Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I'm not bothered about owning the physical games themselves - I let go of my physical media collecting mentality a few years ago. Buying physical actually feels pretty retro to me nowadays. For me it's purely a practical thing - the physical games are much cheaper, at least for now. Also a nice bonu...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I'd probably be 100% digital only were it not for two things; Amazon Prime's 20% pre-order discount on pretty much every title, and future potential resale value (Switch games tending to hold their value far more than the other consoles).

Re: Octopath Traveler

I don't understand why people are annoyed about this. Was the game sold on the premise that all the stories intertwined? (Genuinely asking...) I think it's a perfectly reasonable expectation given how heavily they are marketing the game as a sort of spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. How much...

Re: Octopath Traveler

And guess what? It turns out that it isn't true. From what I've read, without spoiling myself, there is a section at the end that *does* tie the stories together. It absolutely infuriates every time a JRPG comes because you can absolutely tell that reviewers always half ass it and never finish the ...

Re: Octopath Traveler

I played the demo and enjoyed it - having saved progress carry over to the main game is a very clever hook. I'm not a huge rpg fan, but I do like to play a JRPG once every five years or so, and this one sucked me in with the visual style. I almost cancelled my preorder after reading the Kotaku revie...

Re: Hollow Knight

I should say also that I don't mind challenging games at all, I often relish them. I just wrapped up a complete playthrough of DKC: Tropical Freeze, which is one of the toughest games I've played in recent years and I loved it. So it's not just that I'm butthurt that this game is tricky. But there's...

Re: Hollow Knight

What I've always found absolutely key to the appeal of Metroidvania games (and the Steam World Dig games in particular are an excellent example of this) is how you are constantly drip-fed upgrades which facilitate ever faster and smoother traversal of the map. The relative lack of this dynamism in H...

Re: Hollow Knight

I'm not loving this game as much as others seem to be, sadly. The scarcity of save points and fast travel points combined with the games tendency to throw very hard bosses at you with zero warning really starts to grate after a while. Often, the realisation when I (suddenly) die of just how much of ...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Yeah, could be wrong but I was under the impression that most of the initial cost is for the software part of the package, and you can purchase (or apparently create your own) replacement cardboard sets at a much lower cost? What intrigues me is how much leeway there is for true creativity. Like, ar...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I think people might be missing the point a little with this - isn't the whole point that these things are disposable? You build a few things, play around with it, then maybe upload a video of your creation to Youtube before chucking it all in the recycling. Certainly beats wasteful limited-use plas...

Re: Yooka-Laylee

Reviews I've seen for YL have been pretty brutal, sadly. Some say it's dated, others that it's an outright bad game... What had me worried in previews is when they talked about 'sprawling' levels, when by far the best (imo) Rare 3D platformer was the original Banjo Kazooie, which had relativel...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Don't know about anyone else, but that Nindies vid was extremely reassuring to me - lots of very promising looking titles in there. These are exactly the kinds of games I was hoping for on the Switch, and it boggles the mind that they didn't showcase any of them at the reveal event. Now if they anno...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Well, colour me very disappointed. Gut reaction is that the lineup is a flood of very niche, old-fashioned looking titles (with - literally - one or two promising gems), and that the Switch is destined to be an also-ran. Seems like once again, Nintendo are going off half-cocked. The likes of Sega, G...

Re: Star Wars

What I find ironic is that if you dig out some of the many negative reviews of Star Wars from 1977, you'll find many of the exact same criticisms (limp script, thin characterisation obscured by the breakneck pace and an over-reliance on set pieces and special effects) aimed today at Rogue One level...

Re: Star Wars

To elaborate; in the original Star Wars (and strictly ignoring anything we later learn in sequels, spin-offs etc), we have a clear idea of what Luke thinks of Han. We know what Leia thinks about Luke. We know what Han feels about Obi Wan and 3PO, and vice versa. Though the characters themselves are ...

Re: Star Wars

Hate to be a downer, but though it passed the time reasonably well, Rogue One didn't really work for me and it's not a film I feel the need to ever revisit. I think they made a good stab at it, and it had some neat visuals, but it just didn't really engage me on a plot or character level, and the fi...

Re: Super Mario Run

My point was though, that in my opinion, unlike in conventional Mario games, the levels simply aren't much fun to replay, and getting 'good' at the game simply requires learning every level through trial and error. Collecting the five coins, for example, just seems frustrating more than anything be...

Re: Super Mario Run

I think these levels are designed to be replayed a lot. They're very short for Mario levels (60 seconds or less) and you can compete against friends My point was though, that in my opinion, unlike in conventional Mario games, the levels simply aren't much fun to replay, and getting 'good' at the ga...
