite a few small but meaningful design differences between Uncharted and the Tomb Raider reboot. It's not uncommon at all for people to strongly prefer o...

Re: 336: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

Okay, let me clarify what I meant. You can't complain old films are harder to watch than new ones, because they are objectively not. The same does not apply for games. You are correct in the sense that other (passive) forms of media do not have any physical execution barriers that can get in the way...

Re: 313: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (Biohazard 3: Last Escape)

I think it is very much a testament of my love for the classic Resident Evil series that even though I consider RE3 to be the weakest of the bunch, I've thoroughly enjoyed every one of my many playthroughs. If I had to summarize my issues with this game, I would say that a lot of its defining featur...

Re: 349: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (Biohazard 7: Resident Evil)

Just out of interest did you play it in VR? Also if it wasn’t called resident evil 7 would you feel the same? (Pointless question because it is but I’d be interested to know) I did not play it in VR. If the game wasn't a mainline RE game, I would probably find it just as bland, but I also would not...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Yeah, the game is in dire need of a re-release on current platforms, but I suppose the disappointing sale numbers of its initial release aren't exactly making this a priority for the publisher.

If it's an option for you, maybe consider the recent 60fps PC port?

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Funny thing happened last night. I decided to finally check out Max Payne 3 on my dusty 360, but I couldn't get into it whatsoever, unfortunately. The presentation style has some very interesting elements, but I found the controls to be oddly unresponsive and the gameplay rather unsatisfying as a re...

Re: 349: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (Biohazard 7: Resident Evil)

All right, let's do this. The classic games in the series were eventually lambasted for overstaying their welcome and their lack of innovation, despite being based on a delightfully structured and mentally demanding design philosophy that was quite unique among AAA titles. And when it came out, Resi...

Re: 336: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

I think I can say it's hard to replay, whilst also having really enjoyed it at the time and knowing how massively influential it has been. I can absolutely empathise with why you love this game! Within whats its trying to do it is very very well executed, I can absolutely appreciate the craft. But ...

Re: 310: BioShock Infinite

Of course, if you disagree with me about the reason Irrational did the game that way that's fine, I want to see what you guys/gals think about it. I think it was partly out of the cynical business mentality you've described, and partly because the writers were rightfully denouncing the fundamentall...

Re: All things Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku)

There is no skill or technique involved, it's simply dodging and hammering away at attack until they die, making sure you heal as required. And if you're going in to a boss fight without a full stock of recovery items then forget about it, because all the fight is, is a matter of whether you have e...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've only got experience with the Wii U version (Neo) and my quick take is: looks like WipEout, plays like F-Zero. The track designs and controls/handling aren't quite on F-Zero levels (then again, what is), but they have tried very hard, with a worthwhile futuristic racer as a result. They even go...

Interesting Extra Credits episode about the whole situation. And the ending seems to suggest that certain drastic regulations might be coming soon! I can totally see both sides of this issue, so I'm curious to see how it will all play out.

Re: Games Completed 2018

Good call on Split Second/Velocity. As an avid arcade racing fan myself, I don't think it quite reaches the heights of the other standout games in the genre such as F-Zero and Burnout, but it is indeed a wonderful little "almost-great" title. Tense moment-to-moment mechanical interaction a...

If you have a PS4 with PS+ and if you like video games, play Bloodborne (if you haven't already).

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Anyhow, it's a really solid and streamlined racer. It's very intense too, and better for short bursts than long sessions. It is a fast, twitchy game that requires a little nuance to master. Thank god for my shmupy gaming background! I don't know if you have any experience with the F-Zero franchise ...
