Re: 369: Disney's Aladdin

If you’d asked me in the 90’s which was better, the Genesis or the SNES version of Aladdin, I’d say it was a no-brainer. The Genesis one, obviously! I hadn’t played either, only seen the screenshots in magazines, and the beautiful, colorful Genesis sprites looked so much better than the small, muddy...

Re: Our next podcast recording (11.3.19) - 360: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is the only 3D Zelda I’ve ever finished. I had a great time doing almost everything; I would’ve gotten more seeds, but I found out the reward for doing so is a disappointing turd. BOTW was neat because it appeared to be an answer to what Zelda fans had been asking for for years. Nintendo, while...

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)

One of my favorite NES tracks is “The Beginning,” the killer piece from Stage 1 of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. The Famicom version of the game sounds much different due to the three extra sound channels of the VRC6 chip, and in particular the Famicom version of “The Beginning” sounds really aw...

Re: 329: Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2)(1993) Our next podcast recording (21.7.18) -

I was almost nine years old when Secret of Mana was released in the U.S., and although I didn’t play it at the time, I remember it being a big deal, as far as console releases go. Because its graphics, sound, and scope were cutting-edge for the time, the game was being covered in the Tech section of...

Re: Help Identifying Old Arcade Game

Oh, snap, you know what, I've been watching the gameplay of Magician Lord and now I think that may in fact have been it! Perhaps my imperfect brain changed the memory of a cape to a duster coat. Unless somebody comes along with some other suggestion that gives me a "BAM that's it!" moment,...

Re: Help Identifying Old Arcade Game

Thanks, all! If, again, this is a real game, it was closer to an Altered Beast style beat 'em up. I remember the color palette being more muted than Magician Lord but it was kind of like this and that was a super good guess given the paucity of information you had to work with!

Re: Our next podcast recording (15.10.17): Grim Fandango

I played Grim Fandango years after its release, as I tend to do with most games, and was really knocked out by the way its amazing music and unique visual aesthetic combined to create a movie-like experience. The combination of Dia De Los Muertos Mexican culture and film noir was not one that struck...

Help Identifying Old Arcade Game

I need the community's assistance to help me figure out if a memory I have is of a real game or if it's a figment or confabulation! I have a vague memory of an arcade game that I saw in the 90s, when I was a young child, while on vacation. I only saw this machine once, and don't know the name of the...

Re: The box art thread

I know this is an old thread but I had to bump it to ask -- is this real?

And if so, why isn't this all that anybody ever talks about? It's incredible.

Re: Final Fantasy (I) / Final Fantasy II

I decided to play the original Final Fantasy maybe a year or so after FFVII came out. I knew the series didn't follow a narrative sequence, but figured I should play this NES classic first if I was going to get the full enjoyment out of FFVII. I had only played a couple JRPGs at that time: Earthboun...

Re: The Room trilogy

I don't remember quite why I decided to give The Room a try, but it may have been because it was free (the second installment had just come out) on my Kindle Fire. I was a huge fan of text-based and point and click adventure games, Sierra and LucasArts and the like, but their casual spiritual succes...

Re: Mortal Kombat / II / 3 / UMK3 / Trilogy

Now, here we go! Most video games I don't play til several years after they come out, because I can never fit new console releases into my budget, but HERE is a franchise I was in with from the ground floor. Mortal Kombat showed up one day in the skating rink arcade where we used to go to every Frid...

I feel sad I missed my chance

The original Super Mario Kart was one of the few SNES classic games I didn't play around the time it came out. I was never into racing games, so it didn't appeal to me, even though I loved Mario. I wish I had played it at the time, because I feel that I've now missed my chance to really get into the...

I had a good time with this game as a youngster!

When I was a little skipper, I used to rent NES games on the weekends from the local video stores. One such spot was called Curtis Mathes, which I always thought was a mom-and-pop, but have recently learned was an electronics company chain that was in decline by the late 80s when I was there. The st...

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)

I decided to pick up the Ys series for the first time a few months ago after hearing a request or two from it on the Sound of Play and deciding the series sounded cool. I got the Ys Chronicles collection on iOS. This bundle included the remakes of the first two games in the series. They look lovely ...

Re: Our next podcast recording (22.1.17): Contra (Gryzor/Probotector) and Super Contra

Those of us of a certain age are old enough to have played the original Contra games shortly after they came out, but young enough where, to this day, the term "Iran-Contra" brings up images of this game rather than of Ronald Reagan and Oliver North. I spent so many hours on the Contra gam...

Re: Our next podcast recording (14.1.17) - The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

Before playing Spirit Tracks, I'd only ever played the 2D Zelda games, except for a few minutes of Ocarina; aside from the four classic Zeldas, I'd also completed the Seasons games, but that's it. I'm a bit of a retro gamer and tend to play games years after their release. I found a Nintendo DS at m...

Seconding the request for Loom theme!

I'd like to echo CODEMONKEY's request for the theme from the LucasArts adventure Loom. The soundtrack was essentially excerpts from the Tchaikovsky ballet "Swan Lake" (swans are an important motif and story element in the game), arranged in MIDI by The Fat Man, aka George Sanger, who I als...

Super Mario World Ending Theme!

One track I was surprised to see hasn't been on your show yet, perhaps because it's too obvious, is the end credits music for Super Mario World, composed by Koji Kondo. I believe the official name is just "Ending," although the smooth jazz arrangement on the official soundtrack album was e...

First-ever submission: Rebecca's Lullaby

I'd like to recommend "Rebecca's Lullaby," composed by Mark Morgan, from the 2015 indie game Stasis. It's a point-and-click adventure game with a space horror theme; the classic game it most evokes is Sanitarium, due to its dark tone, macabre visual design, and isometric perspective. If yo...
