Re: Books completed (2018)
Ooh, interesting. I'll seek that one out for sure.

Re: Books completed (2018)
I really enjoyed RP1, too. I definitely preferred the book to the film, but that's not to say it was a bad film. Just felt it was missing a first act. Anyway. Books. I finished the Lord of the Rings trilogy (plus The Hobbit) earlier this year. It was so, so good. Admittedly, it wasn't the best writt...

Re: Your Top 50 Games of All Time Lists
How are you guys able to rank these? I can't do it. SCIENCE! :geek: What I did was give each one a rating out of ten for gameplay, music, graphics, narrative, and lasting appeal. (There's a bit more to it than that, obvs.) Then fuddle around with decimal points so that I didn't have two in the same...

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)
Here's a nice track from Jazz Jackrabbit 2, one of my favourite games. It turned 20 last week, so it seems appropriate to throw it in there. Before we begin: I'd played the shareware demo of the first Jazz Jackrabbit to death and back. With that out of the way... The first time I played Jazz 2, it w...

Re: Your Top 50 Games of All Time Lists
Mine is a work-in-progress, on the grounds that there are a bunch of games I want to play that may yet make the list. (Also, I had to resort to the horrors of maths to rank them, otherwise there'd be 49 number 2's. A few surprises, but not ones I'd disagree with!) Doom II: Hell on Earth Halo: Combat...

Re: Sound of Play: 145
This was a great episode (and not just because my piece was picked). Very nice bit of unexpected, but not unwelcome, discussion. A further point about The Sims 2 and its storytelling: the game has a bunch of built-in features that facilitate making your own stories with your Sims. For example, each ...

Re: Sound of Play: 144
You need a decent microphone, some audio recording software and not to be too shy to talk to me about games music. That’s all really! Sounds good to me. I have at least two of the three credentials, anyway. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Phlum/Pixel-Emotes/master/PixelEmotesChromatic/thumbs_up.p...

Re: Sound of Play: 144
Mark Morgan seems to be a master of ambient music. He also did the soundtrack for the first two Fallout games (and part of New Vegas, by extension). Something I'd like to mention about Spyro: if you're playing them for the first time, definitely play them in order. I grew up with Year of the Dragon,...

Maybe a little late to the party on this one, but Worms Armageddon (the original PC version) with the latest patch works great online. Servers and everything.

Halo Online! (a.k.a. ElDewrito)
Back in 2015, Microsoft released the alpha version of Halo Online, a Russia-only freemium game based on a heavily modified Halo 3 engine. Shortly after its initial release, modders were quick to strip out the additives to give us a classic Halo experience for PC. This mod is known as ElDewrito, and ...

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)
I just recently started listening to Sound of Play. What a quality podcast. It's nice to hear music that I never would have otherwise, especially when it comes to obscure chiptunes from the Amiga and C64 (cheers, Leon). Anyway, here's my request. I'm always amazed at the power of nostalgia, since I'...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
I recently got a Super Nt, and playing Super Mario World on it has somehow been a different, more compelling, experience to playing it on Wii Virtual Console and through emulation on my PC.
Doesn't help that it's in Japanese, though.

Re: 317: Worms series
I'm trying to remember when I first discovered Worms. I know that I played Hogs of War first, which did 3D Worms before Worms 3D came along. As for the game in question, I remember going through a phase in around 2007-8 where I started to get into retro gaming, with Doom, Age of Empires and Super Ma...

Re: 320: Space Invaders
Out of curiosity, is the Super Game Boy version the same game as the SNES "Original Game" cartridge? 'Cause that's another version I've played quite a lot of. Speaking of versions, worth mentioning is the 1999 Activision-published game. I spent a lot of time with that game before playing A...

Re: 318: The Stanley Parable
I first played (and watched) The Stanley Parable in its original form as a Half-Life 2 mod. It was very interesting, but for no reason in particular, I didn't play that version too much. The full version, on the other hand, I've put a decent amount of time into - enough time to see a fair share of i...

Re: 312: Rampage
I also played Rampage in my childhood! Funny, that. It wasn't in the arcades, though, but on my PS2 as part of the Midway Arcade Treasures collection. Not really much to say on it, other than it's decent fun. I imagine it shines when playing with friends, but even if you're just playing alone, it's ...

Re: 320: Space Invaders
Space Invaders is one of those games that I keep in my back pocket. My first memory of it was when I was out with my dad somewhere, and we found an original cabinet. Sadly, I was far too small to even reach the controls. The first time I properly played it was on PlayStation 2, with Space Invaders A...
