Re: Retro gaming
Some quick shouts of cool PS1 games that won't break the bank are WipEout 2097, the Oddworld games, Heart of Darkness and Skullmonkeys. See if you can get Alundra as well, for not too much money. I've always low-key regretted trading in Skullmonkeys. It might not be groundbreaking as a platformer, ...

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast
Mega Man 11 could be interesting; I realize you left off with 2, but as much as I love 4 and 5, change has been so incremental in that series that going all the way to the newest one would be the most interesting, and bring you up to speed on all the mechanics added along the way.

Re: The Cane and Rinse podcast Volume 9 (2020)
We’re starting another epic new series this year, but the shows will be further apart. Right - it's guessing time! Everyone is allowed two picks, and we'll see who's right when the list is announced. If you can add some reasoning for your guesses, all the better. My two guesses are: Metroid series ...

Re: 399: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Donkey Kong Country Returns challenged me, in more ways than one. 2D platformers are my videogaming bread and butter, and based on its great reputation I bought DKCR to play on my 3DS in the spare hours of my impending paternity leave. Despite the games reputation I opted for Original Mode, because ...

GRANASABER from Grandia 2. Composer: Noriyuki Iwadare In terms of a main musical theme Grandia 2 has a lot to live up to, and while it may not be as iconic as its predecessor, it manages to evoke a similarly grandiose and adventurous feel. It also has passages invoking romance and looming darkness,...

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (28.9.19) - 389: Donkey Kong Country trilogy
I came late to Donkey Kong Country. As a 2D Nintendo platformer it should’ve been right up my alley, but despite several spirited attempts, I’ve never been able to get invested in the trilogy. Ironically, I think the visuals may have been a big part of it. What once looked cutting edge now gave the ...

Re: Your Top 50 Games of All Time Lists
My biggest surprise with this whole entertaining excersise is that Final Fantasy VI ranked so comparatively low. I personally don't care that much for it, but I was always under the impression that "common consensus" put it as the best in the series.

Its probably already on the list, but here goes anyway: Celeste ! It'd also personally be neat to hear you revisit the Kirby series; Much like Mega man it wouldn't be worthwile to go through them all, but perhaps Kirbys Dream Land through Kirbys Adventure and Kirby Superstar would would cover the so...

Re: Your Top 50 Games of All Time Lists
Although it didn't make my top 50, its nice to see some Final Fantasy V love in those lists. In terms of pure gameplay, I'd rank FFV as the best in the series. On top of that, its wrapped in an charmingly cheesy romp of a narrative that I can't help but adore. FFIX adds some gravitas to balance thi...

Like the breaking up of things into themed categories! Gives a bit of context! Some interesting choices as well. Not sure what it says about you that you find Bioshock fun and comforting, but different strokes for different folks ;) Hahaha, I've actually only ever played Bioshock once, so its defin...

Re: Your Top 50 Games of All Time Lists
I wasn't able to get 50 entries, and could only properly rank a few. But at least now my narrow gaming preferences should be embarrasingly obvious to see: 1: KLONOA: DOOR TO PHANTOMILE (PS1) Pretty happy with this order tier - 2: Undertale (PC) - 3: Final fantasy IX (PS1) - 4: Mega Man IV (gameboy) ...

...the clockwork gameplay, which is built to carry you through this rich world quickly and smoothly. I remain baffled by people who walked away because of the gambit system. It seems like the sort of quality of life improvement whose absence is so often lamented by critics of the series. Also, it’s...

Hollow Stairway B from Pandemonium, composed by Burke Trieschmann During my formative, platformer-obsessed gaming years, Pandemonium was an early PS1 favourite of mine. Revisiting the game recently I was curious if it held up, but like so many things tinted by nostalgia, I ultimately found it ...de...

Re: Our next Final Fantasy podcast recording (10.8.19) - 382: Final Fantasy XII
Note: This ramble is based on the vanilla FFXII experience Right from the start Final Fantasy XII felt off. Cactuars were unrecognizable. The fearsome Malboros were early-game scrubs. Classic summons appeared as random spaceships. Yet I might’ve embraced these tweaks to the iconography, if not for e...

Re: Our next podcast recording (24.6.19) - 375: Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong ‘94’
Donkey Kong 94 For the gameboy podcast, I stated that my ideal handheld game was a 2d platformer, had levels, a distinct presentation and some sort of context. DK 94 may be the platonic ideal of those criteria. In true Mario fashion the game has a seemingly endless supply of ideas, with new enemies...

Re: Our next Final Fantasy podcast recording (10.8.19) - 382: Final Fantasy XII
FFXII was a game which I beat while literally taking a shower, and singlehandedly killed my investment in the series. I will elaborate later, and am curious to hear the eventual discussion on this one in particular.

- Another interesting observation: In 2003 I played "Tales of Symphonia". A game that also had a story about a chosen maiden who was ready to sacrifice herself to save the world. I wonder whether it was a popular motif at the time? Also, of course, in 2016 "I am Setsuna" copied ...

Re: Our next Final Fantasy podcast recording (8.6.19) - 373: Final Fantasy X
I will join the chorus who had no problem with the Voice Acting of Final Fantasy X, and didn’t find Tidus annoying. The fact that I end up moved by Tidus and Yunas relationship and a feeling of melancholy must mean its done its job. I also found the fish-out-of water angle refreshing for the series,...

Re: Our next-but-one podcast recording (18.5.19) - 370: Ape Escape
In a way, Ape Escape was my Mario 64. Not that it was my first 3D platformer, that honor goes to Crash Bandicoot, but it expanded how exactly games could work. For one thing, the levels were mostly devoid of exits, and were instead defined by whatever order you caught the monkeys, culminating in tim...
